Is it possible that this is a CSS school? If so, they may have determined that the family’s contribution can be far more than the SAI indicates based on the school’s evaluation of parent’s assets. I can say for certain that our SAI results in a manageable COA for us for most public schools being considered, but our initial estimates from the SAI/CSS schools is far, far different.
It’s not a CSS school. And increasing is one thing, but the picture shows a number and calls it the SAI. And that number is exactly double the SAI in the FAFSA results they got. So if their result was 8,234, the one shown is 16,468. Not 17,000 or 16,400, but exactly double.
Really odd. I never trust things that are so coincidental. I hope that the school made a mistake on its end & will fix it. But no way to know.
Evidently 330,000 FAFSAs (~5%) that were processed need to be re-processed because of the various mistakes that have come to light recently. These mistakes could result in less aid given than should be.
Another 10% have mistakes that could result in too much FA being given. Those aren’t going to be re-processed unless a school asks. ![]()
Note: College FA professionals found many of these mistakes, not FSA.
At this point, I might just start communicating solely in gifs on this thread.
My low expectations of implementing the new FAFSA have been greatly exceeded.

At this point, I wonder if we’re going to start seeing more schools push their enrollment deadlines to June 1st - I don’t expect this fiasco of FAFSA to improve, rather get worse.
Maybe…but if one of your/your student’s schools hasn’t adjusted their enrollment deadline and you need more time, contact them and ask for an extension.
@bellastella227 - My S24 is in similar situation re: not being about to Provide Signature.
However, instead of expanding his list (he had listed 13 CA public colleges originally - 12 4 year and 1 community college - when the FAFSA form was submitted 1/3/24), I’m wondering if we should cull the list down to top 3-6 to spare the college departments as we do not expect the financial aid to be appreciably different.
Thoughts from broader group re: culling list?
TBH, you would be better off contacting those schools’ financial aid departments to tell them that you are no longer interested in the school & they can stop processing your aid. I say this because if there is an unresolved issue, they are going to keep trying to contact you to fix it … and if you don’t say anything, once you fix it, they will continue to process your aid package.
In the end, though, this is all such a mess that they have to do what is easiest. Call & ask what would work best for them. It’s great that you are thinking about this!
Following up on my post above, around #863, FSA is in fact going to re-process all incorrect ISIRs. Another round of kudos to the college FA staffers who helped FSA peeps see the light.

From April 4 Fast News:
Reprocessing FAFSA Records
In response to feedback from colleges, the Department has decided that it will automatically reprocess all FAFSA records affected by the April 1 announcement, as well as other previously identified issues. We expect to begin reprocessing these records in the first half of April. Schools can choose which ISIR to use when providing financial aid offers, and we encourage schools that choose to move forward with the original ISIR to start packaging aid offers as quickly as possible.
Schools are definitely going to want to use the reprocessed ISIRs. To do otherwise is a pain, unfair to students, and it can land the school in hot water in a program review … which is why schools pushed so hard to have all FAFSAs reprocessed. That said, this means that some students who have received estimated aid offers may see an increase or a decrease in aid after reprocessing. And to add to the confusion, if I read the announcement correctly, schools are being given an option to award aid based on the original FAFSA (prior to reprocessing). If this is the case, it’s possible that a student may have two different SAIs at two different schools … and both could be considered technically correct. I sincerely hope all schools use the reprocessed SAI. (But maybe it just means that the school can award based on the unreprocessed FAFSA yet must disburse based on the reprocessed one - which might involve adjusting aid accordingly. That will certainly need clarification.)
Exactly…and this seems like quite a few FAFSAs involved…the other day they said the 330K they were going to reprocess is 5% of the total. And then said 10% had issues that could result in too much FA, so that’s another 660K give or take. So…all told, 1M affected FAFSAs.
I hope they use the new ISIRs too especially if the old one could result in too much FA…that could be an issue obviously for the following years.
Just got a note from one college that they received our FAFSA
And so it begins ….
Of course, the note said it needs corrections which cannot be made yet. Grrrrr
Updated FAFSA app stats thru March, down 40% yoy. Only 27% of seniors have filed FAFSAs.
If you know students/families who haven’t filed FAFSA, have them do so ASAP!
https://www.ncan.org/news/669477/New-Data-FAFSA-Completions-Down-40-Through-End-of-March.htm
That’s awful!!
What counts as completed? If people are being told theirs isn’t signed, is that completed?
From the NCAN article I linked:
Throughout this article, it is critical to note the distinction between FAFSA submissions and completions. FAFSA submissions include those applications with errors that will need to be corrected by students and/or contributors to be processed. FAFSA completions are all those applications without errors that have been processed. As FSA notes, “Completed applications, therefore, are a subset of all submitted applications.”
So, completed apps will increase once students can make corrections.
Also from the article:
FAFSA submissions through March 29 show a 27% decline. About 35% of the class of 2024 has submitted a FAFSA through date compared to 49% last year
I completed the FAFSA and it was processed but none of the schools my DD actually applied to is n it and I can’t add any ![]()
Soon!
I wonder if the entire website will go down once they allow people to do corrections if everyone floods the website trying to add signatures, or make edits. Perhaps they’re considering doing a “staggered” release like they did when they first released the FAFSA?
