Penn State Early Action for Fall 2024 Admissions

It depends on what he intends to do. Taking Math 111 (Business Calculus 2) would be what he’d likely take after a good score on the calculus AB exam (unlike Math140-141, which are weedout and for which AB->141 is really hard, AB segues into 111 directly). The class is not offered over the summer because it’s not mandatory but it’s a good class to have for students who took Calc AB in HS and want a calc class on their college transcript. Wrt math, he would also need SCM200, a business related stats class.
He could take Econ 102 or 104 over the summer - they’re offered as part of LEAP (it’s usually easier to get an A or B when taking the class as part of a small cohort rather as part of a huge, anonymous, 300-student class, especially since you have class every day and only one other class to handle so if you keep up with that one class and do your best asking questions in the smaller group, you can’t get overwhelmed. Finally, experience with one helps with doing well in the other.)
For the record:

Be careful with claiming all AP credit since the student doesn’t want to reach (59?) Credits too early. Only claim what will be most useful (various strategies exist.)

Quick question, since you are the PSU expert. My daughter called and asked to change from Communications to Undecided, after getting the 2/2 at Altoona. She said they told her they switched her over and she is eligible to go to UP. We have not gotten any correspondence except from Altoona. I have not been on her portal and do not want to look like I don’t believe her, but my question is, would it be that easy to just call and request the change to get in?

Ask your daughter whether her portal has changed and if so, what it says. Has she received anything by snail mail?

Agree. No other year was an issue. My daughter was accepted last year and I used this board and niw watching for a family member. Hate to see someone come in this year with little to no historical knowledge mess that up for everyone.

If Econ 102 (micro) is offered during the summer, I highly recommend taking it then. This is an ETM class (entrance to major) and is notoriously difficult … due to content and large class size during the regular school year. Summer will offer the benefit of a smaller class size as well as a more relaxed environment.

If this is what he is doing, be prepared to sign up for LEAP the day registration opens. Econ 102 will fill up quickly.

Econ 104 (macro) isn’t as valuable, because while it is a graduation requirement, it is not an ETM requirement.

Good luck and congrats.

I’d have her check her portal to see what it says. It should say what campus and program she is being considered for. You can’t just call and change campuses. She would need to be reconsidered and have her application re-evaluated for the new major.

Has anyone who received acceptance on December 21 via portal got the package in the mail yet? I think it may have been delayed due to the holidays but wanted to check

Nope we are still waiting for the snail mail

S23 was a BArch applicant and was declined BArch and given the Landscape Arch option. It all came in the admittance letter on the same timeline as the other Barch notifications… which was certainly later than the letters for many of the other programs but it seems like they’re behind a little this year.

Accepted on Dec 21 in portal and still waiting on mail package. Just checked USPS Informed Delivery (if you create an account you can see exactly what mail you are getting later that day) and it is not coming today either.

My son was accepted for summer start 2024 (UP, DUS, TO). He sent email for reconsideration for fall start and they will consider and recommended picking a major. Any advice on majors that may be less competitive and give him a chance for fall start?

What is he interested in?
What is the highest level of math&foreign language he will have reached by HS graduation?

He was already denied fall in DUS, so he’d have to choose a major less competitive than that. Some of the colleges that may have some less competitive majors than DUS right now include the College of Ag, College of IST, College of Health and Human Development, College of Education, and College of Liberal Arts. Not all majors in those colleges are less competitive, but some may be.

The way the review works is they first look to see if they can offer admission for fall. If not, THEN they look to see if they can offer admission to summer. In this case, the answer for your son was yes. But for a reconsideration to work for fall, he needs to substantially change his application - which would mean choosing a different major. I’d ask him where his general interests lie and then choose something near that. Once he’s a student, it’s MUCH easier to change into DUS.
I would steer clear of anything in Smeal, Engineering, or Eberly College of Science as those will not be less competitive than DUS right now.

Thank you!! Yes, the admissions counselor we are working with told him to send an email back with a major he would like to be reconsidered for the fall. If reconsideration is not an option, he’ll receive original decision of summer at UP for DUS. I thought about asking her bc she has been so helpful, but thought that might be pushing it a bit. He has shown some interest in kinesiology and possibly education. But this is a kiddo with an IEP, poor test taker so TO, and 3.8 gpa-he has a lot of other great things on his application and essays were good but he knows he was lucky to get DUS summer start at UP.

What is he considering for a major?

Honestly, if he was accepted for DUS for summer, I would encourage him to go. Penn State has been doing this for years and has a strong track record with recommending kids for summer. It really gives them a leg up.

And this may be unpopular - but college is going to get hard. Every year, there will be parents in the Facebook page with kids struggling in math, or a science, or something else and are scrambling looking for help mid-semester. Help your kid not be one of those. And the best way is to start summer - as Penn State has admitted him.

Whoops - just saw your reply. If he is thinking Kines, he can ask for that for reconsideration. But based on your comments, I would take the summer start and smile. There are many kids who got 2+2 who would now happily take summer. All a matter of perspective.

Kinesiology will be as competitive as or more competitive than DUS.
Science/education would be less competitive.
Recreation Management would also be less competitive.

However level of math reached by HS graduation (and level in FL if considering one of the CLA majors) will matter.
For any science major he must have bio, chem, physics, and preferably another one.

2+2 may be a good option since it’d make the transition easier and it’d be less costly than UP.

It will be a huge struggle financially for our family. And he will lose 6-7 weeks of full time work this summer he was hoping for to help with fall tuition. We can fill out 2023 fafsa if it doesn’t work out and see what happens. If we can find a way to financially do it, we will, believe me! We are very proud of him and he deserves this opportunity for sure!!

So my daughter decided to request redetermination under Alt major- the auto response came from Altoona, even tho we sent to reg admissions email.
Is this typical? Does anyone know how long it takes to receive a true reply, not the automated ? And do all emails get answered? Even if the redetermination cannot be given? Thank you!

Thanks again for the recommendations. I will pass it on to my son.
