Parking ticket has a typo in license plate number; do you pay?

This same thing happened to my husband in the same city. Right car got the parking ticket, but they put the wrong tag number on the ticket. It was a bigger fine though so it must have been some kind of special space for diplomats or something. Any way, I went to the traffic office and waited in line and spoke directly to the person in charge of hearing your arguments about why this ticket is unfair. It was like going to traffic court. They said that since I did not own a car with the license plate on the ticket we were not responsible for the fine and threw it out. It took at least 4 hours of waiting in line but good luck getting anyone in the DC government to pick up the phone and answer your questions. Plus fines double after 2 weeks so do not delay.

This is kind of like a court case where there is an unreliable witness and the everyone agrees to drop the case.

“would have never read it that way, but obviously these 5 people did; that said, we sent it out to about 400 people and the others didn’t have a problem”

More likely 100 people DID have a problem, and didn’t contact you about it.

^^ “This is kind of like a court case where there is an unreliable witness and the everyone agrees to drop the case.”

Actually I was thinking it was more like an airline mis-entering your middle initial in their reservation system, with the (inadvertent) result being a name on the no-fly list.

mini- actually, we had to receive a response from each person and the remaining responses were done correctly. That says to me the other people all understood what was needed. It doesn’t matter, my point to Garland was that people sometimes read things differently and she didn’t need to apologize for reading something into my post that I had not meant to convey.

This is an opportunity to do the right thing.

Off topic, but $10 for a parking ticket seems a bargain. DD got one recently for overstaying a meter by 10 minutes and was slapped with a $50 fine. She was working a minimum wage job and it cost her a full day’s pay.

Doing the right thing means going to the ticket office or calling the ticket office and reporting that the ticket left on the car does not have the correct tag number. The ticket office must then follow policy to correct the error. Likely this results in the ticket being voided. You can’t pay a fine if the agency has to void the ticket. There is either a law or precedence for this issue.

DO NOT PAY THE FINE ONLINE and have the credit card then linked to the other tickets that DO belong to this tag.

Looks like one can dispute a ticket by mail or by going into traffic court as a standby; guess which one of those my daughter will not do! She does not want to stand in line at traffic court and miss a day of work. An email has been sent to one of the commissioners for her area to see if they can give her a name, phone number or email address of someone that will be able to help. Maybe this can be resolved this week.

My daughter did mention that the ticket said something about the car being towed, which makes me think the tag owner listed on the ticket has had more tickets than DC is happy with. I am wondering if the mention of the tow was a threat or if when the tow truck came, they didn’t see a car matching the description of this person’s car. I hope his/her car hasn’t since been towed due to this ticket, although my daughter just found it Friday night, a week after it was issued. She rarely uses her car during the week which is why she didn’t see it earlier.

There is no way she would pay this online as I also was worried about her credit car being attached to the other person. If this can not be straighten out, although I think with some work it will, the ticket will be paid with a money order through the mail.

A charge turned up on our Visa bill once that I could not figure out. Called the bank and they checked — turned out it was a toll bridge in Paris.

I said, I’m glad the car was having a nice time in Paris; I would like to have gone as well! They removed it.

No word from the area commissioner yet, but we did find information on the DMV website that states:
You have the option to contest your parking ticket by mail or in person. DMV Adjudication Services recommends that you skip the trip and use mail adjudication. Evidence, such as pictures, police reports, etc, may be necessary to prove your defense.

The ticket is defective. Examples of defects include, but are not limited to:

* The wrong vehicle make is listed on the ticket. Your vehicle is a Honda, but the
make is noted as Hyundai on the ticket. Provide a copy of your vehicle
registration as evidence for adjudication.

  • The incorrect tag number due to mis-keying. Your tag number is MD OQM123
and the tag number on the ticket is MD OOM123. Provide a copy of your vehicle
    registration as evidence for adjudication.
  • The time is missing. The time does not include AM or PM unless time is noted on a
24 hour cycle or what is usually termed as military time.
  • The officer’s name or badge number is missing.
  • The ticket violation date is missing.

My daughter will be taking care of this tomorrow!

I was about to say that if there is an error on the ticket, it would likely be thrown out in m, but I see you already found it. A lucky mistake for your daughter.
