Patience, all - update on 2024-25 FAFSA

I figured out why I had to submit so much financial information. My 2022 taxes are weird because I am retired and don’t have income from work. Normal folks won’t have all the questions I had that were essentially trying to figure out what my income was from.

Good news!! If you had untaxed income from a retirement account, it looks like you’ll be asked if you had a rollover & how much! As long as you don’t ignore the question, of course.

If the parent already has an account (submitted a prior year) and just logs into the account there’s nothing that prevents the parent from submitting - or at least thinking they’re submitting - the parent component.

Yeah, I contacted them at they said it is a known issue for Washington state (where I am from)

It might be because colleges might give additonal internal finanical aid if this is the case.

I just did ours. It went pretty smooth after kicking me out twice. It says submitted so hopefully we did it correctly.

Some colleges might choose to take additional students in college into consideration when awarding institutional aid. However, it should be noted that colleges are allowed to consider other students in college as a professional judgment situation. If the college makes a PJ adjustment for the amount of money paid to another school for another child, it might affect federal aid (depending on individual circumstances). If you have more than one child in college, definitely reach out to the school to find out how to request a PJ review for additional students in college.

I filed a tax return and indicated as such. I did my part before my mom did hers.

@ae1231 @kelsmom
I got the same error - frozen at the address and mobile phone # without the possibility of advancing, but I’m in California. @Ae1231 whom did you contact so I can let them know as well?

same here in California. on hold now

That is what I tried to do at first, not realizing that I needed to go through S24’s link on my account. The system stopped me right away since I wasn’t going through a link.
This is my third year but first with S24.

@mfryan76 @ae1231 I was able to advance by keeping mailing address blank, but filled in mobile phone # to advance. Let’s see if I can populate the address afterwards.

Edited to add: At the confirm page, it still freezes trying to correct and add the mailing address.

As I noted above, I was not able to add mailing address at the confirmation page without it freezing again.

Without mailing address, I was able to create an FSA account while they confirm name, SSN and date of birth with SSA. Not sure if the missing mailing address will create further issues down the line, but wanted to keep @mfryan76 @ae1231 and all on the thread updated.

thanks - I already had and FSA set up but it still won’t let me move past it. Only thing is I never received a final verification from FSA back in December when I set it up that it was verified, maybe that is it? Hoping someone eventually answers on hold lol…

…You’re braver than I thought!

My S24 didn’t either and it worked out fine today.
But now trying to do S22 and I can’t log into my account. Freezing up when I want to click on new form.

I filled out and submitted 2 FAFSAs for D24 & S24 on 1/1/24. I had previously set up FSAs so that may have been helpful. It was a bit confusing of who logged in where/ signed what , but the info on this thread is correct - each student & 1 parent (if married filing jointly, at least) has a separate account, and each has to sign and submit. I did not have to fill out any financial info, as I was giving permission for the FASFSA to use my 2022 tax forms. There were 2 scholarship questions that someone upthread mentioned, that I put 0 for. I was surprised at how quick and simple it was, compared to CSS, and it did not take long nor did it glitch for me.

That is really good to hear! I imagine that once the launch is well underway, most people are going to appreciate the ease of the new form.

This is my first use of the online FAFSA, and it seemed pretty easy - Much better than when I had to fill it out by hand in the mid-1990s!!! Hopefully the bugs get worked out and everyone can easily complete it.

I got it done today for twins. My oldest. Process was fine, but the number is a train wreck. My sisters have multiple kids in school right now and the new rules say they no longer take multiple college kids into account–so their EFC effectively doubled. You’d think the schools would just keep charging them the same amount; what’s the difference to them? But they CAN’T. The feds have a rule against “overpayment,” which is defined as aid beyond expected family contribution. Any such aid reduces the aid package accordingly. So basically right now it’s looking like their college bill is going through the roof. The colleges have told them not to worry, they will figure it out. But it’s enough of a hit that they will either have to pull some kids or transfer them someplace more affordable–which they would need to take care of starting RIGHT NOW.

Hoping someone can explain why that’s all wrong. But it’s what colleges are telling us.

I just used the chat on their website, but it does work again.
