Parents of the HS Class of 2017 - 3.0 to 3.4 GPA

Thanks @mamaedefamilia!

@kt1969 that’s interesting about same aid for our kids - I did hear they are generous with aid - don’t know what their criteria are. We can’t get any need-based aid so it’s all we’ve got! I can see your being apprehensive about your D going to school far from home. We live in CA and my D doesn’t want to go far from home so she didn’t apply to schools on the east coast!

@CAtransplant - As a Californian, do you have any opinions or insights on Loyola Marymount, Chapman, Cal Lutheran, or U of the Pacific? All of those seem like good options for high-B students.

@CAtransplant and @kt1969, my older daughter went to the University of Redlands and loved it. She graduated in 2013. If you have any questions about the school, feel free to ask here or send me a message.

And @snoozn, I spent the first year of married life in Germany. Your post is bringing up fond memories.

That’s right @rosered55 I remember you saying that now. Good to know now that we have an acceptance. I may have some questions eventually too but want to wait and see how everything plays out first

@suburbancat I hear a lot more about LMU and Chapman than the other two you mentioned. In fact, not sure I’ve even heard of Cal Lutheran but from the name, I’m guessing there is some religious background to it? My D is Jewish by birth on my side and considers herself culturally Jewish but as for religion, an atheist. So she is not very interested in schools that have a strong religious component or requirements. We looked at LMU but something about it led her to feel it was more religious than she was comfortable with so she did not apply. She did apply to Chapman - she toured and and really really liked it - thought the campus was really pretty and it felt very friendly. I think U of Pacific also had too much of a religious feel to her and she didn’t apply. Another school to consider is U of San Diego - we haven’t toured yet but she applied. She has a friend who is 2 years ahead of her who goes there and loves it and even though it has a Catholic background, he’s told her it is not so religious-feeling that she would feel uncomfortable there. We have friends who live in San Diego who also told us they know a lot of kids who’ve gone there and they feel it’s a very good school. It’s a beautiful campus too. My D really loves San Diego as well (as do I!)

UOP has not been officially religious since 1960s and does not require theology. I can’t speak for the undergrad feel, but I attended graduate school at the main Stockton campus and there was no religion to speak of. It is a very pretty IV covered campus, now the city of Stockton is not that fabulous…

I think the U San Diego is more religious than your friend thinks. It may not bother him, everyone is welcome, but there is a religious atmosphere there, including a gorgeous cathedral at the highest point on campus. Can’t miss it.

@theally1 oh shoot, @suburbancat I was confusing U of Pacific with another school. I was thinking of Seattle Pacific in Seattle I think. Stockton would be too close to home for my D to consider @suburbancat.

That’s good to know @twoinanddone about U San Diego - if she does get in and is seriously considering it, we will have to investigate that further. I think her friend said there are about two theology type classes required but can be anything such as history of religion, etc., not a specific religion. I don’t think the cathedral would bother her - it is more will she feel uncomfortable as an atheist and how much religious activity would she be expected to partake in? In general I think she’d prefer a non-sectarian school or a public school but we shall see how it all plays out.

@CAtransplant I hear you…we r also cultursl Jews. Most of west coast Freshman Admit Nursing Schools are private religious. D17 loved the green campus of University of Portland best, but that school has a bit more required theology than University of SF, which is city. The latter is also a bit too close to home. Also admitted to publics out of state. All more or less within same $ range with merit. So, she is now on the fence…

@theally oh that’s interesting, so if she wants that freshman admit program and west coast she needs to go with private religious in most cases, huh? Or a public out of state. What is she leaning towards most right now, U of Portland? You must live somewhere in my neck of the woods if USF is a bit close to home!

@CAtransplant We r in the East Bay. With 3.8 GPA, Nursing in the 4 CA publics are a reach.

I almost have the ginormous doc updated for outcomes postings. I will have today. I will not be surprised if it makes me put it into 3 posts! Our kids have been busy!

