🐾 Penn State 🐾 Early Action Class of 2030 Official Thread

Agriculture is an entire college with a dozen majors that go from Infectious Diseases to Engineering to Agribusiness to Animal Science so you can’t generalize.
Education requires evidence you have experience with children or young people.
DUS is less selective than when it was used by Smeal applicants but it’s still relatively selective since it allows you to pivot to anything.
Perhaps Outdoors Recreation in HHD (if your HS background matches their pre-reqs), CED in Ag (if you had 3-4 years of science) or Organizational Leadership in CLA (if you had 3 years of Foreign Language and DECA)???
The easiest major to get into depends on each students’s background and grades; it is the one that matches your skills&background best. You need to comb through every major from every college and figure that out. If you’re waiting for a decision, that’s time well-spent.

This is great information. I believe we registered for a virtual informational meeting this spring about LEAP. In the meantime, I am curious about housing for the summer….are the students housed in the freshman dorms and do they move again, with a different roommate in August?

Also…..this is a different topic but we are a 7-8 hour drive away. We live in the metro west Boston suburbs. How do students/families manage traveling back and forth. There doesn’t seem to be a local airport that flies direct to Boston/Providence…..Philly is a few hours away, no trains. I am hoping there are carpooling groups. When deciding on PSU, this was really the only con for us…..the location. Does anyone have any insight into this?

You can fly into State College airport. There’s no direct flight so you’d go through Philadelphia (typically).
There’s also a Megabus that goes to State college but you probably want to go with your student for the first year.
If you are OOS and get a random orientation date you can always switch that to the weekend before LEAP or the weekend before school starts in August. There’s a part of the process that’s online.

LEAP students live with their ā€œPrideā€ in the LEAP dorms. They take classes together and live together, making things easier socially.
Then in August they move to their actual dorm /Living Learning Community, not sure on the date especially for students already on campus.

This is so helpful. Thanks. On our tour they mentioned that some of the dorms still aren’t air conditioned so hopefully the LEAP dorms are.

Freshman aren’t allowed cars. Do you know if the LEAP kids can have a car for the summer?

Are they releasing decisions over the weekend?

In the past, summer LEAP students were allowed to have a car.

Some LEAP students were able to stay in their rooms for fall, others had to move, but for the most part, they were allowed to move boxes into their new room so they didn’t have to take them home.

Summer students usually live in the air conditioned dorms.

I would not expect decisions over the weekend. I think they will start again Monday evening/Tuesday am into their portal.

A very frustrating process at PSU. Daughter applied August 1st and we’ve watched decisions come out for the last month with nothing on her end. Her high school classmates started hearing toward the end of the week and still nothing in her portal moving. 10 days until 12/24 so she’ll hear soon, but the random release is just hard to understand.

applied DUS and have not heard yet. :crossed_fingers:t2:

Honestly, I don’t think it’s random, although it can feel that way. From others, my understanding is that the ā€œobvious insā€ and ā€œobvious notsā€ heard first and that they have worked form the two ends toward the middle.

If so, that makes sense. She is one of those kids who would be into a less competitive major but nursing is nursing and she’s sitting in a pile with a lot of similar good students for very few spots. So we wait…

the alternative of holding every application until Dec. 24th and releasing them all at once would cause systems to crash. While it feels painful to trickle them out, there is still time before the promise date. (but a decision can also be ā€˜defer’ which is another level of frustrating).

Good luck with nursing. It is one of the most competitive majors to get into, and many end up in Altoona. hope it works out!

How much weight does the Schreyer Honors College interview carry? My son just had his last week and said it went very well. The interviewer told him she was going to write him a recommendation to the SHC committee?

The biggest weight for Schreyer is the essays. Grades, rigor, recommendations and interview are also included, but the essays hold the most weight. You will see kids with perfect gpas not get admitted. If the interview went well I’m sure it can be beneficial, but again the essays that allow the kids personalities, passions, and goals to shine through end up being the most weighted. I hope your son or daughter gets in. It’s a great honors college. If for some reason they are not admitted as freshman there is a pathway in as sophomores.

Thanks. I guess I’m just used to Pitt (where she applied early and heard early as they are a true rolling admissions school). PSU just has a different admissions system, and that’s fine. Just being impatient here, but with a Pitt acceptance for nursing in her pocket, she’s in a really good position either way.

I applied August 1st and haven’t heard anything back yet either!!! for reference, I’m out of state and I applied for criminology.

Hi we are also from the Boston suburbs. I currently have a daughter who is a Freshman. The New England Alumni Chapters coordinate charter buses for PSU students that provide transportation between University Park and New England for Thanksgiving, Winter and Spring breaks. They have a charter bus from main campus to Newton, MA. It’s about an 8hr drive since they stop for lunch and the Charter bus is great. Here’s the link for more details Bus - CT Valley ChapterPenn State Alumni Association

For Thanksgiving break they had 4 charter buses that left from Newton, MA. Flying in to State College airport is super expensive and is not direct. Also it’s known for flight cancellations :frowning: The Charter bus is definitely a much better option to/from New England. Happy to answer any other questions you might have. Good Luck!

Sound like she had a great option no matter what happens at PSU! Congrats to her for that admittance!

have you heard of any nursing admits? They may be holding them all and release them all in a batch. I know about 6 or 7 years ago (may have been the first year of common app), nursing admissions was overwhelmed and all nursing applications were deferred for a month. Super frustrating, but since it is such a small cohort, they wanted to get numbers right (both number of admits as well as stats of kids applying). I don’t recall they’ve had the same issue since then, so I think they understand their process better. Not expecting to be the bearer of bad news, but wanted to share a historical context.

Good luck.
