Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@itsgettingreal17 my S is possible NM and did his UA app yesterday. We figured it didn’t affect anything now so no reason to delay apping.

I thought I read the honors essay was “tell us about yourself” fluff anyway.

re: jobs vs EC’s

I get the impression that AC’s consider jobs the same way they would an EC. They understand that some kids have to work, and the ability to hold down a job and still get good grades speaks volumes about their resiliency and commitment.

And those of you with students who have already submitted apps, you are killing me. Don’t know whether to laugh or cry. How does that even happen??

+1! [-(

Popping in from vacation to Seattle. Good news is being from Florida we now get to check AP scores the first day they come out without figuring out ip stuff. Yay

jobs D recently got a job but it was more on her part of realizing her bank account has slowly been dwindling and bank of mom wasn’t replenishing it. I pay for most stuff but since she has been going out with her friends every day for lunch dinner shopping I told her that’s on her. I don’t think it’s necessary to have 12 bathing suits from PINK so if she wants another one she can buy it herself. Durong the school year I’m not sure how much she will work with cheer and other ec’s. Plus she won’t be going out like she is now over the summer.

Ok, back to vacation mode. B-)

Sent all scores. D completed Ole Miss basic app. Now she has to work on the supplements (several essays), get her recommendation requests submitted next week, and order transcript sent. This all means the full app won’t be complete until around August. But she’s glad to get started. Now she really feels like a senior.

Worked with my son on his resume to upload with his app. Exhausting. This is going to be a long app season.

Just put my UA DD15 (just finished first year but Junior by credits) on a plane to London. She is doing the UA Honors at Oxford study Abroad program. There are 6 US profs and about 32 students who will be gone for a month. The classes are UA classes and are taught by the UA profs so no issues with transferring. They live at Oxford and will travel around England via train. If your DC is looking at Bama and the Honors College, definitely check it out. She will come back with 6 credits. We chose not to use her scholarship money towards it. Better to use it for a full class load semester.

University of South Carolina is updated. Not sure you can submit it now, but its been updated for the Class of 2017.

Well DD is at her program at UPenn that starts Tues and yesterday they toured Columbia (her #1 for a long time and was planning on applying ED) and today Georgetown. She fell in love with Georgetown and wants to apply EA! I’m glad it’s non-binding EA so we can still compare offers. I think when I ran the NPC for Georgetown it was quite a bit pricier than some others, but I think still cheaper than UCs for us (if we get NCP waiver). She was planning to take two SAT subject tests in Nov but looks like she’ll be doing it Oct instead since Georgetown highly recommends three. She was going to do Lit and Bio but she’s going to do Lit and French instead since she’s completed French 4. She will have AP Lit in the Fall so only half way through the class before test but she’ll just have to self-study. She has already taken one SAT subject (world or US history I can’t recall which) and scored well. She will still apply to Columbia but not ED. She did like it and she loved NYC. How quickly things change!

@texaspg Yep all engineering get reviewed and do not get notified till December is what website says. In addition, yoiu get admitted to General Engineering and then apply for the one you want after Freshman year. IF you don’t get it oh well pick another major. My D does not like that at all. I suspect it will drop down.

Regarding jobs: For us, school is my D17’s job. With three sports and lots of volunteering, there really isn’t time. Plus this summer she will be gone several weeks on church mission trips and another camp. Also, we live in the suburbs with no transportation and while there are a lot of jobs available they would require me buying her a car, which I’m not prepared to do! She does do babysitting however which pays very well. It seems like it’s 50 / 50 where we live of kids having jobs.

@MSHopeful If applying to Georgetown EA, they will make a decision on the app without the 3 subj tests if the student has not yet taken them. There have been Georgetown students on other cc threads that said it is true they had not yet taken them and were admitted. If not admitted EA, the application is automatically deferred and they expect the student to get the 3 subj tests scores submitted for the RD application review. My son has to take two more and will do so in October but it’s nice to know that if something goes wrong, the app will still receive full consideration without those scores. Also, Georgetown requires you to send ALL tests taken (SAT and ACT) from all dates. They do not permit score choice. The application is up; it went live June 1.

@paveyourpath Thanks for the info! Luckily she was one and done with the ACT. She’ll probably want to take Oct subject tests just to have the best chance possible but it’s good to know they will still consider app in case that doesn’t work out.

My son has a interview at rice university during the first day of school. I wonder if that is a good time to visit. I guess at least school is in session.

UChicago sent out a book almost as big as the Yale book.

Other schools with open applications - OSU and ASU

We might get this one. UChicago has been sending S17 stuff since he took the Math II Subject test last summer. Guess they don’t know his GPA nor that he’s uninterested in anything east of the Rockies.

I’m about 20 pages behind but just wanted to jump in here on what I know of the CO engineering schools. D and I have been to visits at CU-Boulder and CSU and were impressed by both. In Boulder there is a general attitude that CU-B is “better” but not really among parents I’ve talked to. I’ve known very high stats kids who chose CSU over Boulder. As for Mines, I don’t know any Mines students, but I do know and have talked to previous Mines students who transferred to Boulder or CSU. There does seem to be very much a consensus that Mines is dreary and very serious to the point of looking down on students who want a real social life. Also extremely competitive. But take this with a big grain of salt since these are all transfer students. Those who chose to stay may have a very different take.

As for the towns – Boulder: Wonderful! Super-outdoorsy, great variety of shops and restaurants you don’t usually see in a town of this size. Pretty good music scene from what I hear from others (I’m not really a musico-phile, my last two concerts were Tim Minchin and Weird Al) Great dance scene. Fort Collins I don’t know as well, but downtown is lovely and I only hear good things. Golden I’ve been to a bit more. Kind of a quaint western-y downtown, but not really comparable to the others and a lot of it is just normal suburban.

Perhaps most importantly, CU and CSU have great food. No idea on Mines.

Like always, your mileage may vary!

So the child has returned from brain camp, and is severely jetlagged (four hours time difference!), but incredibly happy with the experience. In parallel to the way George Mason didn’t impress her last year at her summer camp, Muhlenberg did impress her.

@dfbdfb That’s great she had a good time. Sounded like a great camp.

I learned recently that the school is pronounced MULE-en-berg. Who knew?

Another one I had wrong: Wilamette is pronounced Will-AM-it.

I’m sure you didn’t have any issues with pronunciation @dfbdfb =))

Muhlenberg totally owns their name, too—their mascot is the mules.

The one I’m disappointed in is Drake—how can you have that name and not have a dragon as your mascot?? (They’re the bulldogs, of all things.)
