Senior year schedule has been a problem because certain classes are only offered at certain times, usually in the morning to allow for early dismissals. Many seniors only need 2-3 classes to graduate.
That sucks.
S17âs (and his alphabet groupâs) counselor changed every year whereas other alphabetical groups stayed with the same counselors. One left, they hired more counselors, etc etc. His last counselor shortchanged his award too.
S17 did student aid/tutoring for his open block. He helped at the front office and tutored science/math in the library.
@payn4ward weâre hoping that we can work out something like that, but he has 2 open periods unfortunately. We prefer not to do early dismissal because we want his rigor to stay up and heâs heavily involved with after school ECs.
@carolinamom2boys thatâs very frustrating. Our schedules donât come out for about 3 more weeks. I did get a peek at S17âs but it came down so itâs very likely not at all final. In the version I saw he did not get the PE he wanted and has a different teacher each semester for Calc BC which seems super odd. So who knows.
@eandesmom I had to sign off on his proposed schedule, but he didnât get any of his electives or alternates .
Thatâs awful @carolinamom2boys I canât imagine not getting anything he asked for. I hope you can work it out.
Our school doesnât give out schedules until about 2 days before classes start so we donât find out if there is a problem until right before school starts, except for APs where you know ahead of time because there is summer work. Both my kids have been lucky with electives, but not lucky with APs. Our school claims to have lots of APs but only has one section of many ( most? all?). Both of my kids have had issues. Older D had to choose between AP Psych and AP Gov cause there was one section of each and they were offered at the same time. S19 was waitlisted for AP World History because too many kids were trying to take the class so he ended up in honors instead.
Weâve received big fat catalogs from UChicago, Dartmouth, Williams, BC, and Yale among others. They all say how affordable their school is for everyone (except for those that wonât get financial aid like us, but canât afford anywhere close to $70k a year) I think we get targeted for their mailers because our kids are in the testing range of their admitted students, and because theyâll get their money back on their advertising when we pay the application fee.
@me29034 our school only has 1 or 2 sections of each AP class too. Itâs frustrating because he really wants to stay in school all day.
@PepperJo DS16 received this mailers too and his scores were in the low range of test scores. They do it to increase selectivity. More apps equal more rejections and greater selectivity.
We are still holding at almost zero mail outside of colleges S17 actively expressed interest in. Apparently he did a very good job of checking (or unchecking) the âcolleges can contact meâ box.
Itâs been nice.
@carolinamom2boys - Sorry that stinks. With all the other things to worry about for senior year, Iâm sure thatâs the last thing you want to have to think about. I think S has always gotten the classes he wanted/needed but he also never got to take any interesting elective. Since our school is pushy with APs I guess they offer enough so that they can get more kids in to all the ones they are willing to take. S does have to take Health/PE this year, but the rest are all classes to complete the IB diploma so not any fun choices.
I liked his counselor that he had for the first three years (same for my D17) but she changed schools for this year so he will have a new one and Iâm worried about it.
@carolinamom2boys I feel your pain. D was almost in tears when she got her schedule. They messed everything up. They signed her up for Health, which she already took and passed in 9th grade. Gave her the wrong econ, the wrong math, no physics at all and no philosophy (her intended college major). They wonât even start making corrections until late August so she gets so stew about it for a few weeks along with everything else. grrrrrrr
@gallentjill Iâm so sorry for your daughter. Our school starts Aug 20th.He was placed in all of his Honors and AP classes, just no electives. I wouldnât want that job for anything .
Iâm sorry @carolinamom2boys and @gallentjill .
Twice in 4 years my d had had scheduling problems. I think that considering how full her schedule always is, thatâs pretty good. Going into 10th, she wanted a computer class that was full since older kids got priority. They promised her that she would get it ahead of anyone else the next year though. She waited until this coming year to take it anyway.
The only other issue was for this year. It turned out she just had to take a semester of an English elective that wasnât preferred but allowed her to keep everything else. Hearing your stories makes me grateful her schoolâs counselors fix issues as they come up, rather than making everyone stressed about it all.
@mom2twogirls DS19 hasnât had the greatest of luck with teachers , but heâs always been able to get his classes.
My daughterâs stats are in the admitted student 75th percentile for most of these schools. Gets her mind thinking she has a decent chance, which is a little heartbreaking when athletes from her school with 17 and 20 ACTs , and 2.7s are getting into schools she most likely wonât. Thatâs a whole different topic though.
@eandesmom We are almost at zero mailings as wellâŠexcept for the handful of schools we visited.
My daughter has her schedule now. Itâs complicated by her taking DE classes at the local open-admissions college, but it looks to be:
[ul][]Band (year-long)
[]DE precalc (1st semester)
[]DE calc I (2nd semester)
[]DE Comp 2 (1st semester)
[]DE something, maybe American government? (2nd semester)
[]AP physics (year-long)
[li]Student government (required year-long ÂŒ-credit class)[/ul][/li]If she takes American government as an online high-school class, sheâll take something else DE 2nd semester, maybe a psych class or somesuch.
So this looks doable. Intense, certainly (especially since precalc is a 5-college-credit class, rather than the usual 3), but definitely doable.
Hello! I was out of town (Los Angeles) for 5 days, and am catching up. Actually I had the L.A. niece here the week before that, and we flew back w/ her, so it was more like almost two weeks of trying to catch up.
D19 got an email from an ASU AO for our area. She is also from Texas. I guess thatâs why sheâs the AO. I decided to look at merit scholarships for OOS for ASU, and was surprised to see that there is a Provost Scholarship that might get her $14,500 based on her stats, and she may be able to get into the honors college, if she tried. I thought someone here was in Arizona, anybody have any insight on this? I have a cousin and a good friend who live in the Phoenix area, and we did actually go see ASU when we were there a few summers ago. Yes itâs hot there, but itâs hot here too. Any info would be appreciated, thanks!
@jellybean5 I believe that @Corinthian may be from Arizona.
