Parents of the HS Class of 2015

LadyArwyn, Her math and CR scores are amaazing combined. Writing is the easiest thing to bring up. If she preps over the summer I bet she can bring it up to 650 or higher easy.

LadyArwyn it looks like your D has a very nice upward trend ( learned that lingo on CC). A 3.85 is excellent!!

I agree – the writing section is the easiest one to improve. LadyArwyn, congratulations on the upward trend!

I googled the use of SAT II scores given the different percentiles associated with the same score across the different tests. The general consensus was that colleges still just look at the scores (and the tests are intentionally curved to reflect the level colleges are seeking in that subject so that, for instance, there is a much higher percentage of kids with 800 in Math2 than in Math 1). I do believe it would be just too confusing to compare kids across tests using each percentile. So it seems anything above 700 is a bar for the more selective colleges, with a second bar around 750 for the most selective, regardless of the associated percentiles. I would take these as estimates, not as hard data or quotes from any admins.

Agree with frustration about only weekdays in summer for visiting and/or interviews. My daughter had to totally change her summer lifeguard schedule and can not work with the camps this summer; she has to monitor the three larger pools. She loves teaching the young campers to swim and this year that is not an option. :frowning:

The only calls we have been receiving are from colleges themselves. Some schools we have absolutely no interest in and that becomes awkward. On the other hand my D has also had three nice conversations with Adcoms in schools we are interested in.

Because of my daughter’s activities (band, NJROTC, etc), she has been able to visit a number of universities in the area. Some were actual college tours, and others were for music festivals. She will be doing three in July with a college prep program, but I’m not sure which yet. So she has been able to be on campus during the school year, while classes are in session and students are doing their normal thing. Some have even included overnight stays. She just got back from one such overnight program today - at Pacific Lutheran University. She spent her elementary school years on the U Colorado campus, we lived in campus family housing while I was a student. In August we may visit the only two she hasn’t seen yet - Washington State and U Idaho.

SOG…Re: Appalachian State (and to feed my movie obsession)

:((

LadyA…You mentioned one of the possible paths for your D would be a cc then transferring to UW. Our S (D2’s twin brother) will be staying at home and starting at our local cc to get his gen ed requirements fulfilled, learn to study/work at a college level, and basically find what interests him for a future course of study. He’s very bright (3.87 GPA but no Honors or AP courses) with Asperger’s issues, but schoolwork just isn’t something he’s motivated towards excelling in. Our local cc has great articulation agreements with most of the IS universities, so if he does find something he’s passionate about pursuing he’ll have options to choose from. Given the unbelievable costs of college these days, we just can’t see spending big $$ until we’re sure he’s ready and has at least an initial vector towards a possible course of study. His GPA and ACT score would get him almost half-tuition at one of our nearby universities and he’ll have to leave that money on the table unfortunately, but we want to give him the best chance to succeed overall and we don’t feel that “throwing him into the fire” full-time at a 4-year uni is in his best interest.

I wonder, how many of those here has kids who decided to go the Running Start route instead of Honors/AP? My daughter chose to transfer to the community college the moment she qualified. She hates high school style education, and prefers college style teaching and learning. But no one seems to be able to tell he how this will actually affect her acceptance to the universities she prefers.

BHG officially may begin the application process to all her schools, as she officially exceeds the average ACT & SAT score of accepted students in the 75th percentile. Her gpa puts her in the 50th to 75th percentile depending on the school.

Next step in the plan–continue crafting the CA essay, and begin work on the supplemental essays. We have a published essay reader who happens to be one of BHG’s former English teachers (retired this year) that approached BHG and offered to assist in the application essay writing department. Well, actually, Mrs. PF has a intimate group of students that will meet at her home beginning the week after the July 4th Holiday to work on the blasted essays through completion.

Hello Parents of 2015,

I was wondering if any of you could give me some advice/tips

I am a Haitian-American female.

I just completed Junior year and moving on to senior year.

I have been taking honors since Freshmen year and AP classes/Dual enrollment since sophomore year, despite financial problems I have. My school is also brand new and in the beginning , not many AP classes are offered and there are more honors than AP. Also they have new policy where once you are in an AP class, you cannot drop out of it.Also, if you want AP to show on transcript, you have to take the AP exam. If you don’t take the exam, you won’t get the 5 extra points added onto your grade, the AP class will show up as either honors or regular on transcript. For AP tests, everyone who qualifies only get 1 free test and every other test costs 50$ …which is why I had no choice but to only enroll for 2 AP classes senior year.

Organizations at my school are so expensive…ranging from 30-40$+ each year and that’s not including any extra costs such as field trips or misc. And although there are some waivers, they are not that much helpful.

As a sophomore, I got on Dean’s list to do Dual-Enrollment in a course that is for Juniors/Seniors only.I am the first and last sophomore to be certified as a Pharmacy Assistant. I did this so if my Computer Engineering route does not go so well, I have a backup.

