Parents, when should I start concerning myself with credit?

bookworm,

Yes, they are settled in their career jobs and in this area. S1 is engaged to his gf of 6 years. They are buying a 1900 5 bedroom house, huge barn and 4 acres. I think the maintenance/fixing up will be more time-consuming than they are thinking  His 2nd job/passion is livestock, which takes time and money.

S2 is buying an older, well-maintained house with 2 acres and 2 outbuildings. The interior is very 1980’s, but he doesn’t care. He bought a house on land contract from me when he was 19, so he is used to house payment, etc. He is very adverse to paying rent rather than building equity.

They are each putting 10% down-their funds. Agree that’s usually the problem for young people. Bank said they could do as little as 5%, which surprised me, given the bank credit crack-down of the last few years. Gee, back in the dark ages I had to put 20% down on a loan of $20,000! I bought my first house at 22.

Housing is cheap here–they paid $120 and $105. Sorry too much OT–I don’t think it’s ever to young to teach and care about credit.
