@Nrdsb4-haha that might be the image they portray, but their main cause is socializing and partying. It would be unwise to think otherwise.
@sciencenerd, do not assume that my statement that most sororities and fraternities do charitable work in any way implies that that is the reason people join these organizations. I neither said it nor meant to imply it.
When I said “most of them have a pet project that they devote most of their time and energy into,” I meant that most of the time they spend on charitable work is usually devoted to a single pet project.
I did not mean that they spend most of their time and energy on charity work.
^^ And that is meant to offset and detract from the unseemly side. Kinda like when Exxon creates a corporate social responsibility department.
UCF frat suspended after mom says pledge forced to chug ‘huge bottle’ of alcohol
It is Beta Theta Pi again!!!

Back in the 70s, for about a year my boyfriend was the president of a fraternity at MIT. I do not recall them doing ANY charitable fundraising. I was there a LOT, believe me, and I never had any hint that there was hazing going on. I never even thought about it.
As I said, if my son’s fraternity did any fundraising, he never mentioned it to me. I would assume that if there was some all-Greek effort, they participated in it. During his pledge term, he had to wear a tie every day for a while, and if anyone asked him why say “I am a gentleman of XY.” There was one day during which pledges had to wear a silly costume all day. Like maybe dress up as a bunny rabbit. The worst thing I heard of was that the pledges were taken to a McDonalds and “had” to eat everything on the dollar menu. Not being naive, I’m sure there was something I wasn’t told about specifically during the actual pledge event/weekend, he intimated as much.
On the other hand, he also told me about the real hazing at some of the other houses. His response to my questions about what they did: “We LIKE our pledges, we don’t want to hurt them.”
I strongly doubt that he would have pledged any house at any other school.
ETA: S’s house was at the time probably at least 30% POC. We are not talking Alabama here.
Has the latest Cornell hazing incident been brought up?

“…The rules were simple: Would-be brothers allegedly earned points for having sex with overweight women. If there was a tie at the end, the victory went to whoever had slept with the heaviest woman. New members were told not to inform the women about the contest, according to a university report…”
edited to add these nuggets:
"…In September, fraternity Psi Upsilon shut down its Cornell chapter after an alleged assault that authorities said was being investigated as a possible hate crime.
The same month, a fraternity member was accused of chanting “build the wall” near the Latino Living Center.

How is Jake Corman trying to prevent another Tim Piazza hazing tragedy?

“The draft bill focuses on dealing with hazing in the criminal code — having different levels depending on what type of hazing it is, Corman, R-Benner Township, said. There would be misdemeanor offenses, but instances where hazing leads to death or “significant bodily harm” would be felonies.”

@bester1 , since you posted this young man’s demise as a fraternity death, simply on the basis of his having belonged to one, despite the fact that his death occurred in his dorm, rather than in a fraternity house, I thought you might have followed up on the cause of death: accidental overdose.
http://www.centredaily.com/news/local/community/state-college/article199482494.html
Have you found any evidence that his death had anything to do with his fraternity membership? Have unaffiliated Penn State students overdosed in the last year? Just wondering.
@Consolation …I have not other than the intial report connected it to a PSU Fraternity member. Good point.
