Parents of the HS Class of 2017 - 3.0 to 3.4 GPA

S17 got an onsite acceptance to LIU-Post but still has to have a portfolio review (theater tech).

He attended a performing arts open house at Adelphi and was impressed with the program. He had brought along his materials to try and get advice on how to turn it into a portfolio and ended up having an interview with two faculty members. They told him he’d be getting something in the mail soon. One nice thing about this school is that scholarships are stackable.

He still has to finish his app to Purchase. His community college app is in.

Other than that, we are done. He wants a gap year. I wanted him in somewhere and to defer.

Congrats to everyone on the acceptances coming in. It does take a weight off.

On a happy note - S17 actually made the Honor Roll this quarter for the second time in his career. He also acknowledged that he could work a little harder and maybe get his B+ in APUSGov and the B in APES up by half a grade each.

@techmom99 Great news on the LIU Post acceptance. From what I know that’s close to where you live correct? Is LIU Post affordable? I remember that was one of the reasons we crossed it off DD’s list.

My news is S17 did confirm that the UofO application is now showing complete. No idea if they will still consider his app for EA. I guess we will find out in a few weeks.

@curiositycat333 -

Thank you. We won’t know if it’s affordable until we get the package. He could commute from here - the public bus actually goes directly on to campus but we’d probably let him drive.

Can you contact the AO and ask if they will consider your son’s app as EA?

@techmom99 How far away do you live? (rhetorical question. Don’t answer it here. PM me if you want.) When we visited Whittier they had a fairly strict campus housing rule, that could only be overridden if your parents lived in fairly close proximity or were an older/married student. We were well out of that range. A neighbor attended (and it worked well for her) but she lived on campus all 4 years. When I visited 5 years ago, so I don’t know if their rules have changed.

I’m not going to call the AO, that would be my son’s job. There is no way I’m going to get him to do that. And it truly was his mistake, and he refused to look into it earlier. It’s not the end of the world, I was just hopping to hear to help ease the anxiety (and mine) of waiting for apps. If we hear from them this month, then it’s OK. If we don’t… we will assume it’s been bumped to regular decision.

I also refused to call the admissions office for any of my children. I did call financial aid several times. That’s a little too complicated for them to handle, but if they can’t deal with admissions I’d be worried.

@techmom99 that is wonderful news, congratulations! I like your plan of allowing a gap year but having it be based on a deferral. I think that is such a better way to go then gapping without having that lined up.

Question for all

I would like to start some kind of acceptance document and/or thread that is specific to this group and wanted everyones input on what you might find most helpful.

I know for me, seeing a snapshot of the schools this stat range applied to and got into (or didn’t) and what kind of merit was awarded would have been super helpful for previous classes (versus going through and reading every page). It could be a nice way for us to share and celebrate but also benefit those that follow whose kids are in this range (which includes my S19 lol). While there is a larger acceptance thread on the forum, it’s pretty impossible to translate that down to this group in any meaningful way.

Several ways we could do this if folks are interested.

  1. Mimic the way it is done on the main thread (by poster and by school). I'd kind of like to include stats for each though but we maybe could come up with something that "buckets" the stats if folks don't want that level of detail shared. I personally think only looking at the UW GPA doesn't really tell you enough about a kid so test scores and EC's are helpful to capture somehow.

We could either have folks do a copy paste for each update or I could maintain a master list and update as things come in.

  1. Same kind of thing but house a doc elsewhere and I can PM folks with the link. That would allow more of a spreadsheet format versus text based and anyone with the link could update.

What do you guys think? Just an idea and totally open to others or if folks do not want, we can scrap the idea.

@curiositycat333 -

Suffice it to say that we live close enough that he could commute by public transportation, but we are hopeful that he would be able to live on campus. A theater major probably requires a lot of late nights and weekends, so I would prefer him to be on campus.

@eandesmom -

My hope is that he will opt out of the gap year, but if he doesn’t, at least he may now have a place after it’s over.

I think an accepted list would be good.for our group.

Hey everyone - Congrats to all on acceptances so far! I’m also coming out of lurkdom…not sure if it’s worth it to start my own thread, cause my S17 didn’t hit the magic 32 to go along with his A- average (which would put him under the range for a different thread)…and besides - everyone here is so supportive, and I can admit to obsessively checking portals ;-).
My son is quirky. We’ve been focused on LACs, including some CTCLs.
He’s been accepted to Juniata - yay! He applied EA to George Mason and UVM and Wheaton College in MA. Stuck in admissions purgatory til Dec 15th. He also tried to meet the EA II deadlines for Allegheny and Beloit – but Allegheny still doesn’t have his official ACT even though I ordered it on Nov. 16th! So, I think that means it’s unlikely we’ll hear by Dec 15th.
So – too late for us – but if you need ACT scores to arrive by Jan. deadlines, log on to the score request, and pick out the school - if the school has an “E” next to their name, they get scores electronically, likely 2 days after you’ve ordered. Sadly, Allegheny does not get scores electronically, and thus they really have taken longer than 2 weeks to arrive.

