Some honors programs are also associated with extra scholarships.
Having a moment of panic because while D submitted for EA at 3 schools the other night we haven’t done FAFSA yet. I started it last night and put in for ID but now worried it won’t get to them by Nov 1. One school is CSS school. I thought I had longer for that stuff. Know what I’ll be doing tonight…
I am finding this site stressful right now. So many of you (and your kids) are so much further than mine. Still no applications, gets annoyed when I prod him, doesn’t see why it is a concern…
This is so different than my first, who was already in to multiple schools by now.
Deep breaths. He will be ok in the end; I just have to give up on my sense of control.
@swtaffy904 We completed the FAFSA this weekend and yesterday we got it approved. They said the schools will get the report one day after its approved. So hopefully, your will be just as fast. I just checked a school we applied to EA in GA and they received the FAFSA today just as the government told me they would. Good luck.
@birdie3 thank you so much. I will finish it and get it in as quickly as possible. My bad, I was focusing on what D had to do and let my part lapse
@booajo My son sounds like yours, so I’m feeling the sentiment your post expresses. Although S has some apps in, that would not have happened if I hadn’t prodded. There are a few more Nov 1 deadlines S needs to meet, and then some Dec 1 deadlines. I anticipate having to keep prodding because S just doesn’t seem to have a sense of urgency about this process. I’ve accepted that he is going to be annoyed with me, though I am trying to prod as minimally as necessary.
Regarding the FAFSA I didn’t realize that some schools required it to be in early; I knew it had opened early this year but thought there was still time to finish it. That’s good to know but also a bit worrisome. I did check D18’s top school and they have a much later filing date for FAFSA than some I’m reading on here.
@birdie3 , thank you so much for that info bc I had no idea the schools had to have it by Nov 1st (and since my D applied EA to a few, I guess I can see the reasoning). I read @swtaffy904 ‘s message and got really nervous too. Guess I better get on this!
I think the FAFSA and CSS only need to be in early if you want the EA/ED school to provide financial aid info with the early admission. Otherwise, I think you can file later and receive the financial aid info with the RD students. But I could be wrong on that. We just did it because, well, we could (and maybe I’m a little type A on this stuff ).
@dadotwoboys I do want to get financial info early as the EAs for my D are her safeties. Part of that means we need to be able to afford. She won’t qualify for anything thru FAFSA but that needs to be in to be considered for scholarship, right?
@Kayak24 sorry to have scared you but I guess it’s best we all realize now while we still have a week. Let’s hope we all get everything in!
@swtaffy904, do you mean merit scholarships or college-provided scholarships with a need component? If you mean merit only, no you do not necessarily need to submit the FAFSA. Some schools require FAFSA for merit aid and some do not; check with your D’s schools to find out. Some schools, while not requiring FAFSA, will give students a small scholarship (I’ve seen $500 and $1000) just for submitting it even if the student would otherwise be full pay from a need standpoint. My son’s college definitely does not require the FAFSA for merit scholarships and because it’s the only place he applied I didn’t bother to fill it out.
I had the FAFSA scare last week. D has two EA schools. One requires the FAFSA to be filed by November 15, the other not until February, SOOOOO, check with each school.
@Booajo and @gclsports, same here with D. We will make it, but this has not been fun!
@Booajo @gclsports @suzy100 Procrastinators unite! They’ll get it done. Keep the faith. Patience. D has 2 EA’s and 1 REA before 11/1 and she’s really close to the finish line and the submit button(s).
Actually, the State of Florida requires the FAFSA for the Bright Futures scholarship. There is no financial component to Bright Futures, so I’m not sure why it is required. But it is, so pretty much everybody does it here.
We were told that some of my son’s schools want to see the FAFSA in order to determine merit aid. Only two of his schools on his list require the CSS profile.
@traveler98 I am talking merit only. I read somewhere on here that if you want merit you still need to do FASFA. This stuff is confusing as can be!!!
Good news is I just got my FAFSA ID code, I just submitted for it yesterday and it came today. I could go ahead and finish FAFSA now but D hasn’t been around so I haven’t gotten her to submit for her FAFSA ID. Hmmmm maybe I can find a work around…
Bottom line is my goal is get it done asap.
@swtaffy904 I set up my daughter’s ID for her (I have the password to her email, which she gladly turned over in exchange for me doing a lot of this stuff). Actually, I filled out all parts of the FAFSA including her part.
Some may disagree with this, but that’s how we did it here.
I thought that for most schools - that merit doesnt require FAFSA?
None of the 10 small LACs my D is applying to require FAFSA for merit aid.
One of my daughter’s friends told her that her private CC advised her not to apply for financial aid (she would be full pay anyhow) as it could adversely effect her application. I had not heard that. I already sent the FAFSA to D18’s top schools. We would also be full pay. Hoping I didn’t make a mistake by doing so.
I thought most of the schools require the FAFSA anyhow?
