So how will the FAFSA form be available if the IRS website is shut down for maintenance?

@kelsmom

I don’t know
I would avoid trying to work on it while the IRS information is unavailable. If you can’t get that information, it means you have to return later to complete the questions prompted by the IRS transfer, anyway.

But if you already started it and the transfer was already done, you can log in to finish it (providing signatures, address updates, etc).

I work on teams that write software and it’s crucial to understand downstream dependencies for deployment. This is a mess.

Looks like the IRS outage runs this morning 6-noon then the FASFA opens. So - if things work - no overlap in theory

It explicitly says that it was submitted though and that it is currently being processed. There is no way to edit. Is there still a chance that a signature is missing?

Can your parent edit their form? If so, maybe their signature is missing. If neither of you can access the form to edit, it may be held up due to matches (SSN, citizenship, etc). I would just watch & wait for now. Oh, and check your spam folder, just in case.

Let us know when you do get a notification that it has processed.

FAFSA hasn’t come back up this afternoon Jan 6. When it comes back up, can we assume that the IRS maintenance, scheduled for this morning (but could take longer), has completed?

No, submitted it on the 2nd. Got the email, " We received your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA¼) form" with a date release number and everything. And then it says, “Estimated Student Aid Index (SAI) = Cannot Calculate.”
I’m wondering if anyone else got that message in their confirmation email.

In the past, cannot calculate meant that the FAFSA was rejected due to some inconsistency in the information provided. I’m guessing this might be the case for you. For example, you would get this if you are a dependent student who did not provide parent information
there are other reasons, too. I am betting that there is something within your email that will explain it. Is your email several pages long, including all of the responses on your FAFSA? Read through it carefully to see what it says. You can pm me if you want.

Thanks will pm you.

Checked on the parent end. It also says it’s been submitted. On both ends it says it’s in review. I check spam constantly and have found nothing in there and I even check trash, just in case. This is what my mom sees. It’s almost identical to what I see.

Looks like it’s processing. Hang in there & keep watching.

It’s also weird because this is the third year I’ve filled out the FAFSA and my mom has always been the one to fill out the parent portion. It already says in her portal that I am the student.

There are a lot of issues behind the scenes with the new FAFSA. For now, it seems like things are good. If you don’t hear anything after Monday, you may want to call the help line (which may or may not be helpful). Let us know when you get your confirmation.

Done! And the calculations match exactly with what’s in this guide from Dec 2022.

We forgot to put a school on it. And my kid just applied to a few more. I think we have to wait until it’s processed to add them though.

Yes, once the student can get back into the FAFSA form, they can add schools.

I have been amazed on the different FB pages at the amount of confusion and the differing “expert” opinions on filling out the FAFSA. I feel the biggest issue posted is the free lunch question - with many reporting that their counselors and state FAFSA advisors are telling parents who receive free lunch (because everyone in their district or state receives it) to check yes.
There are then just as many people yelling over the internet that it is income-based and those people should check no.
The question I have (and wouldn’t dare bring up in crazy land FB) is if a parent checks yes or no for that question, does that make any difference in the end?
Assuming tax returns are still linked, does the fact that the parent checks “yes” on the free lunch question make a difference in the overall determination?
Some are saying if you check yes then the system doesn’t ask any financial questions but those folks may have been expecting all sorts of income questions which are unneeded this year as the tax return is instantaneously linked.
