Wow, it’s been a long time since I graduated. Never perceived the covered area being particularly dangerous. It was bit dodgy around People’s Park down to Telegraph but you just put up the radar. UCB was a lot safer in the periphery vs the urban college I graduated from.
hey tamagotchi – have a question for you; your profile is hidden so can’t PM. If you’re up for a question related to the area – can you PM me? thanks!!
You can PM anyone, even those with hidden profiles. Go to your messages area (envelope icon in the menu of choices when you click your avatar). Click the down arrow if you have a long list of PMs, and you will see the full messages menu where you can click on the blue “new message” box on the right. Choose who to send it to by typing @ followed by their handle. Type your subject and message and send.
Considering how many of the parents live in gated communities, that’s not a totally unreasonable assumption…
Not enough airspace for all of the helicopters with parents in them?
NYT has article referencing SafeBears - Gift link U.C. Berkeley Parents Hired Private Security to Patrol Near Campus
Here’s a report from Berkeley Scanner mentioning a private security guard involved in the pilot program: Safety ambassador intervenes in attack near UC Berkeley
Edited to add:
I believe this is the only incident in which one of the hired security guards intervened. It 's possible that the presence of the security guards themselves might have discouraged crime. I do not know if crimes reported in the area were significantly different during the pilot period.
Also in the general vicinity of the SafeBears project, note that there are 24h security guards at all four corners of the newly enclosed People’s Park (this is unrelated to SafeBears). My son (who lives in Unit 2 Ehrman) commented to me that “now it’s probably the safest neighborhood in Berkeley” (referring to the immediate vicinity of People’s Park), due to these guards being posted 24h.
Will pilot program be extended? Or what are next steps from either UC Berkeley or the city?
These are questions I don’t have an answer for, sorry.
