Parents of the HS Class of 2017 - 3.0 to 3.4 GPA

I don’t post much, but enjoy following as things unfold here. Just a couple of notes: First @eandesmom , I work at a university and I would encourage your child who received the hand-written note to send a quick email to the writer thanking him for the note and reiterating his excitement about applying to the X program - it may get back to the Admissions Office (and, no, alumni don’t get paid to do this). I say this because many schools count what some call “touches,” which include things like requesting info, stopping by a booth at a college fair, going for a visit, meeting with an alumnus if you’re not local to the school, etc. More “touches” are good as they show interest; if a kid is on the bubble, having indicated a high degree of interest can help. On the other hand, don’t stress about it. It’s still a small thing. Second, congrats to all who have gotten good EA news. We had a disappointment a couple weeks ago, but great news yesterday, with two admits (Loyola U - Chicago and U Tampa) rolling in with half-tuition merit scholarships. The latter was not a big surprise, but the former was, as D’s stats are around the median. @93pilots, congrats on the Trinity admit. Would you mind sharing your child’s stats? My kid applied there too in EA2, but it looked to us like a reach.

@eandesmom, my D got the same thing from what I would think is the same school. We did visit back in the spring, and D liked it quite a bit but it’s no longer a top contender for her. I will suggest that she respond, but I can’t see it being something she will do happily, and I’m kind of in “pick your battles” mode and this isn’t something I’m willing to go to the mat on.

I’d like to echo the thanks for maintaining the outcomes list, especially when you’re so busy right now! Your tasks right now do sound login (if exhausting) , and seem well suited to your personality. :">

Welcome to @MSU88CHEng!

Thanks to all who responded to my NHS/scholarship issue–I have passed along the hive wisdom to my Didnt get an eye roll, which I consider a victory (or maybe she’s just getting better at hiding that sort of thing).

Congrats to all with new acceptances and/or $$! Makes my heart happy to see our kids do so well!

@kt1969, @RightCoaster @klinska @suburbancat @RightCoaster @93pilots thanks for all the feedback. I had actually already commented that he should really send a little email and it was met with an eye roll. This is the one school where he has not interviewed and there really hasn’t been the opportunity to have much in the way of touches. I’d suggested he reach out for the AO prior to applying but there really wasn’t a great forum to do so (no offer of phone or skype or alumn interviews etc) and he did connect with them at one college fair (though not “his” AO) so we’ve left it at that. I had a hard enough time getting him to do it after live interviews with AO’s he actually really connected with. He will do it if I push. @klinska I didn’t know that school was on your list too. I do think it is on @CoyoteMom 's list so we may all be talking about the same note there. However if all 3 kids got the same/similar note that would indicate less of a “bubble” approach and more of a mass mail one (in my mind anyway).

@suburbancat I do know it could be considered a touch (and that of course the alum isn’t paid lol) convincing S of that is another story. He is still mildly cranky that we spent 4 hours last week to do a student interview at another school. We both had assumed it would be an AO.

Congrats on Loyola U Chicago and U Tampa! And as (or more!) importantly, the half tuition scholarships!

@MSU88CHEng welcome! We have a few “higher than” folks who are active here, all are welcome! We are pretty cool and laid back if I do say so myself. Congrats on MSU, legacy I take it (based on your user name lol). Ugh on the name issue, glad yours was relatively easy to fix. Your post reminded me that S17 had/has 2 college board accounts, luckily the “first” one only showed up for his 10th grade PSAT and he created a new one starting in 11th and all have synced since then.

@oldbrookie thanks!!! That is so sweet.

@eandesmom – Thanks for the welcome, and yes, S is legacy at MSU. Although we haven’t been notified of scholarships, that should up his total there by $3000, and every little bit helps for OOS… He has no interest in STEM, though, even with 2 engineers for parents.

S didn’t do any interviews, although at our MSU visit last spring, he had an add on meeting with an advisor for James Madison College. Even after that, it was like pulling teeth to get him to email her after the visit to thank her for her time and show interest in the program–Uggh!

@suburbancat - sure. 3.3 weighted, maybe a point less than that unweighted, as of the end of junior year. Strong upward trend after sophomore year. 32 ACT. We had Trinity pegged as a “possible/target” but definitely weren’t sure how it would go. Good luck to your kid. Our Naviance made it look like there were better odds for early applicants, so EA2 is a good idea.

Ha, just got an email from St Edward’s [to me] saying congrats on Emma’s admission to St Edward’s [which you haven’t informed her of yet] and we’d like to pay for her to come out here and check out the school. What the heck?? The bummer is that I had already booked a trip out to TX for Emma to visit my MIL and see the school over MLK weekend [extending by a day], and they don’t reimburse for frequent flyer tickets. Dang.

