I was having some last minute thoughts about our list…we applied to a lot of public schools but failed to look at their out of state acceptance rates and we realized that a lot of the “target/match” schools aren’t really matches at all when it comes to oos students. So we were thinking about adding a few privates to the list to avoid the oos/in state bias.
Any thoughts on Clark university in Massachusetts? or any other private schools in a similar tier to clark?
D is away for the rest of the week so nothing will happen with apps. I’m glad she’ll have a few days of no job, no studying, and no typical EC stuff. She’s been working like a machine this year. I find it a little sad but at least she had a chance together with friends last weekend.
The CA is complete. I have no idea if she hit submit yet for any schools, though I know she signed up for an overnight and a scholarship competition. I confirmed she knows the deadlines for those schools with priority deadlines for scholarships, but otherwise I have been on pause from any college app nagging because of the big project. And I’ll try to remain on pause until she comes back and has a chance to regroup and catch up on any work.
@Veronica02 I feel yah! After draft #11 on DD’s essay…arghhhh! For someone who is almost an introvert, she has a lot to say in writing, encompassing the same kinda-theme but just a lot of “ideas”. And I think that became a problem because when it came to finalizing, DD would try to get from the myriads of selections in the buffet trying to put it in the one-final version that became way too much stressful. Another problem that we realized in this process is that there were just way too many sets of eyes that “critiqued” the essay. Some just rocked the boat even more tumultuous than it already was
However, as of 11pm last night, she applied to 1 ED and 2 EAs through Common App. DD wants to finish the other 2 public schools (1 in-state and the other one in a neighboring state) tonight via Coalition App. B-I-G MILESTONE!!! Ahead of the Nov 1st deadline. Just waiting for 1 more Letter of Recommendations from her teacher. FAFSA and CSS are also done.
Funny, as she was so nervous to hit the submit button last night for her ED school, I gave her a tight hug and said it will be okay then I recall the moment when she was less than 2 y.o and we were living then in the city in our tiny apartment and we had to give her a medicine, must have been a liquid Tylenol or something — and D put both of her hands to cover her mouth and asked “How does it taste? Is it yummy? Is it yucky?”. That fear and uncertainty of it all — and it will all be okay in the grand scheme of things.
D has a writing consultant helping her with her essay - it’s the only part of the whole college process we hired out. She did a summer intensive and then has a series of followup meetings. On the one hand, I think this was a really good idea, because though D does a lot of writing in school, they don’t do any personal essay writing at all. So it’s really new to her.
But the downside is that I think this process raised the bar a lot for my D as to what is a good-enough essay. She’s been going back and forth a lot of the last week about her essay, and her first deadline is coming up fast. As of this morning, I think she’s ok with it. But she wants to send it back to the consultant one more time. Which might lead to more re-writing…
She says if there are major changes recommended, she will ignore them, or at least not act on them until after submitting her two (not super selective) EA applications. I hope.
She doesn’t HAVE to submit EA at all, but for one of the schools, she is taking advantage of an EA audition on campus, and we have to book the tickets soon or they get more expensive. But if she doesn’t make the EA deadline, then that’s all to waste…
@Booajo I haven’t pressed D too hard for info, so most of my intel is from H. He says he’s never seen D so relaxed and happy on a college campus. She is very comfortable with the vibe, which seems to be confident without being arrogant or awkward. No snoot, D says. Very social. Not too focused on sports or any one aspect of college life; the balance feels right to D and H. D has visited some classes and she says the students seem smart and focused. A professor chatted her up after class and took her to his office so he could share more info with her. Nice!
Their tour guides go through 15 hours of training and H says the info sessions were thoughtful and helpful. Lots of effort is put into the “face” of the school.
D likes the breadth of offerings. There are like 6-8 majors at USC that are all in her wheelhouse; she can’t decide which she would choose. It seems like the best of all worlds for her: big, diverse student body, innovative curriculum, support of a private university, beautiful campus in a large, sophisticated city with endless opportunities.
D is visiting some more classes today. I’ll be able to share more later.
Did anyone just submit 2016 taxes yesterday? Wondering how long it takes for the IRS website to update so I can pull the information from their site for the FAFSA.
And all of a sudden I have the “Another day of sun” song from La La Land playing in my head
I’m glad to hear your D had/is having a great time; a few colleagues and children of good friends went there and can’t say enough.
question for those who submitted UMD app through coalition.
D18 submitted the coalition app for UMD yesterday but when she views the application checklist, it says application not received.
Your Application Complete Date Is Not Received
None of the other submissions - (transcript, scores etc) show as received. Is this a glitch or does it take time for the coalition to show the dates?
@amominaz I always do my taxes early and it only takes about 7-10 days to get the direct deposit refund.
I think the FAFSA recommends waiting 2-3 weeks after filing tax return to try the DRT.
If tax was due then it might take longer and you might need to wait until the payments clears or even longer.
But you don’t need to wait to do FAFSA. You could enter the numbers from the tax return manually, and then go back and do DRT once the return has processed.
But assets are reported as of the day you submit FAFSA so you can’t go back and update them later.
@amominaz We snail mailed ours on Sept 29, and I used the IRS tool yesterday, so roughly three weeks for paper returns. Probably faster if you e-filed, and I didn’t check every single day, either.
