Path to boarding school: 11th grade girl ice hockey player

At this point in the year, I would think it would be very difficult to complete the BS admission process for the Fall of 2024 and much more difficult if seeking financial aid.

Your best chance would be looking for Fall of 2025 and re-class as a junior and set your sights for the lower ranked hockey schools like Hoosac. Regardless of what path you decide to take, Do not expect D1/D3 college hockey recruitment.

Whomever suggested Shattuck, I think one would have a better chance at winning the lottery than to walk on to Shattuck as an 11th grader without making national development camps and no prior recruitment offers from other BS.

Lastly at this point in their hockey journey 08/07 (11th graders) players, instead of BS coaches they are reaching out to college coaches.

Good advice ^^

I would look at St.Mark’s school. They have a good program and really good facilities for hockey players.

Thanks for all the suggestions - this is great! We are starting to get a list of BS to reach out to but I was also thinking applying to a low-acceptance rate one would be pointless.
Yes, at this point I’m thinking that we should target 11th grade entry into BS which will mean she needs to repeat a year. She’s OK with that. She is borderline ADHD (was evaluated by a doctor as on the spectrum). She feels she is getting a better handle on it, so if she’s in a good environment, she thinks she can perform better academically.

The app they give us to check grades is pretty horrible. It says both 2.33 and 2.73.

We have seen some of those Hockey Academies (they are popping up all over it seems), but I don’t think those will work for her. A lot are very hands-off or Zoom classes - or partner with any sort of private high school. Instead, I think the campus like environment of a boarding school which is oriented around Academics first (and Athletics is part of the holistic education) - will undoubtedly be better.

Check out Winchendon School. The women’s hockey program is impressive and they provide strong academic support.
