@brickkicker
Congrats, that is a great problem to have!!
@brickkicker congrats, and same here, re: unexpected Skidmore admittance! St Petersberg vs. Saratoga Springs is quite a contrast!
@brickkicker Congratulations to your son in Skidmore! And good luck with the decision.
eta: @Turquoise52 And to you too! Great news!
@brickkicker congratulations! Yes, definitely a good problem to have but it is hard. I well remember the stress of deciding with S17 and it’s so hard to watch!
Congrats @brickkicker and @Turquoise52!!
Just popping in to say congrats to everyone on college acceptances!
@brickkicker @Turquoise52 - Congrats on Skidmore!!
Hello All! I am so delighted to have found this thread! I arrive a little late but wanted to add my 2 cents because my kid fits this profile and we have had a very successful admissions season by choosing carefully for fit. You do not have to have a perfect SAT score or 4.0+ gpa to be wanted by excellent schools.
My D applied ED to Hampshire and was accepted with their largest merit scholarship (before the recent fiasco - if you don’t know about it, you don’t want to know). Once that fell through she had to rush and apply to other schools and as of today she has been accepted at Univ of Puget Sound with an excellent merit award, The New School in NYC again with great merit money and also at Sarah Lawrence (no merit money). My D has dyslexia and adhd but is driven and ambitious. She also only applied to test optional schools. We are still only waiting to hear from Clark Univ who should notify next week.
Thank you all for being here and offering some sanity in this seemingly insane world of college admissions!!
Hey @rfm512 ! I’m the person whose twins applied EA to Hampshire, and who were SO disappointed. We had already submitted our apps at that point and, unlike the ED applicants, didnt really feel we could add further colleges. We’ve had some acceptances, but nothing like Hampshire. Congrats to your daughter! Think she’ll pick east or west coast?
@Britmom5 Hi again! I hope your twins have somewhere they are excited about! By the time the Hampshire thing was finally over, I think my D was just so pissed at how it was handled, it made it easier to move on. Its hard to say as of today where she will go.
I think she is less than psyched about New School’s urban “campus” and Sarah Lawrence seems quite isolated. I think she thought SLC would be more interested in her because it is very similar in teaching style to Hampshire but no merit money offered. Univ of Puget Sound is so gorgeous and feels "warm and fuzzy"and much easier for us to get to from NM than the east coast, but her primary interest is psychology and Clark’s program is so strong. Until we hear from Clark, she will not make a decision however, based on location alone, it would definitely be west coast.
The best advice I have read on CC and I passed on to my D was to “love the schools that love you”. Once she started to think in those terms, its like her perspective totally changed. She was no longer interested in the “reach” where she would be lucky just to be there and started to see other schools as “smart” for recognizing her special accomplishments.
@rfm512. That’s what I keep telling my boys - but, unfortunately some of the the schools that love them the most don’t have exactly the majors they are looking for. One S19 applied to UMAss, and got into Honors college with some merit - and he REALLY loved the pioneer valley. Maybe he’ll get to experience the [FOUR] college consortium yet! Good luck with Clark!
@Britmom5 Ahhh! Yes! Congrats on Umass and Honors at that! What majors are they interested in?
D was accepted to UConn today. So, either (a) her GC was able to talk her way out of the late transcript, or (b) there is actually still a chance of admission with a late application. It’s not top of her list, doesn’t have her major (she applied exploratory), but is close to home.
Wanted to mention something about my D’s acceptance to Sarah Lawrence. They offered her no merit money and she was kinda bummed, but after seeing some students waitlisted there with nearly perfect stats, I thought I should mention it here. My daughter has dyslexia and adhd but is ambitious and driven. She applied with no test scores and submitted papers she had written on psychological analysis of the effects of gun violence on society and the the effects of growing up in families with severe mental illness. (All observations and conclusions based on personal interviews.) She also is a visual artist and built large art installations dedicated to victims of gun violence and those photos were submitted as well.
SLC may be a “reach” for the kids who typically fit in this thread but SLC obviously is willing to take a closer look and even offer admission to a student who may demonstrate unique gifts or drive and perseverance in the face of challenges and for that SLC should be strongly commended.
So for parents in this thread who think their kid may fit into the unique environment at SLC, make sure to give it a shot!
Congratulations on all the acceptances everyone!! We are waiting on final two, then it is decision time.
Congrats @momzilla2D - acceptance always good.
@momzilla2D Good to know schools will not hold that late transcript against the kids if it was out of their hands. Congrats on the acceptance.
Welcome @rfm512 and thanks for the inspirational admit story. It is so helpful to future applicants and the parents who are helping them.
Congrats on everyone’s acceptances so far!
Congrats to everyone on the admits. It really hit me today that this is all coming to an end very quickly.
We have a couple more admitted student days coming up Pitt (3/30) and JMU/VT (4/5-6). After that we are off for a much needed spring break trip 4/13-20, it will be nice to decompress for a week. We are hoping we have a decision before we go but not sure. Might get while we are there. I think our D19 remembers last year when we were away and at the next table someone made their college decision.
Prom is 5/3 and D19 is going with friends, no boyfriend. The HS then holds a post-prom at the school from 1-4 am with games, DJ, etc. Last day of school for seniors is 5/24. D19 is going to CA the following week with friends instead of beach week, which is much better for my stress level. Graduation is 6/6.
Thanks for letting me share here. My H is not interested in hearing my ramblings anymore.
Congrats on admits and condolences on denials. D19 denied at Bates College this morning. She’s not sweating it at all as it was never on her radar - a total lottery with average GPA and test scores way, way above hers. She wanted to apply to a school in Maine (from NorCal !?!?? This native-New Englander-who-will-never-go-back is merely an assistant in this process) and Bates was the most appealing to her of the options. As an FYI, Parchment and Cappex have been spot on in terms of predicting admittance and rejection for D19. Prep Scholar has not been accurate at all. We have two more to go, one on Monday, the other on Thursday.
@Turquoise52 we found cappex pretty accurate bas well.
