Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

@LKnomad We have 452

Current transcript says 575- doubt they will all walk.

I will add that those 420 students will graduate in a very nice ceremony lasting only 1 hour.

My S said parts of the BC test were hard and some were fine. He did well last year on the AB Calc test but I can’t remember if he thought it was hard right after taking it. I’m not too concerned with how he does on this one - I’m not sure I want him to place out of two levels of calculus in college anyway. I just wish the teacher would have been better. I think I’ve posted about this before but she ruined many kids 2nd quarter and mid term grades which impacted the midyear reports that went to colleges. In S’s case, it did not affect his admissions, but it definitely cost him at least one merit scholarship. And we sweated it out from the end of January until the end of March thinking it was going to affect admissions. It may have for other kids. Long story. We are in a good school district but it seems that things are not going in the best direction now in several areas. And to top it off, a teacher was just charged with having an inappropriate relationship with a student in S’s grade. Terribly icky. My S found out who the teacher was when he went to class and found out he was having a sub for the rest of the year. It kind of makes you wonder about the integrity of all the grades that teacher gave out this year. Of course, I feel badly for the student/victim.

That being said, S has had several good teachers over the years. My D seemed to luck out and had many more great teachers starting in elementary school. High school was more mixed. In S’s case, it just seems they have piled on work up through the very last day. Both of my parents were educators so I do have a healthy respect for what they do day to day. It just seems that in our high school more homework is equated with being a better, more rigorous teacher and I don’t agree that this is necessary. Okay, I need to post about something happier. Let’s see - tonight is S’s last night of doing high school homework! LOL

@Lknomad, ding ding ding, I think you might be the winner! D’s class has 40, supposedly, not sure how many will show tonight. Homeschoolers can be a little unpredictable when it comes to formal ceremonies

Thank you all for letting me know I am not alone in the world of the uninformed!

All my friends who took AP Calc said it was long and rough. Senior awards night was long but good except they were brutal at announcing the names. So many simple mistakes. One of the AP’s didn’t say my first or last name right- not even a mispronunciation-an entirely different name!!! I got a certificate and a medal for a 90+ average and 2 local scholarships as did my sister

So, @readingclaygirl - is your AP’s name John Travolta?
Seriously- sorry he couldn’t get it right! Glad you & your sister were recognized for your achievements!

@bookmom7 No. Is that some sort of joke? Yeah it was bad and they gave the French award to the Spanish person and the Spanish award to the French person.

Hmm. I think I’m going to take a moment to be deeply, darkly bitter about the jaw-droppingly high number of poor and even damaging teachers my special-needs child had from 3rd grade on. The best delivered a simply average education. The worst…well, there are no words and I hope they burn in hell. If I could have home-schooled, I would have.

Ok. Got that out of my system. Be thankful if the experience and sentiment are foreign to you and yours.

The upshot of the miseducation of D16 is that she came to know, in her deep heart’s core, that she must teach herself. That lesson will assist her as she moves forward.

@dyiu13 I’m sure your D will be an excellent teacher

I think the first time I looked at CC was last year after the Calc A/B test. S came home, said it was the worst test ever and he was sure he’d done utterly horribly and hadn’t even recognized a couple of the questions at all. I visited my favorite therapist and parenting coach, ā€œDr. Googleā€, and found a CC thread where students were all complaining about a couple of the questions. And - S got a 5 on it. His A/B teacher wasn’t the best ever, but evidently prepared them well enough.

His B/C teacher is an alum of the school, and not from all that far back. I can’t sing her praises enough. She told them a LOT more about what to expect, and also the rough statistical ranges that would correspond to different scores. Evidently, getting ~70%ish correct gets you a 5. They took a previous year’s test as a final, and S did well, so he was relaxed today. ā€œYeah, it was fun. Way better than last year.ā€

He’s at his night class now and is definitely hitting the final stretch of the semester. Today’s test will determine what his required math class will be at Pomona, so it matters a bit. His other two APs, not at all, so he’s done with prep for them, too.

@readingclaygirl I think so too, as school social workers do a lot of social/emotional teaching/consulting. However, in my darker moments I do wonder if this might be a type of Stockholm Syndrome she’s manifesting.

@readingclaygirl Several years ago John Travolta slaughtered Idina Menzel’s name on the Academy Awards( I think) so yes, it is a joke

^^^^ exactly ^^^^

@readingclaygirl - I was thinking about the Oscars (?) when John Travolta completely botched (Frozen) Idina Menzel’s name.

At my son’s school, students take AP Calc AB or BC in one year , AB is not a prerequisite for BC. It’s interesting how things are handled so differently at different schools. My son had decided before even taking the test that he would not be using Calc for college credit. He plans to take it in college.

Okay thanks guys. @bookmom7 @carolinamom2boys

626 in D’s graduating class so yes @LKnomad you still win!

How big is your school @LKnomad ?? Wow, that’s a huge class!

Good luck to those with kids still taking AP tests and fingers crossed for awesome grades for those who have some in the bag already. It sounds so brutal.

@dyiu13 my D’s experiences with some clueless teachers has only fueled her drive to be a great teacher to those who come after her. Sometimes it’s less about the way they teach than the way they interact with students, regardless of topic or ability. As of now, she plans on majoring in special ed. Who knows, maybe she and your D will cross paths one day.

I read about your S’s Calc teacher @PAO2008 and thought you were talking about ours. She does prepare them for the tests but we are very glad to be almost done with her. My kids each had her for two years so we’ve had to suffer her condescension and bullying attitude for four years. I decided I could not be in the same room with her this year, whether at back-to-school night or teacher conferences. S14 dropped her BC class after first semester (he was failing; he got a 5 on AB the previous year). I hope S16 does well on BC but he already has credit for AB so it isn’t critical. He said it was okay but one of the FRQs was on a subject his teacher told them in advance she wouldn’t cover (too complicated for too little payoff) and he discovered after time was called that he’d overlooked two multiple choice questions (thought he’d finished but there was another page).
