Wow, that’s really pretty cool - you’re a person of many practical talents! I hope you were compensated at a rate you were pleased with.
How do you determine if Craigslist postings are legitimate? I’m not interested in the ad for jello wrestlers and shot girls, but there are other, more appropriate listings … just not sure about Craigslist.
I ended up getting a job at Mathnasium helping kids with Math. There is also a website called samplersinc where you can pass out different samples at walmarts and such.
I did SAT tutoring when I was transitioning from SAHM back to full-time work. It was kind of enjoyable although I honestly preferred research/writing vs. directly working with kids, lol. Some people love that though!!
Just met someone who is doing “Day-of” wedding coordination in retirement and she LOVES it! She sent off emails to a few local venues and catering companies with a one page “Event Planning” summary of her experience (family reunions, nieces bridal showers, running her own kids weddings and engagement parties) and she now gets frequent calls to be the “Day of” planner.
So she isn’t doing the actual event (all the vendors have been hired and contracted by the time she gets involved). But she works on the minute by minute schedule, does the follow up to make sure the florist remembers that the groom is allergic to sunflowers, the caterer remembers there are 5 gluten free meals and 8 vegan entrees; is the person who brings the iron, extra hairspray, bobby pins, sewing kit to the room where the bridesmaids are getting ready; runs interference when something goes sideways during pictures, ceremony, reception.
She is either paid by the venue (she is a line-item on their bill-- “Wedding coordinator”) or by the family (gets a deposit upfront and the rest on the day). She is MUCH cheaper than hiring a full on wedding planner so it’s a great solution for people who don’t need the entire “I’ll look at your vision board and then book you all your vendors plus send out your invitations in fancy calligraphy” service- but don’t want a family member spending the day of the wedding running around with a clipboard yelling at people.
She’s got the right personality- unflappable, good with detail, a seemingly endless supply of wrinkle-free/age appropriate cocktail dresses with cute flat shoes to match!
Professional Video Game Patsy
This involves going to a teenager’s (or young adult’s) home and letting them beat you at video games for $20/hr.
I look under gigs and avoid anything with emojis or that is posted multiple times. I’ve found things in NJ, UT and CA as I’ve moved around.
Dog walking and pet sitting are great for part time work. I did it for years.
Not found on a website, but through a friend: I helped at a wedding bridal show, at the ticket booth. So much fun. Everyone coming to that event was in such wonderful spirits! ![]()
I am absolutely qualified for this position!
Short term temporary jobs are what I’d really like to do but I consider Craigslist to be so sketchy in our area I’m afraid to believe anything I see there. I did apply to help with a local agritourism farm’s Fall Festival and hope I’ll hear about that eventually. It was on their website. I’ve seen people doing inventories in stores in January and thought that would be good temporary work. Does anyone know how they hire for that? My dog would never forgive me if I came home smelling like other dogs so that’s out.
I’m not there yet, but our local university is always hiring event workers.
I worked for a department store in HS (cashier) and we got extra hours to do inventory twice a year (I think it was twice a year). I don’t remember if our regular managers oversaw us or if they hired any one temp for that (or to do inventory with us) but I don’t think so. Of course things could have changed since I was in high school ![]()
I have some friends who did inventory one year at SurLaTable. One of them knew the manager. I think they also got a discount.
I am at the point I value my time and I wouldn’t want to give it up for something that doesn’t pay much unless I needed the money.
I have several friends who do pet care. Both day sitting and overnight. One friend has the dogs come to her. Another only goes to the owner. She charges $75.00 a day.
If you don’t need the money I know people who do ushering for different types of events. Lecture series, classical music series and an outdoor concert venue with all types of music. You get to attend for free.
My gym has several retired active women who teach fitness classes.
Thanks, @vwlizard! I’m not quite retired yet, but I am adding this great idea to my list! I’m near Boston, and it appears there are lots of options here.
This week I heard of two friends with new retirement jobs. One is working at a wine tasting room the other is driving Uber. The Uber drivers husband told her “you know we don’t need the money.” She likes meeting and talking with people. She had been working in the entertainment business as a some type of assistant but with the strike and slowdown of business since hasn’t found her next job.
It’s hard for me to think of something I’d want to do less than Uber. Something for everyone.
Agree on the rideshare driving. One of the joys of my life is having my children drive me when we are together. While it’s not my thing, I have enjoyed conversation with some of the drivers who have taken me to the airport who are of my generation and who have long term ties to Nashville.
We have a friend that loves to drive and loves to keep his car super clean. He’s been Ubering and loves it. Now he has a list of people that call him directly for airport rides.
I was just with somebody who does ushering at plays in various theaters as her part-time retirement job. She gets to see all the shows for free as she ushers (which is a big benefit)
