Pedestrian bridge collapses at Florida International University

Interesting about the change in design. Ack, I hate changes. Sometimes it takes us longer to change a design than to do it the first time! And it’s easy to make a mistake.

On a different scale, I just got back a set of shop drawings for precast concrete that I submitted to an architect on January 30. That is a LONG time for architects to review my drawings. I knew there would be problems with the job, because some of his strings of dimensions didn’t add up to overall dimensions! My drawings are blanketed in red, and it’s not because I did a bad job. I’m realizing that (some) architects aren’t doing an adequate job during the initial design process, so they use the shop drawing review phase to get everything up to speed. The problem is that fabricators then have to spend lots of time (money) revising their drawings. SO frustrating. I will advise my client, the fabricator, to ask for extra money, but I’ll be surprised if they give him anything.
