Congrats @Gatormama
There is a discussion of the HIPAA (not HIPPA) release forms, power of attorney, etc on the ‘getting ready for college’ thread, including who keeps the forms. There have been a few discussions lately about exchanging contact info with roommates, the RA, the roommate’s parents.
@STEM2017 we did the same as @carolinamom2boys for D17, and will have to with S19. You should regardless of whether there is an existing condition. For D17, she goes to school OOS in CA so we had to have them notarized in CA, as well as in our home state. We were fortunate that there was a FEDEX mail store inside our hotel who had an onsite notary on staff. We did not need a lawyer for any paperwork.
We were fortunate that a friend with an older son told us to make sure we had this paperwork in place b/f D17 left for college. His son, who went to school several states away from home, was in an awful car accident while away at school which required them to make some medical decisions on his behalf. Thankfully, their son recovered and we were grateful for the advice!
I read this thread all the time but don’t post much but wanted to say congrats @Gatormama!! You are one of the first people I remember from when I joined CC and I love to see that your D ended up with such a great outcome.
Also, thanks @carolinamom2boys for more health related info - I learned something from you on both threads!
Thanks @eh1234! I think he’s talented - but I’m Mom, and therefore biased! It’s lovely to have others see it too. It would take something of a miracle to make it affordable - especially as he’s a twin. His brother has been accepted for architecture at Pratt - and the idea of them both being in Brooklyn, pursuing their individual passions - but close at hand to each other, was immensely appealing. Yes - he has many other wonderful choices - including what was his first choice (not counting Clive Davis, which we thought was unreachable) until yesterday. He still has all of the benefits of that program - but now it will feel more like second best, instead of the having quite the same excitement about it that he had until yesterday…
So very happy for you and your D @Gatormama ! You both taught us so much about the affordable technical theatre admissions process and I am looking forward to seeing what your D does at WVU!
A brief update – D19 has been set on her decision since December, but – just because she wants to – we are doing a visit next week so she can sit in on some classes. Her visit happens to be timed with the school’s Spring Open House, so she’ll also be able to talk to Student Services folks while we’re there. She’ll probably do another tour for her major as well. (Much easier this time as there’s no portfolio to lug around!)
She is happy with her overall results (acceptances at all twelve of her schools) but none of that seems to matter right now as she is so looking forward to attending her dream school.
This was our first time at the admissions rodeo, and I have to say I learned So Very Much, and it will be quite helpful for when we are supporting S22 for his turn. (At least he will not have a portfolio review process to contend with.)
@Britmom5 Wow! Congratulations to your son! My older son is a composer who graduated from CalArts so I am very aware of the reputation of Clive Davis! I also understand calculating tuition plus living expenses in NYC and it can be daunting…especially for twins no less. Maybe a talk with the financial aid dept to explain the special circumstances might be of use?? You son is obviously very talented and they may be willing to do what it takes to get him enrolled??
@Britmom5 Congratulations to your son on Tisch/NYU/Clive Davis! That is an amazing opportunity. Hoping there’s a way to make it happen, but totally get the difficult spot you’re in.
@Gatormama Congratulations to your daughter on her decision!
We have a HIPAA release and a limited power of attorney (takes effect in case of her inability to make choices on her own behalf, as well as allowing us to do things like request absentee ballots for her) for our D17, and will set up the same for D19 upon her upcoming 18th birthday. Most states, there are forms freely available and all they need is a notary, and in some cases not even that.
First and foremost, I too am grateful for this thread and apologize to all for not being fully present as I would like. I value everyone’s contributions and look forward to seeing final choices!
I will be updating the summary, I promise!
@STEM2017 we did the same as the others for S17 and need to do it for S19. We did it for both states, home and away.
Not sure if this site will let me link, but I work for a law firm and one of the attorneys wrote up a guide for parents with college bound students: https://kkc-law.com/files/PDFs/College%20Preparation%20Tips.pdf
@Gatormama: We toured WCU once already and my D loved it as well. She is an education major and wants to specialize in special ed. Looking forward to the admitted student days, hopefully one shines through as the clear choice wherever that may be.
Congrats to all on the great news.
@JBSeattle and @dfbdfb I am hoping you both are as lucky as we have been to find a fabulous local parent!!
Big shout out to @TwinMom2023 who has been an angel this year!! She lives near D18’s campus and has been there a few times when we needed a local mom for transportation and hurricane support or just a friendly parent to go to breakfast with. More than that my daughter has gotten to know her and I have too and we consider her a family friend. It is such a comfort being 14 hours away knowing that we have a great friend and mom near our daughter.
Also is nice to have friend there when I go to visit!
I am hoping to help her find her counterparts at Richmond and H&W and I hope you find them as well!! There is a loco parentis thread on CC that might be a place to start!
Love you @TwinMom2023!
Ahhh @MinnieFan …now I understand what that thread is about. Have seen it pop up in latest threads and always thought it was about something else. ? Thanks for sharing!
@taverngirl Thanks for sharing that. There are so many pieces of the college puzzle that need to come together now that the decision is made and graduation is getting close, it’s really starting to become a bit overwhelming. I’m afraid we’re going to miss something.
All decisions are in. Within the last week, D was waitlisted at UMiami and Tulane (both after being deferred EA), and was denied from UMaryland. UMiami and Tulane take very, very few from the waitlist, but D was happy that it was a waitlist, not a denial. UMaryland hurt because D had applied EA, but GC sent transcript late, so was pushed to RD round. She applied to a limited enrollment program, so can’t help but think that EA probably would have helped.
D has some favorites among the acceptances. Not dwelling on the ones that got away. We’ll be visiting Clemson on Monday, and then I’m hoping for a decision next week.
Here’s the status…
Accepted: James Madison, Ohio State, URI (w merit), Clemson, UMass, UConn
Waitlist: UMiami (deferred EA), Tulane (deferred EA)
Denied: Northeastern, UMichigan (deferred EA), UMaryland (deferred EA)
Attending: Stay tuned…

@momzilla2D - Hugs for the disappointments - it definitely stings, but great choices for her going forward! Enjoy Clemson!
@momzilla2D make sure you bring a jacket to Clemson, it’s been unseasonably cold here. Highs only in the 50s expected.
