The problem with seasonal jobs on Martha’s Vineyard or Nantucket (don’t know about Mackinac Island) is housing. If the employer is providing housing, and many businesses have started buying up properties for their employees during the season, then you are fine. If not, it’s tough.
I peeked at the Mackinac Island Facebook summer jobs page and most employers do seem to be offering housing, likely in dormitory style housing. They couldn’t get employees without it, I imagine.
Yes that’s true for Mackinac Island. One of my kids worked for a summer at Cedar Point and that was the case there also.
Before the pandemic, both places had many foreign workers, it was a problem when the country and economy opened. I’m not sure what the situation is now.
Do these resort summer places have over 55 lodging for over 55 employees🤣
And do they allow cats? I couldn’t get H to move without his pets. But otherwise I think it sounds great. It’d be fun
Lol, that’s what I was thinking - I don’t know if dormitory living on an island is what the OP was looking for!!!
With a bunch of college students!
But maybe we are onto something. Some places might be looking for more experienced and “mature” summer staff. Give the right lodging and some folks might be all in!
All lower bunks!
Did anyone mention election clerk? Pay is not great and the hours are long, but it’s a very important job to do for our democracy.
A good friend does this and loves it.
We’ve occasionally seen the daughter of a friend of ours doing the election day thing. I think she was between jobs or waiting to attend law school. She liked seeing everyone come in. You just sit there, looking up addresses and handing out pens and ballots.
My mother used to do the board of election gig. It is a very long day (they have to stay after to close up and count the ballots).
I am planning on building a second career as a fiction writer. I am about ten years away from retirement from my current career. Right now, I am writing short stories and joined a writers workshop at my local library. After I have built up a base of stories that I am happy with, I’ll submit some to writing competitions and fiction journals. If I have some success with that and after I learn more about publishing and the business in general, I will probably move on to novels. I do not expect much financial reward for these efforts. At a minimum, I expect writing will give me a stimulating activity with goals to chase.
School crossing guard
I would love to do this. Are there any sites you recommend to get started?
Thanks!
I’m a moderator and poll worker in my town. Where I am, the pay is fine. But remember, this happens only when there are…things to vote on. You don’t get paid year round.
I just worked early voting AND the (long…5:15 am to 9 pm) primary, and earned enough money to pay for airline tickets to see my son. That works!
The work days are long…but the only one who MUST work the full day is the moderator. We have a lot of folks who do 1/2 days.
It’s something that is important, and there is a shortage of poll workers.
I actually enjoy this periodic work!
Retired teachers can tutor.
One of my friends is one of the supervisors of ushers (volunteers) at the local performing arts center. She loves it.
@taverngirl I’d also be interested if you had any tips for copy editing part time…? Wasn’t sure if you had to have been in the field to land a part-time gig?
A friend delivered flowers - everyone was happy to see her! She got great tips.
Another friend is a substitute teacher. She was a college professor for many years, but had been a middle school math and science teacher before that. The students are impressed to have Dr. ______ as a sub.
Same or more here. Every district has signs up.
Another option is to be the aid for the sp. ed. buses, or the driver with an aid.
