Pelotons and similar for home workouts

I’ve had a Peloton bike since 2017 and like the cycling content as well as the strength, mobility, yoga, barre, and outdoor walking content. If you have a bike already, you could try using the Peloton app with it.

My bike’s build quality has been good. I have swapped out the seat and added a device that allows the screen to pivot so I can do non cycling classes (I don’t have a TV in the workout area, and the bike screen is bigger than my iPad). The speaker quality isn’t fab, but I mostly use earbuds anyway, or I can pair a Bluetooth speaker with the bike.

There’s enough variety in instructors and programming to meet my needs, and riding “with” real life friends across the country or with Peloton members I “know” through social media helps when my intrinsic motivation flags. So much more convenient and less expensive than going to a gym. DD prefers real life classes and DH prefers hiking in nature, but I have been more consistent with Peloton than any other exercise routine.

One of my friends/clients is a very avid cyclist. He had a fall and broke his collarbone (and maybe other things) and used an indoor trainer. He suggested getting a Garmin Tacx 2 and then either Zwift or Rouvy software to run via Apple TV. This involves taking the rear while off my bike and connecting it to the Garmin. He said it is totally immersive and kept him riding. Even though he is now back on his bike (and he cycles to work every day), he still uses it to work on cycling in the mountains and when he is done, it feels like he has cycled in the mountains.

Any experience with the Garmin or other indoor trainers?

No personal experience, but a good friend recommended Wahoo Kickr.

I’m pretty sure both my son and his wife both have Zwift and Wahoo trainers.

Instead of an indoor trainer I went with a Life Fitness IC7 indoor exercise bike. I don’t go “all out” when I’m riding indoors, and I typically just read while I’m cycling.

I had been talking with my friends at ChatGPT and it looks like I can get a Schwinn IC4/Bowflex C6 (same machine), a SmartSpin 2K V3, an Apple TV 4K (already have this), a big screen TV (already have) and Zwift or Rouvy software. I can get the bikefor $900 new but used for between $300 and $600. The SmartSpin is about $250 and automatically adjusts the resistance to match the ride on Zwift or Rouvy. It should work but could be a little glitchy. Lots of things have to work together.

But, I think I found a better solution. There is a sale on a Wahoo Kickr2 combined with a Zwift Ride. All integrated and integrated with Zwift software. $999 for the whole shebang. And can easily be adjusted for use by me and ShawWife. It probably means living in the Zwift universe but if it gives us a fun way to do winter exercise and get me back in shape after my surgery, so be it. This may be what your DS and DIL have @1214mom.

I did walk 2.5 miles yesterday and did my twice a day PT workouts. This morning did one PT workout and 20 mins on the stationary bike while ShawWife was working with our trainer. What no one told me is how tired I would be for parts of the day. Just dead tired. Other parts of the day I am just fine. I am getting on mission critical client calls but leaving the rest to my team.
