@gallentjill I’ve sent SAT scores. I think it’s fine. Lots of kids send their scores automatically when they take the tests to take advantage of the free test sends, so schools get a lot of ACT and SAT scores way before apps.
Anyone have any first hand info about Lafayette? S19 is applying but we have not visited. He just met with the rep at school. Only he and one other student showed up so he got some good time with him. He learned about this engineering studies major and he’s a bit interested. It’s the only program like it as far as I can tell. It doesn’t result in accreditation but kids take lots of math, science, and engineering classes as well as classes in the social sciences. Leaves room to study other interests so the kids aren’t only taking math/science/engineering.
D17 and I visited Lafayette and really liked it. We had to visit in the summer so I’m sure we would have liked it more had we been able to see it when more students were there. The atmosphere was friendly and fun and it seemed to be in a good location with access to Philly and NY. We liked the size and the sense of community. D also did an interview at an area hotel when her rep came to town.
@gallentjill We haven’t had any problem at all with the ACT scores sent prior to submitting the Common App. All the scores have eventually linked up with my DD’s application.
She sent her December 2017 and July 2018 scores to 4 schools that don’t use (or at least its use is optional) the Common App and all 4 received before the apps were submitted.
We had no problem with DD16 either. Somehow, the magic of applications made it so the ACT scores connected with the applications that were submitted much later.
We are trudging along for common app. Have activities filled out and essay is finally done. probably needs a final proof reading. I am not allowed to see it. Now have two smaller additional essays to get done, and we should be able to hit send to 2 schools. One will likely be ED. Its only Sept and i want this process to be done. We did the brag sheet for the GC a few weeks ago and kiddo filled out his portion online.(thank goodness since noone can read his handwriting). My biggest gripe this week, is that he messed up the homework for Calc BC and basically now has a 0 on a homework quiz. In all of his HS years, he has never come close to getting a C or failing a class. Yikes!
We ordered a couple SAT scores on Saturday (9/8) and just received an e-mail from one school saying they received them. They also stated they will hold and match with the application once submitted.
A few weeks ago at bedtime, S19 wandered downstairs and handed me a piece of paper. Being early in the school year I just asked if I needed to sign it. 'Nope. Read it." The kid got into his first choice - our in state engineering school. I never even saw the application.
This acceptance has taken a lot of the stress out of this period. Very few of his friends are working on expensive or high caliber schools (lottery shots). We have a 2 year free community college option, and several have already gone that route too.
He has asked me for help on the Common App, so we’ve worked through that together. He has an essay and I really cranked on it over Labor Day to take the idea and build a better story arc. We agreed to let it all sit a week before we do a final edit. He’s planning to apply to two schools with the Common App.
He also applied to Univ of AL and I never saw their app either.
So it is quite fascinating to see this young man making rational adult decisions. I feel time is so fleeting and that senior year is just flying by. I won’t have any regrets when he departs, but I will miss his old soul calming presence something awful.
72 hours into waiting and it is going great. If by great, you mean checking each application account obsessively to see if test scores and recommendations have been received yet.
@InfiniteWaves just wait until your kid gets deferred and you get the pleasure of waiting all the way until April for a decision one way or the other, so FUN!!! **
**note: not wishing deferral on anyone’s child, just adding some comical relief based on my own personal misery and suffering
@RightCoaster or wait until your kid gets deferred and you get the pleasure of waiting all the way until April for her to be waitlisted and finally get accepted July 4th weekend!
Adding more comical relief based on real life experience.
For those using the SRAR, is it only final for each school submission. So if I hit submit on application A, will I be able to edit it it for non-submitted application B if I have additional grade information?
Also, if your transcript shows the number grade and the letter grade, should you enter the more granular number grade?
I’ve advised both my D17 and D19 that if a college waitlists you, just take it as a rejection and move on. Love the college that wants you, not the one that strings you along.
We’re visiting Lafayette next month so I’ll have a better answer for that question, albeit probably a month too late to help! S19 already submitted his application but we will be in the area for an audition at Muhlenberg and decided to stay an extra day to visit a couple of the other schools he applied to in eastern PA.
He still doesn’t have a safety on his list. I’m starting to worry that he’s never going to come up with one that he’ll be happy to attend.
@mindatwork S19 wouldn’t apply to Lafayette until Dec so I’ll happiky take feedback from your trip! He met with the rep at school yesterday and got a lovely email from him this morning saying thanks for his time.
I’ve got my fingers crossed that he just gets rejected vs waitlisted at dream school (if not admitted, but that’s a ridiculous long shot). I hate uncertainty, and you have to tell outside scholarships where to make the checks out to by a certain date, etc, etc… Like @dfbdfb, I’ve also told S19 that if he’s waitlisted at his dream school, it’s a reject. Especially since they admitted all of ZERO kids from the waitlist last year per their online admit data.
@homerdog We visited Lafayette last year for an open house so we were able to meet many students and attend a couple of panals… Both of us thought it was beautiful – one of the most beautiful we visited. Everyone was incredibly friendly and welcoming. We really wanted to love it because on paper, it ticked all the right boxes. However, it was really the wrong place for my daughter. It felt very much a “sports” and “fraternity” place. Everyone we met had sports and/or fraternity as the basis of their social lives. There were no “theater” kids. No “nerdy” kids. I’m sure they exist, but we met many students and my daughter felt like there was no one like her there. We came away with the feeling that it was a truly wonderful school for a different kind of kid.
My D has the option of taking a SUPA course this year (Syracuse University Project Advance) wherein she would earn college credit that’s transferable. What’s the best way to confirm with her colleges of interest if they’ll accept these credits? I tried poking around their websites but it’s not that simple. Also, how do you find out what AP score is acceptable for credit earned?
I went to our schools college planning meeting this morning, and as I thought it was pretty much a waste of my time. I did learn 1 tidbit though.
I wa amazed how many parents were still completely clueless and the EA deadlines are approaching soon.