Jumping in here. regarding some of the schools. We have close friends (family, and of our kids) that are at Redlands, Chapman, Santa Clara. All are very happy. One of S17’s closest friends and one of SD14’s as well. S17’s friend Chapman may transfer back here to an instate school next year, he is struggling with the financial package. I don’t know what his offer was and would have assumed his family would qualify for some need based aid but the numbers he has mentioned to S17 make me very concerned with what he seems to be taking on, on his own. I really don’t know though. He does love the school and darling friend of S17’s who I saw on xmas day gushed on and on about her first year so far at Redlands. Another close friend of S17 applied and was accepted at Chapman…he is jewish and has toured, didn’t seem to bother him a bit. But his mom did say the merit offer was low. Chapman is actually affiliated with out church, apparently there is a scholarship that our family friend could have applied for though our church but he had no idea there was a link. So, knowing him, and the other kids there my sense is it’s pretty minor religious feel if at all. He has certainly never mentioned it.

Cal Lutheran is a funny one. They sent both SD14 and S17 free apps. She actually applied b/c it was free but knew nothing about it. I know one student who went there from S17’s HS. For whatever reason it didn’t work out…but I’m not sure it was Cal Lutheran at all and was likely more that college didn’t work out. He moved back home. Is doing well and on his own now but the 4 year plan wasn’t right for him at the time. So…not a good data point at all!

U of San Diego is Catholic, versus Jesuit and I would expect much more of a religious vibe there.

My cousins daughter is a sophomore in the direct admit nursing program at U of Portland. She looked at USF, Seattle U and I can’t recall where else but yes…she found for nursing direct admitthe privates where her best options. Very very happy there. Another close friend’s D is a freshman. Neither find the school terribly religious. Yes it is there but not at all in your face and it doesn’t bother them. TO be fair, one was raised Catholic but for the other, if they do go to church it’s just Christmas and Easter. LOL! Same thing with kids we know (many many) at Seattle U (dad used to teach there, H got his MBA, etc). But, if you really don’t want that at your school it may not work. For some kids the presence of a cathedral and even a ethics class might be too much. I personally think they are quite mild.

As for Seattle Pacific (SPU), our oldest graduated from there, my sister got her masters there. For undergrad I find/found it to be a bit more religious than the jesuits. It was very service oriented and definitely some religious classes required though it wasn’t horrible and not in your face at all. SS11 is not remotely religious at all and it didn’t seem to bother him an iota.

@CoyoteMom how did you get around without the rental car? that would be a major hiccup for many school visits. I’m starting to plan our college visits and despise driving especially in winter but am going to have to.

@klinska hopefully something will show up in the next week regarding merit. Given that the NPC showed something that you’ve not yet seen I would absolutely be calling them about it. To me, that NPC is the reason a school is on or off our list and if it’s off (and the school was important enough) I would definitely call and do think that is a legit reason to to opt out of ED as that is a false promise, especially if the financials are pretty straight forward. The horrid part is that of course you don’t want to opt out so I really reallly hope they will come through with something and am super sorry that you might have to have that conversation at all with them.

@snoozn ahhhhhh Rothenberg. LOVE love love Rothenberg. It is not far from my SIL’s house. Technically my brothers as well but he is stateside at the moment as he used up his visa time and has to be back in the states for 2 years before he can work in Europe again. One of his stepkids can’t leave the EU so she stays with the kids there and my brother goes back and forth as much as possible. He has about a year left ( retired and currently employed). He has an amazing job stateside but it’s hard on them. My kids are dying to go visit their cousins but UGH the cost. We’ve not yet managed it, only I have been but maybe when S19 graduates HS.

Thanks @eandesmom very interesting. I didn’t even mention religious feel at Chapman because my daughter felt it was non-existent. I don’t think they have any requirement of education in that area either.

Thanks @eandesmom for the feedback re U of Portland. It is the only Catholic that D17 is in that is not Jesuit. It is Holy Cross (they are associated with Notre Dame) and are considered a bit more intense. Yet, being in Portland we saw quite a few funky kids around, so I think should be comfortable with diversity. Daughter just got this happy -place vibe there that she keeps on remembering. Ultimately she plans to go to admit student days/weekends at all these and will make a decision subsequently. Best to all and Happy Holidays!

The girls I know at U of P are very liberal open kids. They both absolutely love it there.
