Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

No Mom would have put Mom’s Day in the middle of Grad Season. I am postponing “my day” into June.

Hope everyone has a Wonderful Mother’s Day!

Happy Mother’s Day!

Happy Mother’s Day to all of the wonderful CC moms! Hope your kids treat you well today

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there.

This is such an appropriate time for this special day. Our kids would not be in the enviable position they are in now (i.e. getting ready to graduate and go to college) if it weren’t for the dedication of all of you moms.

I think my work is difficult and has its share of sacrifices, but it’s certainly nothing compared to what moms go through to ensure our kids grow up right.

Thanks @ChicagoSportsFn

Agreed, @Cheeringsection! Whoever came up with the day also didn’t consider AP tests and finals. D has finals for her community college classes in Calculus II, Physics, and Computer Programming this week. I’m using the power vested in me by being the Mom in Mother’s Day to postpone my special day until next week.

On my subject of mom fashion, I swear by the original dark wash Old Navy Rockstar jeans. They are like wearing PJs without anyone realizing it.

Thanks for the input on Orientation vs Parents Weekend. You guys are the best.

Hi @sseamom and all! I do apologize for being so inactive. I’ve been busy with catching up on make-up work from when I was gone visiting colleges, as well as studying for APs (I am taking 7, although I wouldn’t have if I knew Yale’s AP Policy), and generally enjoying life with friends. I still have to contact Yale about specific details about when I can move in, since I will be going on FOOT, which is a pre-orientation trip that takes us hiking. I’ll be hiking the Green Mountains in Vermont with some of my friends. As for summer plans, I’m going on a Europe trip with some teachers and classmates. After that, my friends invited me to stay in Korea and Japan with them, so I’m really grateful that I’ll get a chance to see those countries without having to pay too much. In the last few weeks before the Pre-O trip and school, I’ll be working at a tutoring company.

And happy Mothers’ Day!!!

Happy Mother’s Day everyone!

@palm715 I agree about those jeans! They look like regular jeans but are super soft and comfortable.

I know you’re all talking tongue-in-cheek about the person who picked Mother’s Day being on the 2nd week of May, but the woman who chose it was actually honoring her own mother’s date of death, long before AP tests and high school grad season were “things”. She petitioned for years to get it made into a national holiday, and I think she lived to see it happen. I wrote a blurb about it in a newsletter I do-that’s how I know this trivia.

Ooops-wasn’t her birthday, it was when she died. I fixed it.

Aargh. My kid is driving me nuts. She refuses to register for classes–“too busy”. She is working on HS homework that ISN’T GOING TO MATTER constantly. Seriously, 4-6+ hours every night and more on weekends.
She seriously CANNOT see the forest for the trees.

Happy Mother’s Day!

@Booajo surely she can set some time aside to register if she must do it now. Does she not know she is limiting her own choices by delaying?

D has only had to put in preferences for her first year seminar. Class Registration doesn’t take place until next month.

@Booajo, is she having second thoughts about going away? D had no trouble registering for classes, but has had periods of being really quiet and moody lately. I asked about it and she says that she’s confident about leaving and the academic challenges ahead, but is worried that she isn’t emotionally ready. She says she will “work it out” but I’m going to keep that conversation going.

@frenchtoastlover -wow! You’re really fortunate to get to do all that travelling. Sorry about the AP’s but education is never wasted. I grew up in NH and the Green Mountains of Vermont are wonderful. Our family did a lot of camping up there.

You’re smart to urge your DCs to register ASAP so they don’t get shut out of needed courses or have seats open only in 8 a.m., 7:30 p.m, or Friday 1:30 p.m. courses. They might not like them apples. Registering usually takes 30 minutes at max. An English composition, a fresman seminar, a course in or prep for major, etc. Whatever’s recommemded.

Ah, as I expected, my S is second guessing his choice. I think a certain girl attending the “other” school is causing the hesitation. Do kids change after deciding- like this, a week or two after the deadline? I’d think all the scholarships he lost out on (by declining the school) would have been given away by now. Sheesh.

@psychmomma My guess is that yes scholarship offers are probably off the table at this point. Is that somewhere he can attend without scholarships? Is this a long term girlfriend that he’s willing to base a significant decision like what college to attend on?

D is not regretting her choice at all. She is super excited about going. In fact she did the online registration as soon as she could and has all her classes and a schedule she loves. She was not closed out of anything she wanted to take. Monday’s and Wednesday’s will be very full, Tuesday and Thursday are light, and then she has only one hour of class on Friday and that is at 10:00. She has nothing before 9:30 on any day. It’s really a very nice schedule.

Great schedule @me29034 . DS16 has to wait until orientation to register for classes. After he’s done all of his AP classes, he’s going to take his math placement exam. Does anyone else’s child have to take those ?

@carolinamom2boys - yes & DS is not too happy about it. He also has to purchase a Math Readiness Package- $50 & pass with a 70 or higher - then take a test at orientation.
All for Calc I which he had Freshman/Sophmore year.

D will not be taking the math placement test. She is only required to take one math class for general ed requirements and is able to satisfy that with a stats course that doesn’t require the placement test. After that she will never have to take math again. Math is really not her thing.

No math placement test here-all education majors take the same math-Math For Teaching and Learning 1 & 2. Glad it’s not calculus or anything like that, math is not my thing
