I was wrong about ED in the earlier post. Some colleges allow kids to apply both ED and EA (Columbia for example).
But this only benefits if the students are rejected or deferred by ED schools.
@drewsmom17 my DS16 is a sophomore at the Honors College of CofC. Great school. He is a CS major. Might be worth a look for your son when moving your daughter in. Feel free to PM with any questions. CofC is DS19ās top choice with Clemson a close second.
@Boilermom your explanation hit the nail on the head. My DS will be applying to colleges that accept on average 10-20 boys in his intended major. I keep telling him that he must cast a (very) wide net.
Hello parents of 2019ersā¦
.May i ask if any of yaāll have kiddos taking APUSH that will be taking the AP exam? Trying to find out how realistic it is to get a 4 or 5 on it. D is 2021 and taking APUSH next year in 10th. I have not been able to find out how many kids at our school take the AP exam and what scores they get.
I think most do dual credit which is the exact same very labor intensive class as AP (they just donāt take the AP exam, and pay for dual credit)ā¦
Trying to figure out which route to go. Thanks.
@BingeWatcher If you want to know how the students at your Dās school score on AP exams, ask your Dās guidance counselor for a copy of the schoolās College Board Summary Report. This report will give you the percentages of scores in each score category for every AP exam taken at your Dās school.
hey all⦠trying to get caught up on the last ten pages that Iāve missed. So many comments and questions I had while reading but of course now I canāt remember everything.
Because of the new āHoganā law we only have three days of Spring Break. Our last day off is tomorrow.
We went to College of William and Mary last weekend and we all loved it. My son said a few times that he felt like he saw his people. The science buildings were impressive and son loved the research labs. The freshman dorms were disappointing but that seems to be norm. Loved Colonial Williamsburg being right there. We had a great tour guide.
I left thinking our son should apply ED since he really liked it and with the cost we wonāt get any aid but my husband says he should apply to Duke ED because if he got in we would make it happen. But with undergrad research being important it would be hard for that to happen at Duke.
Tomorrow we are going to Univ of Delaware. Son and I are sitting in a Clinical neuroscience class. We were suppose to tour at 10am but the class is at 10:10. I wrote the visiting office an email and asked to change to 2pm tour but they never wrote back. Iām undecided if I should hang around until 2pm and try to get on that tour or if we should just do our own tour after the class is over.
I think son will apply to all EAās but almost all of his top choices are ED which really stinks!
Oh and the whole topic of Questbridge and other organizations leaves me with more bad feelings then I care to share.
Itās a little frustrating that my son will work extremely hard to obtain admission because he has nothing that āhelpsā him
heās a white boy, whose parents and grandparents completed college and graduate school, heās not from low income, we are still married. I donāt even care about paying āfullā price just wished they were all judged fairly on their accomplishments. It is definitely one of the reasons he decided to go full IB Diploma, trying to find something unique. And IB diploma isnāt that unique anymore!
Have a wonderful day everyone. We are visiting family in NJ. Interesting last night we visited husbands family and his Dad isnāt feeling ārightā ⦠and then woke up this morning and my mom couldnāt get out of bed because she felt very dizzy. Getting Easter dinner prepared and relaxing with my parents and sister.
@BingeWatcher S19 is taking a combo AP Lang/APUSH class and will test. His school is on a block schedule so typically they take a semester to cover a year of material. This has been a whole year class, combining both APs and taught by 2 teachers. I will be curious to see how he does on th AP and ACT writing. I can let you know how it goes but it might be too late for scheduling.
My DS16 got a 5 on the APUSH exam. DS19 will most likely get a 3 or a 4 . My kids take AP vs DE classes because they are free and DE are not . The schools that DS16 applied to have more credit for AP than DE because AP classes have a standardized test to measure mastery , DE classes do not.
@Bingewatcher my D19 is in APUSH and will be taking the AP exam. APUSH is her lowest grade (around a 85) and I hope she can get a 3 or 4. If you kid is a history buff this class might be enjoyable, but my D doesnāt have a feel for it .
@Boilermom yes, I guess that was my point. It sounds like she felt she had safeties but perhaps based on program size, she really had none. Which is heartbreaking.
@Kona2012, there are lots of schools where a male would have an edge in admissions. Also plenty of schools where ethnicity is not taken into account, or where whites are an over-represented majority. If diversity is not high on your sonās list of criteria, then maybe a school that values diversity isnāt the best fit for him anyway.
Diversity IS high on my Dās list. Sheās ruled out lots of places because they donāt have it. Other places do have it, but it would be easier for a boy to get in than it would be for her. Cāest la vie. Weāll either find someplace that she feels is a good fit, or sheāll have to compromise, just like all the rest of the college-seekers out there.
@BingeWatcher - My D17 took APUSH during her junior year. She found the class challenging and it was one of her lower grades. I think her teacher was a hard grader and prepared them well. She recommended an extra study book that my D used for prep but I donāt think she studied extensively. She got a 5 and I think being a strong writer helped.
@BingeWatcher do the kids take sample tests in class? I know our teacher has old sample questions that she uses for quizzes sometimes. And the kids are constantly practicing those DBQs and LEQs. The school knows our percentage of 4s and 5s and the teachers know the score history as well. Iām assuming most schools have that info. Honestly, I donāt understand when a school has an AP class where the kids donāt do well on the test. If that is happening then the class needs to be altered in some way to make sure the kids are being better prepared.
My kidās calc AB teacher actively discourages the students to take the AP test at the end of the year, she says her kids never make above a 3. I have feelings about this, but to express them fully would probably break the profanity filter.
@shuttlebus, that is exactly what I need to know! Thank you all.
Just curious, but donāt most colleges that give credit for a 5 on an AP exam also give credit for a 4? I could be wrong since I havenāt looked at the most competitive schools. My kids are laid back and wouldnāt see a 4 as a failure, nor would they see the possibility of getting a 4 as a reason not to take the class. Different strokes, I guessā¦
I think my sonās AP Physics 1 teacher said that she had only a few students get a 4 or a 5 last year, but this particular test has a very low pass rate. Last year, only 5% received a 5. If my son doesnāt pass, oh well. Heās learned a lot this year.
@homerdog At my local public school it is extremely rare for anyone to get anything higher than a 2 on the AP Calc exam. In fact, 1ās were the most common score every single year I requested a copy of the College Board Summary Report. From speaking with my friends, the kids get Aās in the class, but donāt do well on the exams. Yet another example of why I homeschool my kids.
Some schools also give credit for a 3. There is no general rule
@shuttlebus thatās too bad. Our BC Calc kids (class done in one year so covers AB and BC topics) almost all get 5s. Just another example of how high schools differ and why admissions counselors need to see standardized tests to compare kids. If you are able to homeschool calc, more power to you!
Snowing again in the Boston area, going to get a few inches. I rode my bike the other day and hit some golf balls in shorts, and almost planted some flowers and grass.
