Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

Congrats @bookmom7 !

Congrats to your D @labegg !

Somebody mentioned passport card somewhere upstream on this thread. DD got her driving permit, but I don’t know if she will have time to get her license before she leaves for college since she just turned 17 and our state law requires driving education with instructor before she can start driving. So my question is: should she get passport card (she will apply for passport since her old one expired) or get regular ID at DMV? The main purpose is to have ID card to be able to fly alone.

Can she get state ID? Does your state require birth cert for ID and drivers license? And will passport card come with a paper passport too?

@texaspg Believe me I’ve started planning . The challenge for me is to support , but not push and stress because DS19 doesn’t respond well to that. Our game plan has started though.

@dyiu13 State ID and passport card will cost the same $30. I don’t know which one is better.

Does the state of require the birth certificate to obtain the ID or drivers license? I ask because of flight security rules now require birth-cert-backed form of ID. The passport provides that, but our state does not for state ID or drivers license.

@dyiu13 just watched the documentary ā€œThe Hunting Groundā€ last night. Chilling.

@Ballerina016 Since passport card is federal, I’d think that would be preferable.

@dyiu13 how could it not require birth certificate for a state drivers license? How would someone prove their age?

Our state and a few others don’t. Just proof of residence or some-such. That’s why they are not acceptable for flying.

Or drinking?

So D just put a new idea in my idea in my head. My plan all along was to come with her to move in and go to orientation but not Family Weekend in late October because of the flight costs and time away from work. She thinks Family Weekend would be more fun, and I like the idea of seeing her midway through the semester, meeting her friends and checking out her academics once she has settled into school life.

If you had to choose, which would you pick?

Oh, and @Undercovermom1 & @dyiu13 ā€œThe Hunting Groundā€ has been on our need to watch list for awhile. Thanks for the reminder to do so before she leaves.

Family weekend can be fun but it’s also usually very crowded everywhere you go. We went one year, then chose other weekends to visit in other years. Move-in can be stressful, so I don’t know- in this case I might choose family weekend.

@palm715 I would probably do an off-weekend. Not move-in, not Family Weekend. That’s just me, though! I seem to recall that on older D’s Parent’s Weekend (which we did not attend), her roommate’s dad flew in and took both of them out to eat. When we visited on an off-weekend, we did the same. Took both girls out to eat.

For move-in? She just wanted us to drop her off, help her get her stuff up to her room, and leave. We went out to lunch without her and hung out in town for a bit. Sent one last text. We’re leaving! You good? Need anything?

Since we had been down to a big Admitted Student Event and Registration in the spring, there was no need to hang around for any parent info sessions in August.

Also, some states have serious penalties for getting caught with a fraudulent ID card, something that seems ubiquitous and harmless to many college students. Might want to bring that up with your students!

I was worried that Parent Weekend would be very crowded and hotels all booked so we went another weekend.

WA is one of those states where you don’t need a birth certificate to get a driver’s license. However, you can get an ā€œenhanced licenseā€ which requires a birth certificate and a series of answered questions that for now, at least, is still good for flying. You can also get an enhanced ID if you don’t drive. They are also good to go north to Canada. it all goes back to the Patriot Act, I think.

We’re going to move-in, as parents are involved in several activities the first 2 days for freshmen. We don’t plan on visiting for parent’s weekend. They are a new thing, yes? I don’t remember them when I was in college.

When I was at U of I in 80-81 we had parent’s weekend. Took my parents to a football game- some student behind us threw up right next to my dad… maybe sitting in the student section wasn’t the best idea! @-)

Progress is being made on the disability services front! I got an email from the director of disability services stating she is in the process of ordering my FM system!

Good for you, @readingclaygirl.

Still, it was an ummm, memorable memory @bookmom7!

Congrats, @ProbDeferred! Thanks for checking in.

Good luck to @aMomWithHope. Tossing you a couple of life preservers for the interim.

I agree with @texaspg that it is good to plan and also think @carolinamom2boys is one of the best planners on our thread.

@4kids2graduate, unfortunately, there IS a way to game your system. Here’s a story similar to @psychmomma’s: in S13’s class, we had a student take one semester of an AP class (he did not plan to take the exam) solely for the purpose he could be sure that he had a higher GPA than another student in the class whose GPA and APs he’d been monitoring.

Tough choice. @palm715. How about asking for an extra ticket as a combo Mother’s Day, birthday, and holiday gift?
Otherwise, I say go with what your PalmKid recommends.

Thanks for the compliment @EastGrad

@EastGrad I agree @carolinamom2boys is definitely one of the best planners on this thread.

I bet she’s already thinking of where to get the white dinner jacket her dashing young S16 will be wearing for the graduation ceremony at the College of Charleston.
