Parents of the HS Class of 2019 (Part 1)

My D will have the last AP exam tomorrow.
UCB, her college has the last final exam this Friday.
We have to wait 4 more weeks for HS graduation. Too long.

CofC colors are Maroon and gray

CofC: S19 looks so handsome in the CofC maroon color which was a surprise due to his bright red hair Ha!

Checking back in, I’ve been bogged down by ā€œMayā€. We still have three weeks + until school is out on 6/6, which I am sort of glad about since I’m not ready yet! Graduation is the next day. And I’m still trying to finalize my Italy plans, we leave a few days after graduation. Oh yeah and we are co-hosting a graduation party the day after graduation, and I have been doing a lot of work in regard to that. Since I am the ā€œcreativeā€ one, I got ambitious and offered to paint a cute 4’-8’ x 2 plywood backdrop for the party. Probably not a great idea, but now I have to do it since I’m halfway finished with it.

I did get D’s Shutterfly announcements made and sent out, and received many compliments on it and the pictures. So that was a small win for me!
D’s last AP exam of her HS career was today, so that was another ā€œlastā€ checked off the list. Her elementary school and all of the feeder schools for her HS have these ā€œsenior walksā€ where everybody who graduated from there goes back to visit one morning coming up. I think it’s a cute idea, my D isn’t so thrilled, but she’s going. There are still quite a few teachers from way back when who still teach at that elementary school even though quite a few new elementary schools opened up in the area and a lot of teachers moved to them.

D’s HS color is hunter green. They purchased caps and gowns, no rentals. Which stinks because my younger daughter goes to a magnet HS school with different school colors. Oh well. D’s college colors are maroon and gold. It kind of clashes with my pink/purple wheelhouse, but that’s okay.

My girls gave me a lot of middle school and HS t-shirts that they are done with, and I couldn’t just give them to Goodwill. I gave them to a younger girl in the neighborhood who will hopefully enjoy them a bit. I’m trying to get rid of stuff, but somehow my house looks like a warehouse anyway.

I’ve been thinking about doing a t-shirt quilt with all the shirts kiddo abandons after high school. My sewing skills aren’t that brilliant, but it’s something to work on once the kiddo goes away, right?

@ninakatarina a friend of mine showed me a picture of the t-shirt quilt that she had made. It cost almost $300. Yikes! I can sew too, but I don’t think I could do a good job of a quilt like that. After that I was thinking of making a photo collage of the t-shirts instead. My D is not as sentimental as I am. Most of the t-shirts she wants to get rid of that I have fond memories of whatever event it’s connected to, I keep but she couldn’t care less. And I have a stack of t-shirts that I got as hand me downs. If it’s halfway decent, and I can wear it as something around the house, so be it.

My kids sleep in any T-shirt they’ve ever gotten for anything ever. There’s still a T-shirt in rotation from a dance class they took in preschool (had to buy a much too large size at the time because they were sold out of the itty bitties).

I know some people who have used Project Repat (.com) to make quilts and were very happy with the results. Not sure on price, but I don’t think they cost $300. Thinking of doing this for D19 as well.

We used project Repat for D17 and were very pleased with the results.

Neither of my kids ended up with a lot of T-shirts in HS. They both had the obligatory "XYZSchool Nationā€ shirt in school colors which they would wear on occasion. Other than that, not much. They have more of things such as school sports specific active wear like windbreakers, first layer, sweatshirts etc. with their name and number on it.

Never heard of Project Repeat. I’ve been collecting D’s old T-shirts that have sentimental value for a while. I sew, but decided quilting would have to wait until I had much more time and patience. It’s less forgiving than home dec and costumes. My summer plan is to digitize the school logo and mascot for a couple of dorm pillow shams (like she’ll be making her bed). Maybe in the fall, I’ll finally attempt the quilt.

D’s been muddling through a really bad cold and sinus infection since exams started last week. Fortunately, most days she’s only needed to be in school for a half day or so. And this too shall pass.

School colors - so disappointed in blue and white. My HS was blue and white, D’s HS is blue and white. From that perspective, I was sad about the red and white school, the orange schools, and the black and gold school.

@parent2one @momzilla2D Discrete Math, Differential equations, Number Theory in that order. It’s been so hard to mind my own business as D’s been looking through the course options.

Thanks for mentioning Project Repat. Putting together the shirts for an order now. They look like a good company.

I wish I had heard of Project Repat 24 hrs ago - I just had several bags of clothing picked up by Purple Heart yesterday! Gone are most of S19’s old t-shirts. I just looked at their website-what a great idea.

MIL saved dh’s T-shirts with plans to make a quilt. She still had them 8 years ago when she moved out of dh’s childhood home. She never had the quilt made but gave Dh three of his old childhood t-shirts that now sit in his closet and donated the rest. I thought it was a great idea when I first heard mention of it years and years ago. I wish I’d saved some of my kids’ t-shirts-I would have if I’d realized I could send them off and had a quilt made for me. What a cherished graduation gift that would’ve been.

My DH had a t-shirt quilt made for S23 - I think he used the Repat but may have just used someone he found on Easy not sure. I didn’t think S would like it but he actually loves it. S23 had the most t-shorts by far because he has played many more sports than my Ds. I liked that you didn’t have to just use t-shirts - @RightCoaster this lady was able to use pinneys, uniforms and sweatshirts too.

@peachActuary73 cute about the pillow shams!
I have been collecting senior letters for S19 to drop off at the school today (from D17, my dad, sister, his godmother). The kids will read them next week during graduation practice. I finally had to write mine this morning. Waaah! Tears are flowing.

Do you guys have to pay for tassels and cords? Ours are costing $12-14 per pop and I’ve gotten forms to order 4 of them so far. I have to think that this is terrible for low income families - they want to recognize their kid’s achievements, but if you’re in a bunch of honor societies it starts to add up.

@ninakatarina – we paid $8.50 for two honors cords for theatre – one for ITS and one for the state championship cord. So $4.25 each. (We’re at a large public high school if that matters at all.)

No tassels and cords, but long, formal white dresses for the girls and tuxes for the boys. D19’s dress was expensive, it’s difficult to find relatively conservative, of high quality fabric (not see thru), long white dresses.

We had to pay for some cords. I think D got the AICE and STEM cords for free. We paid $20 for NHS stole, $10 for English Honor Society, $8 for a club cord - that’s all I can remember right now. Found out yesterday they are not allowed to wear the club cords on stage, only academic cords. I was thinking the same thing about kids paying for cords, would be better if they just gave them out and had you return them at the end.

D also had graduation practice this week - they gave the kids so many rules! No sneakers, no decorating caps, no throwing caps, no ā€œmovementsā€ on stage (like pumping your fist or something), no looking at the audience at all (they were told to not even turn their heads to glance at the audience or this would make everything slow down because parents would want to take pictures.) I know it’s a big school and they are trying to get through this quickly but come on, you can’t even turn your head and smile?!

D gets to sit in one of the front rows because she is top 10%, I don’t think we do Cum Laude type distinctions and everyone wears the same navy cap & gown. D tried it on yesterday and hates it because its so big and it has shoulder pads. I told her since they will only let you rent them they are probably form the 80’s!
