Parents of the HS Class of 2019 (Part 1)

@homerdog Thanks for the advice. I think s19 (the number means graduation year… right?) may apply and then just see what his options are, although if he gets into his early I don’t know if he’ll bother.

@me29034 My D17 who had unweighted 3.4 did get into Elon. We dont know all the details from @cakeisgreat I dont think. it was just a thought.

Elon’s class profile shows an average ACT of 27 and a GPA of 3.98 (I assume weighted).

However: I’m a little surprised by their GPA claims—the 41 incoming freshmen in their honors program had an average 5.05 GPA?? How do you mathematically do that, even weighted?

Considering that my experience with my daughters and their friends is that a GPA of 3.98 or thereabouts is generally associated with an ACT in the 30s, I suspect they do a GPA recalculation with very generous weighting to make their stats look better, maybe like an extra point for honors courses and two for AP, or something like that. In any event, the “5.05” makes me a bit leery of taking what’s on their website at face value.

@dfbdfb Our high school is on a 5.0 scale, not a 4.0 scale, so all As unweighted would be a 5.0. Then there’s all of the weighting where kids could (theoretically) get up to a 6.0. Maybe Elon uses that kind of scale? Seems odd for a college, though, as I’ve never heard of any others using the 5.0 scale.

Safety school suggestions for S19 36 ACT, 3.9 unweighted, 4.7 weighted, IB Diploma Candidate, ton of great extracurriculars, good writer.
He likes Michigan as a safety, but is looking for 1 or 2 more.
He prefers east coast and midwest

@homerdog, if Elon uses a 5.0 scale, then their freshman class averages are an ACT of 27 and a GPA of (what everyone else would expect to be) 2.98, which seems equally off, just in the other direction.

Anyone here know how North Carolina high schools generally weight GPAs? Maybe that might give some insight.

And @skrrtbrothersjr, it also depends on what sort of subjects he’s interested in—it makes a difference if he’s a budding creative writer or a possible engineer.

@me29034 My son’s friend from class of 2017 got into Elon and he had a mix of A’s and B’s, no AP stem classes, and an Act of 28. He didn’t have a lot of ECs., played soccer and worked in a store part time, that’s it.

It also depends on your finances, what he likes in weather. You said he likes Michigan so I assume he wants large universities? Are you most interested in the Midwest?

edit - whoops, you did say Midwest, never mind

@dfbdfb NC High schools allot 4.0 for an “A”. Students are awarded additional quality points (.5 for an Honors class and 1 point for AP, IB, DE) so a 5.0 would be the highest possible. Other states give the quality points based on the numeric grade and depending on the state, the “A” scale is usually either 93-100 or 90-100. Those states often give a 4.0 to the 90 or 93 and award higher quality points for grades above. For example, in SC, a grade of 90 in a college prep class gives you a 4.0 but a grade of 100 would get you a 5.0, in an honors class a 5.5 and in AP, IB, & DE a 6.0.

I expect when Elon says its incoming honors class had an average 5.05, that is based on Elon recalculating all the GPAs based on a standard scale they choose to apply to account for the differing scales of all the states.

@me29034 I agree with you .

@mom2twogirls I went to Misercordia for grad school back in the late 80s . They had a good reputation for health professions .

I just checked out our Naviance for Elon. Kids getting in with 3.2 unweighted GPAs. The lowest ACT with that GPA was a 26. Majority of kids over 3.3 and a 27 got in. I could quote weighted GPA numbers but weighting is so different at every school so it may not mean much.

@homerdog. Your data backs up my case that my kid with 3.2 gpa, 1220 SAT (25 ACT equivalent) would likely not get in. On our school’s Naviance, he is in the rejection zone for Elon.

How do you calculate a weighted GPA from a percentage based grade? Our district, not sure about any others in Texas, has multipliers for Pre-AP at 1.15 and AP classes at 1.29. So I did all the math @-) and came up with a huge number, which I divided by 7 (total number of classes) then I’m still left with a big number. I saw a way to calculate it several months ago, and forgot what that was. I spent a while looking online yesterday but didn’t find it. TIA!

@jellybean5, unless there’s reason to break it down otherwise, I’d start by assuming the usual percentage-to-letter conversions: 90% and up is an A, below that but equal or greater than 80% is a B, below that but equal or greater than 70% is C, below that but equal or greater than 60% is D, and below 60% is F.

Then it’s a normal A=4 to F=0 calculation.

I looked at our school’s Naviance and see the average (for our school’s students) for Elon is

1320 SAT
92. Something weighted GPA

If that helps @me29034

@carolinamom2boys it sounds like one of those hidden gem type schools there for just the right students.

Hi everybody! We just got back from an amazing trip to the Tetons & Yellowstone. We had no cell service so I am WAY behind here on CC - will try to slowly catch up over the weekend. It was nice to have almost 8 straight days without talking about colleges, but now we are back and it is time to get going again!

Thanks everyone! We have Elon on our list for the tour…there’s a person on here with an Elon icon who mentioned great stuff and the discussion here solidifies it.

Putting Flagler and Miscordia on the research list…thank you @carolinamom2boys and @mom2twogirls

@ninakatarina We are open to any state in the south… Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia seem to be where we’ve found colleges so far but open any other state.

@cakeisgreat we are touring Flagler in July . I can give you more details when we return .
