@gallentjill I hear you on no info session for QU. I did not like that they did not offer one at another school we toured. I like to hear about stats, accomplishments, and pride from the info session. D14 was a tour guide for 4 years at QU and can give you lots of great info if you ever want any b4/after the open house. She’s fun to take on tours with the other kiddos. I always ask her what she thought and what she would say different.
@wisteria thanks for mentioning re CoC – that is definitely something we will consider – how easy is it to get off campus housing. As long as it’s not too hard, it’ll be a contender, especially if S19 gets honors. @carolinamom2boys – good to see you’re your DS16 has been able to stay on campus as he wanted.
@carolinamom2boys – thank you very much for that info! I don’t think the guide mentioned the Emergency Squad. Very cool because S19 is actually looking into how to get on the EMT thing in the township. Will also head over to FB to like the stuff. S19 is at the low end of honors acceptance so maybe/maybe not. We shall see!
@swimmingdad – that’s what I’m thinking re: housing – as long as it’s not too hard to get housing, especially being OOS so far away, I’m good.
@cakeisgreat good luck to your son for Honors . It really is more holistic for Honors, not just stats driven. Off campus housing is available in Charleston, but very expensive , right now between 900 and 1200 a month. And just another aside. Your son may be interested to know that Bill Murray owns a farm team , the Charleston Riverdogs, in downtown Charleston. Students can ride the Carta for free to the stadium and anywhere the bus goes .
@carolinamom2boys I’m glad to hear that your S has been able to stay on campus. I’ve been seeing the sublet prices on the parent listserv and prices are high! D18 will be staying on campus unless she finds a summer job or takes classes before senior year.
Lol, @peachActuary73 . Lately, I can say the same about my very-predictable-D-until-the-last-few-weeks. This is happening while we are together under one roof. I don’t even want to think about the time she will come back during the college vacations
I’m trying to focus on accepting that the college list will evolve, that visits may have to be done at the end, and that S will not get essays done when I want them done but it will happen. And he typically does a great job with most things. I’m also trying to just enjoy the little things, like taking him to trivia nights and watching sports together. We’ve also had some games of kitchen soccer lately, and he’s made me see see how many times we can head a ball back and forth (one of those grocery store balls)
. I’m really looking forward to his last water polo season, even though it will be sad for me. What are you all looking forward to for your kids’ senior years?
@elena13 I’m looking forward to the musical! It’s supposed to be Cinderella and there is an extremely high chance DD will be Cinderella. She’s excited about doing one with a fairy tale theme. Looking forward to a lighter class load and just overall to see what develops over the year! She does soccer in the spring but I’m not super excited- I worry about her getting hurt for one thing.
Well, we got the first acceptance package! Arcadia rolling admissions. We thought it was just more marketing stuff so I didn’t film it or anything.
Nice merit award too.
Safety is in the bag!
yay! @ninakatarina
Hopefully the first of many. It’s nice to start reading about actual acceptances on this long thread.
Hi Parents! Any words of wisdom for us Parents of the Class of 2020 as you are one year ahead of us in the process? For example, how did you handle letters of recommendation and was it a smooth process, happy with your kids EC’s, etc.?
@ninakatarina Congratulations!!
@ninakatarina Congrats!
D19 got an acceptance from Kansas today.
@SoCalDad22 I suggest looking on the Common Data Set for the schools that your child may be interested in to see how they weigh parts of the application and if it is necessary to show interest. I also recommend beginning to follow the schools on social media and lastly make contact with the admissions counselor for your area. Good luck. Also , start testing if you haven’t already done so to leave time for retakes. Good luck.
@socaldad2002 kids don’t usually ask for recommendations until spring. That being said, I gave S19 a pep talk before school started and told him he needs two of these teachers to write him recs. He’s always been a very engaged student, but it was important that he keep it up junior year. As for ECs, he sought out leadership where he could. He didn’t start anything new but gave each of his ECs his all. He did go the extra mile with his art and entered some contests. And, when his English teacher told the kids he was entering stories into a state wide contest, S19 spent some good time writing so that the teacher would enter his pieces.
And testing early is a good idea. Have your child take a practice ACT and SAT at a local Kaplan center or tutoring place. They’ll let you do it for free and it will help your child decide which is the best test for him. Then study for that test and only take that one. Always study before taking real tests.
Congtrats to kids in this thread with acceptances already, wow! Hooray!
That must bring some relief and is a good way to kick off the application season.
So excited for all of the kiddos with acceptances in already! Great way to go into senior year!!!
Yes! Congratulations on all acceptances!
Mark my word. S19 will be one of the last ones here to get decisions and will be flipping a coin come April 30th. 8-|
As this is an anonymous forum, I can repeat a scrap of dialogue I overheard. “Hah! I’m already accepted to college and y’all bitches haven’t even opened up the common app yet”
Congrats, @DCNatFan ! I didn’t think it would make that big a difference, but it does.
