Patience, all - update on 2024-25 FAFSA

It’s possible that they need to upgrade due to system requirements, security requirements or third party vendor requirements. There’s a lot of complexity in interfacing with government systems and when compliance with security requirements comes into play. It’s a difficult year for everyone, unfortunately.

Yes, I did I like more questioning and it seems they have to upgrade their servers. I said why are you waiting until the last minute?

So much time could be saved if the FAFSA system would allow families to make corrections now rather than waiting.
Families were really banking on 1/31 as the day they could get in and fix their submission or try and figure out the problems. Now, they have to be anxious and stressed for another six weeks.

Exactly. But the issue is…they aren’t processing these FAFSA forms, and until they are processed, you can’t amend them. And they don’t want to process them with the inaccurate info they will generate.

@kelsmom do I have that right?

Yes, that’s correct. On the surface, it seems that it would be simple just to allow changes. But it is not that simple, unfortunately.

Heck, I would be thrilled if my kid could just delete hers and begin again from scratch. It is not like it took that long to fill out, but unfortunately that is also not as simple as an outsider would think, I guess.

Well there weren’t many financial questions, but when it came to the demographic questions it seemed there was a separate checkbox for every island in the Pacific Ocean.

Isn’t that the truth! The most time I spent answering the questions was thinking about where in Europe my ancestors came from. Oh, then wait a minute, my DH’s family seems to be German…

I laughed when I read this tweet. 100% good advice

Interesting terminology referring to “competence” as “resources”.

Right?! I checked “white” and then a bunch of european countries popped up. I just moved to the next question and didn’t pick anything cuz heck if I know.

I’ve been putting off this FAFSA task til the last minute because I was dreading all the issues. The whole thing was done so quickly that I kept going back to check if I’d made a mistake. Our SAI even decreased by $5K to bring it juuuust above what my kid’s current COA is (he has full tuition merit so it’s pretty low). So we won’t see any need aid but I was pleased with what the new formula did for our family at least. Might help with the next kid in line.

Where do you see your SAI? We completed the FAFSA January 13 and haven’t gotten anything.

My daughter got an email and it had the SAI noted.

when did you get the email?

Oh I should have said predicted SAI, sorry! It showed it when I submitted.

@OregonMom2024
Maybe I misunderstood your comment, but students cannot “hold multiple spots.” They can only commit to one school. (Multiple housing deposits are permitted, but can only accept / commit to one school.)

@Mwfan1921 - It looks like the following have signed on to ask colleges to extend commit deadline beyond May 1:

"A coalition of higher ed professional associations and advocacy organizations issued a letter Wednesday urging colleges to extend their typical May 1 commitment deadline for accepted students in light of a nearly two-month delay in the delivery of FAFSA information to colleges.

The nine signatory organizations—which include the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators, the American Council on Education and the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities, among others—asked colleges to grant students more time between when they receive financial aid offers and when they’re required to commit to an institution."

How much later can they go? Colleges also need time to figure out their admissions yield and potentially offer spots off their waitlists. And offer time for waitlist students to make a decision.

I agree….the May 1 deadline absolutely needs adjustment. But…still…what a friggin mess!
