D couldnāt get a good flight between finals and Christmas Eve, so will be flying to Beijing on Christmas day and arrive on the 26th. But the good news is that she will be going with her boyfriend to NYC to spend Christmas Eve with his family which sheās very happy about.
Popping in from the parents of 2016 thread to ask a question. For those with engineering students, if your DC had a summer internship or job with at least some relationship to engineering, what did it pay per hour? Was it at a small company or a large one? What region of the country? DS has an interview and has little idea what to ask for if asked to give a number.
Wonāthe be long now @insanedreamer, though I know the waiting through the last few days can seem like torture.
Donāt know @Cheeringsection. My daughter in engineering hasnāt been offered a paid internship as of yet. She is applying to a number of university research internships that all pay around 4500 to 5000 dollars plus campus housing, but I suspect that industry internships pay more. You might try posting under engineering majors or internship sections too.
@Cheeringsection my D in engineering didnāt do an internship last summer (worked on campus instead). Sheās applying for next summer (actually hopes to do a co-op in fall) but hasnāt yet. So Iām afraid I have no helpful info. If your son gets the internship, if you wouldnāt mind posting the results that would be helpful as I have the same question as you. Thanks!
My S is still waiting to hear back on his applications for next summer, but my D did computer science internships the last couple of summers where I work. She started around $18 per hour for an R&D classification in the Southwest. Although she had just finished her sophomore year, she had enough credit hours to be a senior when first hired. No housing included although, in our case, she lived at home. Our internship pay is based strictly on the classification of the job (support, technology, or R&D), the field of study, and on the number of credit hours accumulated.
@Cheeringsection - this might be helpful

You can add a region as well.
@Cheeringsection I have an aerospace internship with Textron Aviation next summer in the Midwest (Iām a sophomore in college) and was offered $18 per hour. I think it varies a lot by location and field. I have a friend whoās chemical engineering and she will be making mid to upper 20s per hour at one of her internships - probably because itās in the oil industry. Good luck to your S!
So everyone, Iām back from my 3rd semester. Itās been a long semester, but somehow I made it out with another 4.0! Iām making plans for living in Wichita next summer.
Way to go @albert69!
@Cheeringsection Your childās school probably keeps data like this at their career center. My daughterās school has salary statistics for previous years available online. I see a range from $18 to low $20ās per hour with a few outliers. My D has an internship lined up with a large company. They made an offer. There was no āaskingā on her part, it wasnāt part of the application process. I think for larger companies, itās very structured. They bring in a lot of engineering interns who are probably all offered the same rate. They are also providing housing. Some companies offer a housing stipend. I hope that helps.
D came home Monday night. Itās great to see her hanging out in the sofa. Also, our piano is getting a workout, which only happens when the kids are home. Itās nice to hear.
Thanks for the info! DS is interviewing with a smaller company that has never had an intern before and it is close to home rather than close to school. Therefore, not sure the career center data will be relevant. He is grateful to find a company that does what he is interested in (alternative energy) that is willing to consider a freshman. The ranges will at least get him in the right ballpark.
Great information regarding internships, thanks all.
We are also enjoying piano action. Beautiful noise!
If he is trying to figure out what to put on an application, he can write down a range. He wonāt price himself out of the market but wonāt under-value himself either. The range I provided is for jobs all over the country, though probably skewed towards the northeast. My daughter will be working in the Great Lakes region and her offer was at the upper end.
Merry Christmas HS15 parents. Hope you are all enjoying your studentās winter break visits.
Yes, Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas, and Happy Holidays in general to everyone. Hope most of you are enjoying having your DC15 home for winter break.
@insanedreamer, hope your daughter made it to China safe and sound and you are enjoying having her with you for a while.
@NorthernMom61 she just arrived last night - weāre overjoyed! She had safe travels and is happy. Sheās also getting to meet her newest baby brother for the first time.
Also, sheās grown taller!
@insanedreamer glad to hear that all is well. Happy New Year to you and your family.