If there is an acceptance list made for this thread, maybe we can add our child’s prospective major? I am thinking that seeing another student accepted for a major your child is considering might inspire an application to that school.

@luckycharms949, so sorry about Pitt sending you glossy advertising when they’ve already sent your child into a satellite campus.
We were hoping for my son to get into George Mason’s Honors College because that is an in-state school for us, and we thought the HC would allow my son to have a “smaller school” feel inside the big school. Sadly, S17 has gotten about 3 or 4 recruiting emails “apply to Mason” after getting the email which said they had received his application, and the portal appears useless - it just has a “welcome to Mason” letter, with no application status information. Worst of all, after the third recruiting email, S17 sent an emailed question to his Mason Ad-counselor, and has yet to get a reply. I’m hoping this is still just all because the big school can’t figure out right hand from left hand, but it makes it so much easier for me to justify the higher cost for the LACs.

@CoyoteMom, GMU seems to be playing catchup with itself regarding applications. My son also applied EA in October and we get the same recruiting emails and reminders. We just got the email to pay the application fee via CommonApp last week and I haven’t gotten around to it. It did serve as a reminder that they were new to CA this year, and there were a few snags in hitting submit there too (so much so that I sent an FYI to S17’s school counselor).

@techmom99 I like the idea of including major, it might vary by school but that’s easy enough to include.

@CoyoteMom Has Allegheny stated they will notify on 12/15 for EA? I actually called them a while ago as nowhere did it state the EA notify date (not even a notify by date) and I wanted to know for travel planning. They did say they expected to turn them around quickly, and said a couple of weeks) but given that it is their first year offering EA they really didn’t know but seemed very optimistic. I seem to recall reading that they were sending financial awards on 12/15 for admitted students but the info on the website now doesn’t match that at all (and doesn’t mention EA as being considered for trustees but I’m sure that is not the case. I was hoping for notification before New Years based on what they said on the phone but don’t want to get S’s hopes up so haven’t told him that lol.

They only have one EA date though as far as I know. That’s super frustrating on the ACT scores. I have no idea when they received my son’s but I do know that the minute we got the portal log in we were able to see everything was there at once which was nice. Granted, I think I sent them in Sept. I just wanted all of that done with lots of buffer time. They did email when the received the FAFSA, which was before application and that was nice lol.

Congrats on Juniata, it’s a top choice for a good friends D. It fell off the list for S but it really looks lovely!

@techmom99, congrats on the acceptance, honor roll, and almost being done!

@CoyoteMom, welcome! Congrats on Juniata. I remember reading about them in CTCL when my oldest D was in the search process and it sounds like a really cool place. I don’t understand why paper scores take so long to send. When I do online banking it’s never more than a week for paper checks to be sent and the process is basically the same.

@eandesmom, I think sharing outcomes (not just acceptances!) is a great idea. We can celebrate or commiserate with each other and provide valuable data for those to come. I read that CC doesn’t allow links to google docs which is too bad. You could PM, but then the data wouldn’t be easily available for those who come along later. Copy/pasting is primitive, but maybe the best way to go. Would you start a separate thread?

As far as stats, I don’t love posting them, but it’s very useful when researching so I’d certainly be willing. And listing merit is a great idea. If people have the info, I’d also like to see the NPC vs actual aid. I also agree with @techmom99 that listing major would be helpful (and interesting!)

Having said that, I’m easy and will go along with whatever the general consensus is.

I like the idea of NPC versus actual aid! I would rather keep it here versus a new thread. I know we can’t post links so as nice as a doc would be, it wouldn’t be as accessible.

@snoozn pretty much covered my thinking on the outcomes project–it would need to be something that lived here so that others can use it who come along later. I was going to suggest NPC vs actual aid as that was definitely a black box for us and caused us no end of anxiety! Oh, one more thing I would include is EA/ED/RD decisions.

I would love to see us keeping track of admits and other info. I agree that it should be accessible to others for the future. Much smaller group here than the main thread so a post we update would probably work okay.

@LuckyCharms913, did your S find out if he could start at Pitt branch and then transfer into main after 1-2 years?

Some of the branches offer some merit up to $5,000, not sure if you qualify for PA grant as well.

It could be a more supportive environment, with smaller classes.

Well, I will start. So far mine was admitted EA to Whittier with $25K and Eckerd with $17K. She has approximately 3.3 UGPA, 4 APs, lots of honors, barely pulling a C in pre-calculus this year. ECs: started and is president of a school club. Writes beautifully, URM status. 1200 on the new SATs superscored, very heavily tilted to English.

Question from @eandesmom on acceptance thread for this forum:
*I would prefer the list by school only vs also by student/parent.
*Listing by major is a good suggestion.
*The main thread list is fun to read, but it doesn’t tell the whole story. I always wonder …
… was the student in the 25%, 50%, or 75% range for GPA and/or test scores?
… did the student have a “hook”?
… was the student in-state vs out of state (for state schools that impose caps)
… was the scholarship $ for a public vs private school, athletic (or other skill), merit?
