Patience, all - update on 2024-25 FAFSA

I can hear the back room discussion now: “We at College Board have a lovely product that the government can purchase that will solve all of your problems.”

CB has a poor track record for customer service and solving problems. This adds fuel to that fire.

This year was awful. It looks like next year isn’t going to be much better.

Exactly! We are supposed to sign up for a payment plan by Aug 1, but just heard that we won’t have an estimate until next week now. We are 3 1/2 weeks out from school starting. This is so ridiculous. Thankful my kid isn’t a freshman, don’t know what we would have done!

Now it seems like some of our fears about the difficulties the FAFSA rollout might impact the ability of the kids that most benefit from government-based aid (though in this case from a State) to be able to afford college at all.

Yes, students whose parents do not have U.S. SSNs have really had a rough time this year. Unfortunately, it will impact them beyond this year if the money they missed out won’t be available to them in the future, either. I imagine that some schools may have grant programs aimed at helping these students, but many will not. The botched FAFSA rollout is unconscionable.

The new 2025-26 FAFSA is being quietly rolled out to a select group of students (no clue how they were selected). Federal Student Aid is now focused on the future. Unfortunately, as recently as last week, additional issues with processing for the 2024-25 FAFSA were revealed, and there are students whose FAFSAs are still not processed.