SAT: 1450 (560 CR, 450 M, 440 W)

Just took ACT and got a 23 Composite :frowning: (26 E, 19 M , 26 R, 21 S) .I noticed that some of the things covered on the ACT I never were taught. For example, I saw SOHCAHTOA but I felt ashamed that I only knew what the definitions of those were and nothing more…I was mostly taught on things that stuck to those “standards” GA has and rarely see covered on important tests.

:/

I have also been working on college essay prompts for the colleges I am applying too and I already have half of my application materials completed and undergoing final editing/proofreading… I am just so anxious and worried and so sad and happy at same time on being able to finally graduate from the hell I’ve been through…but I feel as though test scores are going to hold me back :frowning:

@sammyxB you may want to look at test optional schools. It looks like your school work is going fine and so are your EC.
I am happy that you are asking the parents on this forum they have a wealth of knowledge. It takes courage and maturity to do so, good for you.

The ACT is offered again in Sept. English and Math are the easiest sections to raise on this test but it takes knowledge so you may need to review concepts while reviewing the RED BOOK.

You might want to talk with your college counselor at your school to get feed back on how to approach the testing issues on your application.

I’m sure their are parents that can help on this board

Thank you @Hoosier96 for your kind words. They mean so much to me. I have tried looking at test optional schools.

I’m also applying to those ivy league/private universities I listed through a program called QuestBridge. I managed to get the College Prep Scholarship which puts me in good standing when I apply for National College Match this upcoming school year.

And haha yes I did a practice test sponsored by Kaplan and I had a 22 composite on it without no prep (20 on both english and math, 27 in reading,21 in science) after taking real test(and tried to study for it), I had roughly the same amount of scores but I am happy to say my English improved by 6 points! I hope to improve a lot more on the areas to at least be at a 26 composite. I have been trying to do the red book.

I have been talking to counselors but not much help I am getting. In addition, senior friends warned me and say some things I have to try by myself and not put trust in counselors because they have messed up many of their financial and waiver information one too many times along with sending the wrong materials to the wrong school and not sending materials in time of deadline. Many senior friends told me they had their parents come to the school so many times because of these errors.

I do want to improve on science but I do not know how…I do not care much about the science but since it affects my composite, I do want my score on it to increase. Math I have happy with a 26 at least on it lol. I know English and Reading could be in 30+ ,especially reading since I am a reader and love to read books

@Wolverine86, some friends of ours, Michigan fans, were at that game; their seats were in the middle of Appalachian State’s section. They got friendly w/ the people around them, were tersely corrected on the pronunciation of the school’s name - listening to them tell about sitting in that spot during that game was comical after the fact.

Shouldn’t @SammyxB be posting her “chance” questions in another forum? Think it will get lost here.

No it’s not really a chance. Haha. :stuck_out_tongue: Already posted chances. I just shared academic background to have some tips/advice from some people in this forum who, from what I read, are very experienced/knowledgeable and what to do.

Got my sons ACT score. His composite went up only by 1 point. I guess it’s better than not improving but it will be interesting to see if he wants to try again in the fall.

SammyxB you are a very mature young lady to come here and ask for our advice. I am going to tell you exactly what I would tell my own kids if they came to me with your test scores, GPA, and ECs. I do not know about Georgia State, but right now all of the other schools on your list are a reach for you, with several being a super high reach if not impossible. Schools such as MIT and Vanderbilt are reaches even for the most competitive applicants. My own daughter has some " lottery schools" on her list and I tell her all the time not to get her hopes up just in case. I would study for the ACT over the summer and retake in the fall. I also think it’s a good idea to apply to test optional schools - there is a huge list if you do a search. Find a few test optional schools that would be safeties and matches, while at the same time you can apply to one or two that may be a reach such as Middlebury. Your GPA is very good and your ECs and awards are impressive, but unfortunately your GPA/test scores are not quite high enough for most of the schools on your list. I encourage you to find a trusted teacher or adult that you can sit down with and create a realistic list based on your current information. After you retake the ACT you can determine if additional schools should be added. There are a lot of colleges out there who would love to have you!! Good luck.

Thank you @twogirls . I have found a huge list of test optional schools …however…many are too far…the schools I have chosen I have discussed with parent who think they are ok/ have family members in area that can be nearby…

I plan to apply to MIT and Vanderbilt through QuestBridge program if accepted through National College Match…

I still don’t get the reach/match concept thing on CC :stuck_out_tongue: I’m still trying to grasp that…

I just feel really discouraged sometimes at the fact of how the test scores may be what’s hurting me from getting into my schools…

I wish I did better in my courses and made my studying habits stronger… :frowning: -sigh-…

It sometimes is hard to believe that a college would want someone like me when it seems like I keep being outbested and now it feels like I put myself at a disadvantage/rut…

Ahsmuch congrats to your son for his one point increase. Now he can see how it compares to the schools on his list and decide if he wants to take it again. My D got her highest ACT during her first attempt- after that she went down a point. >:P .
