Parents of the HS Class of 2019 (Part 1)

@mom2twogirls Yes and I thought we had that with University of Central Arkansas (even cheaper and a lovely purple) but all of a sudden she didn’t want to be that far away. UCM is 4 hours drive so the thought of being able to come home for a weekend once in a while is appealing. She’s still not completely sold so hopefully a visit to UCM will make her like it more. I’m sure the campus is not all completely red like their website! She is highly influenced by aesthetics so she thinks she has to like the way it looks.

It’s graduation weekend for Class of 2018 here. We’ll be going to a few receptions and getting ideas. Do kids in everyone else’s area do open houses/receptions? Some are at people’s houses or at public places you can rent. DD’17 had it at our church with a baked potato bar. DD’19 will have hers at church too and wants a taco bar.

We had a cookout and movie night in our theatre room for 25 of DS16’s friends for his graduation party. For my goddaughter, we went to Ashburn and cooked entire pig, just like we did for her mom when she graduated nursing school. DS19 has not thought about what he wants yet.

@bjscheel Love the open house/receptions and the bake potato bar is a fabulous idea! Around here (Texas) there are a lot of bbqs! We are originally from SF so my D14 went against the grain and had a small family only affair at a Japanese restaurant. Then she and her friends did the BBQ circuit. We plan to take our S19 to celebrate his graduation at the local Brazilian steakhouse. He’s a big kid,who loves meat and its his dream to eat at this all you can eat carnivore’s heaven!

@firstwavemom and @BayMom3 I hope your kids get their results today. I don’t understand why it takes the College Board so long to issue the results to a bubble test. Back when my college kids were in high school, the results were released in one batch at 5 am. I don’t understand why the College Board now has to drag the releasing of the scores out over a number of days. Maybe they should take some of their profits and use them to upgrade their computer systems.

Hugs to all the kids struggling with SAT/ACT scores. Some people just “test well” and others don’t. Yes, it’s a trainable skill, but so stressful for the kids for whom it doesn’t come easily. Keep in mind that we now know that test scores are a poor indicator of future success. Fortunately I think schools are weighting them less and less each year. I know that doesn’t help if a kid has a specific goal and they don’t have the scores for it though. So… hugs!

@shuttlebus and @BayMom3 My son is not counting on scores today. Do they even release them on the weekend? We are in Maryland but I think a few of my son’s friends have received their scores already. We did register late for the test, but I don’t think that is the reason. At least AP exams are over!

Neither of my kids want a graduation party. We’ve decided on graduation vacations. They’ve already been planning them for a couple of years.

@shuttlebus and @firstwavemom I also doubt they will release the scores over the weekend. We are also in Maryland and have also heard that many people have already received their scores. The website says “Most multiple choice scores from the May 5th SAT are now available” so that is the part that has me concerned. Oh well, I guess we will just be patient and check again on Monday.

I am behind like hundred pages, and it seems it will stay that way.
DS19’s school ends next week. He was not accepted to the High school research program at UT, so now his summer is wide open except for getting some dental work - fillings - done and visiting grandmas that involves thousands of miles of travel. I might still find a research group through personal contacts where he can shadow a graduate student for a few weeks. He will retake Chemistry SAT II in June. He took one AP exam, BC Calc this spring. He must have gotten the harder one, O version. We will see the score in July. He is working hard and keeping his grades up. Sort of last push as his transcript will be sent to the colleges before next year’s semester report becomes available.

It has been hitting 97 degrees in TX and of course, one of our A/C is down.
Not fun dealing with Home Warranty claims folks. We would have rather paid for repair ourselves and it would have been fixed already. arrgh. 2nd floor has been baking for a week. Fortunately, 1st floor A/C is up and running and master bedroom is on the 1st  We put a mattress in our living room for DS17 to sleep. DS17 has been home for a week from UT and has been sleeping mostly when I am awake. He plays videogames while we are asleep.

Son got his SAT subject tests back. He did fine, not great, not cruddy. Fairly middle of the road. I thought he would do better on the math, but maybe it just wasn’t his day. Not a deal breaker though, very few schools want to see them. They are not so bad where admissions would be concerned, but they certainly don’t help the case. I’m amazed at how many kids who take the math2 test get an 800. It is incredible.

I feel that way about so many of the stats I see reported here on CC. You start to think that everyone has at least a 35 ACT, 5s on all the AP tests and 800s on the subject tests. But this place is not a representative sample, AND I would guess that not everything reported here is factual.

@payn4ward Completely understand your pain with the AC. Our downstairs one went out a week before family was due to arrive for D14’s college graduation. We paid out of pocket and it was expensive to say the least! The repaiman said that it will need to be replaced soon, but as long as its fixable…we will keep fixing it! Kind of miss living in San Francisco where there are no AC systems!

18 Mom here. It’s funny about AC. Necessity in South Georgia, but it’s optional at my son’s Ohio college.

No SAT results for D19 either. Now, I really hope they won’t come out until Monday. She is totally fine with it, has put it aside and is so excited about prom. I want to suggest that she not check during the evening and just enjoy her friends and the fun.

@mindatwork, @firstwavemom, @BayMom3, and any other '19 parents, at least I know I’m not alone in the wait and worry!

@4MyKidz, thank you for posting. I am practicing channeling your response if D19’s scores are not what we hoped for. She is not her scores, and I know everything will work out no matter what they are!

@mathmomvt you are completely right that some students don’t test well no matter how they prepare or study.

@gallentjill you are exactly right to be questioning the validity of everything reported here.

I just got a phone call from my son that he was accepted into the Neuroscience Brain Camp at Muhlenberg College. He really wanted this and is ecstatic. So happy for him!!

Oh, wow, that sounds so cool @Kona2012 ! I can’t wait to read your review of the program.

That’s great @Kona2012 !

Hurrah, @Kona2012! I was cheering for him (and I hope he likes it as much as my D17 did a couple years ago).

Thanks everyone. @dfbdfb it was so hard to wait for the email and I knew from you about when it should arrive. I got concerned when they changed the application date from April 2 to May 4th knowing that my son got his in the middle of March. I thought what happens if they lost his! LOL! He’s really looking forward to it.
