Peer's Parents strategically quit high-paying job to get their child financial aid in college?

[QUOTE=""]
father was west branch manager of an international investment firm and made high 6 figure salary, mother unemployed. Then early junior year, the kid's father "loses" his job and decides to become unemployed.

??? did he really lose his job or did he quit? Maybe he was down-sized and since he doesn’t have a degree, he can’t find a similar job. Maybe he’s decided to retire or start a business.

Later learn that it is a strategy they use to get financial aid for their kid- all the money they spend goes into food, vacations, and the stock market. I'm not sure what criteria is used to judge financial aid, but the kid's parents didn't go to college

I find it hard to believe that the dad had a high position w/o ever having gone to college. Maybe he went to college in another country.

Sounds like they have a lot of assets…those will keep them from getting a lot of FA. They have “income” …income from the stock market. They have assets.

Again, I think you have an overly-active imagination.

For fafsa purposes, if the family has no income at all, and decides to apply for means tested benefits, and qualifies, they could be eligible for the simplified needs test.

Also, with $0 income…wouldn’t they qualify format auto $0 EFC?

But then…all that would get them is $5770 in Pell money.

This story is full of Swiss cheese holes. My guess is the OP isn’t privy to the whole story…nor should they be.

MYOB.

I’m glad you think that, but you clearly aren’t me and dont know this kid and their family. Like I said before, both kid’s parents didn’t go to college. If you dont want to believe it and just blame it on my supposed “over-active imagination” go ahead.

Yeah, i guess I should mind my own business. But then again, a bit of hypocrisy shows in that, there you are answering my post…soo I guess you’re curious too

I’m not jealous for a couple reasons: if I wanted to have expensive meals every week, vacations, and the dream “wall street lifestyle” like that kid does, then I would be jealous. Don’t forget that I used to be friendly with this kid, and the egotism and arrogance was the reason that ended…

@mom2collegekids Im glad you have some response and insight into this but dont go making accusations that this is what I’m planning to do. And if you’ve never heard of the offspring of wealthy parents going to these big prestigious institutions as a result of donations then you are also uneducated.

Wow.

I don’t even know what to say.

With OP’s inappropriate language, his credibility is long gone.

Closing thread as nothing productive can come of it
