*Penn Class of 2020 Early Decision Discussion*

Hey guys, I just read some essays from a few years back of people who got into penn, and then I read the essays I submitted. I’m kind of worried that my writing style is kind of formal and clear-cut instead of sounding like a story. I know what there’s nothing to be done now, but is that bad?

The Penn supplement essay is not supposed to be a story. The prompt does not warrant a story

Happy Thanksgiving everybody! Relax and enjoy the time before the storm!

Common App was about an EC and how I grew as a leader through it…could have been more interesting but it’s a very unique EC so I think it was solid. Penn Supp was much better imo, drew upon a lot of things (origin of interest, internship that incubated my interest, very specific parts of a Wharton education, connected it back to a broader idea at the end). I think it was pretty okay as far as essays go.

Been reading this a while. Thought I’d hop in. I wrote my common app essay on my passion for photography and how it pushed me to act on injustices in my community.

Just a little background on me. Hope you guys can give me your opinions on my chances, etc. I go to a decently competitive private hs. 3.9 UW GPA/4.6 W GPA. 2280 SAT. 760 on two SAT Subj. Tests (though i’ve heard Penn does not really care about subject tests anymore which was why they made them optional this year). I started a nonprofit organization that has donated 10,000 blankets to the homeless (collected used blankets from hotels, blanket manufactuerers, etc.) in 7 states and 3 countries. Got multiple awards/media recognition for this. For the nonprofit, I partnered with Penn Microfinance to open a microfinance program in the bay area. I am the Photo Editor for my newspaper. Captain for my debate team. Placed in top 10 at multiple debate tournaments. Won first place at CA DECA state tournament if that matters lol. Also I have been working under a Wharton Professor for the last two years on a weekly basis via Skype during the school year and during the summers when I go there on various research projects. He wrote me a rec, but not sure how valuable that is.

Just a little break down on me. Would love your guys’ opinions. Also yea I applied ED to Wharton.

asuccessonsuccess I think that sounds very impressive and that you will have a great shot at Wharton.

To be honest, everyone has a great chance @ uPenn. It will all depend on how the admission evaluation member(s) get impressed with each applicant’s package (Scores; GPA; ECs; Essay; Recommendations; Interview & a few other interesting areas).

IMHO, it depends if your package complements each other and tells a great story (to unfold @ uPenn). This complementing is the key.

These days everyone has a business (quite cheap & easy to start one); volunteering, etc.

If anyone has a hook, that pushes them over the edge. Most don’t. So, each and everyone (who are above a certain benchmark) has a equal opportunity until Dec 11th.

So, hang on; relax and chill out! Wishing everyone happy holidays & Great luck!

Not sure if this has been posted or not, but t-15 days till decisions are released!

Do you guys think National Merit SF will do anything for me?

@VaishS Probably not, there are just so many. And yeah, I’m also one.

@successonsuccess you sound smack like Hersh Solanki, a current Wharton student. Should be a good sign

@tjgirl123 omg did you intern at Walter Reed??? I know lots of TJ kids because I did NIH this summer

@teenagecrime hahaha no i dont go to TJ but i have heard its a good school :). And yes I did work at walter reed! Came down from new york

@VaishS - Your state might do something for you - depending on how many are applying to UPenn (since Penn likes to boast that they have applicants from all states - diversity).

If there are not too many applicants from your state, that is definitely a help since the east coast schools are loaded and almost every good student applies to these schools as compared to the midwest, where most like to stay in the midwest.

Does everyone applying to Wharton have business related EC? Bc I have absolutely none

@tjgirl123 oh awk I assumed that you went to tj since Walter reed and your name

I went down to bethesda from NYC metro area so ayyy

@c777123 I’m also very into philosophy. Mine was about a fear of death. I’d say it was really good. My Penn supplement was not a story, but it was pretty specific.

Honestly, I’m kind of banking on legacy. It sounds so pretentious, but I have lower scores and fewer ec’s than most. Essays and legacy and decent grades.

Will Penn look down upon my application because of my lower scores. In march I got a 740 CR, 760 Math, 730 Wr. But this time I got a 690 CR, 800 Math, 670 Wr. My super score went up to a 2270 and I think Penn super scores but will a composite score going down hurt my chances to SEAS?
