I’ve often told S19 not to count on AP credits when he gets to college, and he’s finding now that the schools he’s targeting limit the amount of AP credit that they offer in some way. I think for us, it will depend on where he ends up. If he ends up in “top” school that has their own introductory curriculum, so be it. I would actually like to see him at a school that has some early “boot camp” type courses - in writing, research methodology, communications, etc., because I feel that’s going to be invaluable to him. If he ends up at our state flagship and the idea is to save money for grad school, then great - use AP credit to your heart’s content.
@elena13 Holy cow! AP Physics exam is Tuesday? I can’t believe how fast everything is going! Stress level here seems OK. I was hoping to steal my son away after his last AP exam on the 16th to do some college touring, thinking the kids would still be around for finals and graduation, etc. but he is adamant he doesn’t want to go. I can understand - he’s worked hard and deserves a break, plus a lot of schools will be done with finals by then. So, I guess our LAC touring will have to wait until the Fall, because I refuse to take him on a tour of a small LAC during the summer when the students are not there. I think “vibe” or flavor, or whatever you want to call it will be so important when looking at a smaller school.
Hello, posting to get subscribed to the thread.
My D is interested in nursing, but so far her college list is still very preliminary.
Next week she has AP exams on Wed (Lit) and Friday (USHist), and the week after on Mon (Bio) and Tues (Calc)
Then right after she needs to start studying for the June ACT.
She’s definitely feeing stressed.
OK, so S19 doesn’t take Physics until the 14th, but he informs me he’s taking 2 SAT subject tests tomorrow. I said, “how did I not know this?” And he said, “because I didn’t care enough about them to tell you.” OK. I guess he’s not stressed about those. Lol.
I think d19 is only a little stressed about APUSH. It’s probably ramp up during the week.
Well, really she is stressed about homework on top of testing for the next couple weeks. She will be stressed next weekend for AP Lang. She thinks AP chem and Calc BC will be ok and isn’t excessively stressed about them.
@Trixy34 S19’s attempt at studying for SAT 2 History tomorrow involves sitting down tonight and going through the College Board’s book of practice tests. He has had zero time in the last ten days to study for it. He won’t get home from track meet until 8:00. I made him tell the coaches that he can’t stay any later than that tonight. The coach told him that his mom needs to chill out. Erg.
He just called and he’s trying to cram a few problems in between practice and the meet. Fingers crossed that APUSH class and studying will rub off on SAT score because there’s obviously a lack of hours going into the prep for the SAT 2.
D19 wasn’t very stressed about AP world history, but now she is because she says she bombed her final exam in the course yesterday. (Her school’s spring semester ends with a three-week minimester-type course, so regular classes ended yesterday.) I tried helping out by pointing out to her that she’s done spectacularly well enough overall up to that point that she’d’ve had to have gotten below a 50%on the final to lose her A in the course, but I fear I just made it worse—now she’s simply convinced she got below a 50% on the final. :-<
My D19 went back to school today for the first time after the 6 day AZ teacher walkout. She came home happy because her Anatomy & Physiology teacher told the class they would have to cut short their dog dissections due to the loss of class days. That was a huge relief. D19 says she didn’t mind dissecting fetal pigs or cats but hated dissecting dogs.
I wish there was a sad face next to the like for that post @dfbdfb
I’ve been there and done that with the stress about Ann APUSH test this week. Blarg.
What does everyone think a “reportable” score would be for SAT US History and SAT Literature? I know kids really need an 800 on Math 2 but I just don’t know for the other tests. Looking at the percentile chart for each test does not help as they are all so different. 800 on Math 2 is only the 82nd percentile. Would reporting any score over 700 be ok for pretty highly ranked colleges for the other two tests? Or should they be mid-700s? I’m already trying to decide if he will have to retake them and he hasn’t even taken them once yet. He’s really worried that he just has not had enough time to properly prepare for tomorrow.
Oh @dfbdfb poor thing. Will you find out soon how she did? I’m sure she did fine and it’s just jitters, but what an awful thing to have hanging over your head for the weekend.
@homerdog I’m not sure. Are we allowed to post links here? I think an admissions coach I went to school with addressed that in a recent video blog on Facebook. I’ll have to check for it.
OK, I give up. I can’t find it. I thought she said you should only submit scores of 700 and above.
@homerdog I would agree that anything that starts with a 7 is submit worthy for those subjects (esp. US History were its just random facts that are being asked).
@ThinkOn thx
Random facts on US History. Exactly. What the heck.
Kiddo has AP Psych on Monday afternoon, AP English Language Wednesday morning. Both tests are at the local community college. I have to get him there on Monday, but on Wednesday the bus will take him back and forth. None of this was made clear to parents when we were being told about the testing. Luckily the CC is walking distance. I may give him permission to skip the rest of his school day on Wednesday once testing ends, I’m not sure.
My D is watching a show with friends tonight. She had her end of year performance last week. I am glad that she can relax before AP exams next week.
Ugh, my daughter is in a marathon, all day, practice class for APush today. Her high school class barely cracked the 20th century. Does anyone else hate the way the AP’s force history to be taught? Global was even worse than US. It seems like just a mountain of random facts to be memorized, pulled out and quickly forgotten. I was a history major in college and I never had to do anything like this. In fact, I would have loathed history if I had been forced to learn it this way.
@gallentjill S19 is finding APUSH to be more about trends and analyzing them so he is liking it. The SAT2 history exam is a big pain though. (Aren’t you all tired of me griping about it yet?) Last night, he read me a question from the prep book and it asked who Frank Lloyd Wright is. I mean, he knows who he is and can answer the question but what does that have to do with US History? And I’m guessing no teacher covered that in any US History class. I sure hope the random questions on today’s test are ones he knows the answers to.
@gallentjill I stopped at our library last week and picked up an APUSH review book I had on hold. The clerk was college age and said that was the hardest AP she ever took, more so that AP Bio, Physics, etc and shebsaid she is a history major in college!
