Paying or Saving?

That is fascinating! I actually receive a fellowship from OU supporting study abroad. This scholarship (of sorts) would require taking four language classes and then studying at a university in that language, so I was thinking French for McGuill University. Maybe I should consider taking German! I have actually been working with drones (at an internship) so that experience sounds so cool! What does your daughter plan to do upon graduation?

She plans to attend grad school at OU (she’s national merit so she has a 5 year scholarship that can be used toward grad school) ideally she’d like to develop educational software to help secondary students visualize complex scientific principles. She’s found a phd student that is looking for ways to incorporate more meteorology and physics into high school curriculum and hopes to work with him while she’s in grad school. She’d also like to design software for meteorologists. This seems to be a wide open field, most meteorologists don’t have the comp sci back ground needed to develop software and most comp sci folks don’t have the background in meteorology.

One of the great things about meteorology is that you can go in so many different directions and take so many diverse career paths!

Haha, I can sense your excitement already!! So it’s between OU and SUNY Albany? Good luck!

You are wise. Those loans can really be a burden once you are out of college.

And yet, can anyone explain why it was 80degrees here yesterday and snowing today?

@3scoutsmom oh my, it sounds like she has had a great experience! I loved OU but coming from New England I am not sure if I can logistically commit to a school that far from home! Its hard to imagine living halfway across the country, and having to take three planes (two layovers) to get to OU. I guess it may be a sacrifice worth taking. That is so cool that she is a National Merit Finalist! Congrats to her!!! Is she double-majoring in comp sci?

@HiToWaMom it certainly seems that way, unless Cornell reveals some big FA package turnaround (haha no). I come from a small high school so I would know no one at either of these schools, which can be a plus and a minus. I guess only time will tell!

And @twoinanddone that’s weather for you! Have fun in that blizzard, wish I was there! Should have applied to more schools in that general vicinity! (I was accepted to UIUC and UMich but they’re too expensive, should have looked further west!)

To anyone wondering—I have decided upon OU! You can’t beat the cost as they threw more scholarships at me. They have also invited me to several programs that are very exciting! Thank you for helping me make this easy decision, which didn’t seem too easy at the time.

Congratulations!!!

Congratulations on your decision! You sound genuinely happy. I wish you the best!

Congratulations!
What new programs were you invited to? (Might be of interest for others looking into OU)