@stlarenas Congratulations! Did your letter list the scholarships? My D’s letter had them listed out, $2908 Midwest Student Exchange + $2500 TruMerit Scholarship. We are hoping it goes up after her next ACT and she will likely increase her GPA after this semester. Currently 3.4 UW GPA + 31 ACT. But not sure she has the EC to get the Presidential Scholarship. We are OOS. But would love to know what was listed for the scholarship increase in your letter if you don’t mind sharing?

@kt1969, dang is right! Would have been nice to have St. Edward’s cover that cost! Are you going to tell your D or are you going to wait for the school to tell her she’s in?? Is this a real contended for her? Where in TX is it?

@klinska, I did tell her. And she was all, “whoo hoo! I totally want to go there!” and [this is via text] I said “you know next to nothing about this school except where it is located, which isn’t enough of a reason to go there. It’s catholic and you can’t have a guy in your room overnight”. Her reply is unprintable, followed by “nevamind”. Not that she is at the point of having a guy stay in her room or anything, but I think she’d at least like the possibility. It is in Austin, which is why she likes it…Austin is a fun city and it’s within an hour of my MIL, who D17 adores. But seriously. It isn’t reviewed in any of the books we have so don’t know much about it except what’s on the website.

@kt1969 Back in the dark ages DH and I went to a Catholic college also. Guys weren’t allowed in female dorms past certain hours but it definitely happened. Don’t know if times have changed and it wasn’t St. Edwards but it all depends on the RA enforcing things and roommates.

@Mom2017grad For Truman State? Yes. The merit listed as: A+ Recognition (I think this a Missouri HS thing) $500, TruMerit Scholarship $3000, and added on the second letter Presidents Honorary $3000, Presidents Leadership $1500

We didn’t send any updated scores or anything, however she did send in her resume to be considered for Competitive Scholarship Review when she saw it was an option in the portal.

Good morning all!

If it works for everyone I think my go forward plan will be to try and do an outcome update once a week, maybe on the weekends? I’ve updated it for everything posted here that folks wanted included (I think, if I missed anyone please let me know) and PM’s to date. Sending good vibes for the week for anyone waiting on ED’s that come out this week or folks getting PSAT scores today. I’ll have to wait till tonight for S19’s scores, he hasn’t shared the log in with me yet lol.

@MSU88CHEng yes, I gathered the ChemE lol. None of our kids are following in our paths either, which is ok as long as they are happy! MSU is a great school and yes, every little bit of $$ helps!

@kt1969 how funny. I would be equally annoyed. Cracking up at the room comment (boys overnight). Kids are funny about the room thing. S was saying the other day how he wasn’t as crazy about one school that required you to live on campus for 3 years. And I was like um…most of yours requires all 4. Huh, he said. So we went through who required what (since his brain is a colander and he’d forgotten) and he was like, ok, that’s fine. And moved on.

** kids are following in our paths ** @eandesmom @MSU88CHEng I noticed this comment.

I’m being very amused because my son is following in my & my husbands path. (He’s decided to be a CS major & both my husband and I work in the field.) Although except for pushing him in STEM and encouraging him to take AP CS since I knew he’s probably like it. I’ve honestly tried to stay open to what ever he wanted. Down to the fact that one of his top choices is the school I attended. (And I honestly think its a great fit for him.) But it is for some of the same reasons. I don’t tell him because it would totally make him run away screaming. But I see so much of me in him right now, it’s eery… So even while he is pulling away from us like crazy right now (and it does hurt a bit), he shares so much in common I expect this to only be a few angsty teenage years.

P.S. My older D while she looks a lot like me… has a very different personality.

I would love to go to UVM but they don’t have my major  the closest to journalism/ communications they have is english/ creative writing

@curiositycat333 CS must be in the genes. My husband and I both work/worked in CS and son2 is heading that direction. He did discovered programming on his own and fell in love. Son1 loved computers also but loves engineering more. It was a toss up for a bit but he ultimately decided MechE was for him.

@curiositycat333 That’s awesome that your son is following in your paths! The funny thing about my guy is that his STEM scores are better that his reading, writing, etc., but he currently has a hate/hate relationship with calculus. And he’s said he wants to be a lawyer since he was in 7th grade. He loves his IB History, Theory of Knowledge, and even his IB English classes this year. So, he’s headed in the right direction for him. And although it will be more expensive than the SUNY schools, I’m secretly thrilled he’s excited about MSU. Also, because he’s doing James Madison, I already know the he’ll be housed in the dorm if lived in–back in the day, I was an engineering geek surrounded by poly-sci types…

3.0 is a solid B.

@MSU88CHEng I keep saying that I’d support my kids whatever they did. But honestly if my S told me he wanted to be a lawyer or a journalist. We would certainly have a discussion about where his strengths lie, and how he would really need to overcome his weaknesses. Just like me thinking on his feet & writing quickly aren’t his strenghts.
