Wow reading MIT and Northeastern threads is depressing and scary. Hoping for some good news soon for my S18.
Interesting about the Dragon year. I have heard speculation that DS’ class was larger because a lot of couples wanted to either have a baby in the last millennium or in 2000.
Well, the Year of the Dragon depends. My daughter was born in 2000, but thanks to when the dates fall is actually the Year of the Rabbit.
Signed, a mom who adopted her Chinese daughters and had way too much time on her hands waiting =))
Here’s a chart I found - the effect isn’t staggering but it is there. The ease of applying by common app is probably the bigger factor.
1998 3,941,553
1999 3,959,417
2000 4,058,814
2001 4,025,933
2002 4,021,726
2012 was another dragon year and there was no corresponding birth bump (3.95 million, same as the year before). I’d say it was much more to do with Y2K than the Chinese zodiac, at least if we’re talking about births in the US. And I’m sure the steadily rising number of high school seniors plays a factor but I don’t think it’s the primary factor at play.
@Booajo I totally agree. I was excited to come on last night and see the MIT admits. Instead it was sobering to read that thread. I now feel more anxious than ever about results for my D in the next two weeks.
D just got a likely letter from Cornell University !!!
@LMHS73 YAY!!! Congratulations to your D!
Congrats to your D @LMHS73!
@LMHS73 Go Big Red!!
@LMHS73 congratulations!!!
@LMHS73 that’s great news!! Did they update the portal for it? My daughter doesn’t see any decision on her portal
Thanks everyone. As you can probably imagine, D is on cloud nine with her recent acceptances! She knows the game, and was fully prepared to be rejected from all of her reaches. I think I posted a while back that it wouldn’t have surprised me if she got into none of them, all of them, or some of them - the process just seems so random sometimes.
As for me, I’m so grateful to the cc community for teaching me just about everything I know about the admissions process! I was totally green when S15 was in the running for national merit & D was in her freshman year. I leaned heavily on other cc parents and asked a lot of questions on the forums and through PM’s and everyone always patiently helped me out. It’s crazy that I feel closer to many of you whom I’ve never actually met in person than I feel with many of my neighbors and acquaintances! With all of the great advice we got from our cc mentors, we never had to hire an admissions consultant or anything like that & she never attended a paid ACT/SAT test prep course. Lots of hard work by D, a good safety school picked-out, and some luck - that’s the plan we went with!!
@msatoor; D is still in school, so I don’t know if she has checked the Cornell portal yet; I’ll let you know later.
DD was accepted to Dickinson this afternoon, with a very nice scholarship. So nice to get an acceptance… it’s been a while since the last ones, which were all EA. Looking forward to having all the answers soon!
I sometimes look back on a post I made & wonder if it sounded different than the way I intended it to sound. I just want to say that in my post 14294 I was in NO WAY implying that it is a bad thing to invest in an admissions consultant or in standardized test prep classes, or in study books or any other number of options that are out there. I was just trying to say that thanks to the help I’ve received from experienced cc mentors, I feel like (in a way) we got a bunch of those paid services for free.
@taverngirl, congratulations on the Dickinson acceptance & the nice scholarship!
So nice to read all of the positive news!
@ShrimpBurrito McGill has had to deal with secondary school strikes in Quebec and elsewhere in Canada. Just keep them informed of the situation.
S18 has all decisions in hand and all merit scholarships in hand. He has confirmed enrollment at two schools and has received his housing assignment at his #1. He got the room and dorm he wanted so I am going to say we are 99.9% headed to Colorado State University. Time to decline enrollment at 14 other schools and open spots to other kids!
Sharing more good news because I’m so excited! DD also accepted to URochester today–one of her two reach schools. It’s going to make her decision a lot tougher than she thought.
