When you hear a negative rumor about somebody, at what point do you go into shunning mode? I think there’s a big difference between what people hear, what they believe, and what they “know.”

I took that to mean coaches in other programs, which could explain why he didn’t get any job offers.

That story pretty much sums up what I’ve been thinking, but the missing Second Mile documents is a new twist. Did Sandusky take them himself? Maybe the counsel made sure they disappeared?

Bloomberg has a well written article today on how/ why “the powers that be” could overlook what was going on at Penn State. Its called the “Halo Effect”

The Halo Effect: Lessons from Penn State
Winning sports programs boost a college’s visibility, but scandals can be costly.

A loosely supervised operation becomes increasingly central to the mission of a storied institution. Its star performer receives millions in compensation. The risks are not well understood—and primarily off the books. Cross out American International Group (AIG) and write in Penn State, and you’ve got pretty much the same script, right?

Sandusky was a finalist for the Maryland job in 1997 but it went to Ron Vanderlinden. (Ironically, Vanderlinden is now the Penn State linebackers coach and co-defensive cooredinator.) Sandusky was apparently miffed at the way the search was handled:

An overview of the victims and other kids and relatives coming forward:
[Penn State Scandal: Mother of Sandusky’s Adopted Son Speaks Out - Yahoo!](http://gma.yahoo.com/penn-state-scandal-mother-sanduskys-adopted-son-speaks-091457912.html)
Not that we should assume these reports to be god’s truth, but I do find eerie parallels between the foster son’s story and that of the boy at the school where S was a volunteer wrestling coach.
Attention from a famous PSU football coach, gifts galore, initial excitement from the kid (maybe even the mom), kid being picked up by S from school during the day, then kids shows fear and is acting out, and S “to the rescue”/delivering kid into his hands…

Seems that the victims are lining up… And a few defenders…
Will this go to court, is the big question.

The NYT article noted that some of the victims declined to cooperate but were subpoenaed by the grand jury and required to testify.

The big money drain from PSU has started.

They knew he liked to shower with littlenboys and hug them whileneveryone was naked. If that doesn’t set off that this guy has a serious problem, it’s because people chose to ignore it.

Naked horseplay, bringing little boys around all the time, accusations, and this world was small.

Wow, according to a new report there are victims coming from as far back as the late 1970s, which means these crimes had been going on for 30 years.

[Exclusive: Jerry Sandusky interview prompts long-ago victims to contact lawyer | PennLive.com](http://www.pennlive.com/midstate/index.ssf/2011/11/exclusive_jerry_sandusky_inter.html)

Definitely that interview was the worst idea ever.

“in a nutshell, if an investigation is not truly independent, then it is better not to conduct it at all.”
from Reed Smith in [Ten Steps to a Better Internal Investigation](http://www.reedsmith.com/library/search_library.cfm?FaArea1=CustomWidgets.content_view_1&cit_id=23945)

Amazingly, the Sandusky-Costas interview was Sandusky’s lawyer’s idea. What was he thinking???

Maybe bias everyone so he can get a change of venue, further away from where people who knew the victims live? Some attorneys make choices that make you really wonder–a LOT!

Maybe the better lawyers in town refused to take Sandusky’s case.

I doubt that a change of venue would help Sandusky. Locally, some people might have a favorable view of a Penn State football coach. Nationally, not so much-- and what’s with a guy who can barely bring himself to say he’s not attracted to little boys? In what venue will that play well?

How would a change in venue help with NATIONALLY BROADCASTED interview???

Hunt, we have already been through a debate on whether lawyers can/should/do refuse to take cases on this thread…

Or there is a big group of liars wanting some fame and a paycheck…

The people make allegations will need to undergo a significant amount of scrutiny; many others may be unwilling to do so which may be why only these few have surfaced to date. The legal system is NOT a cakewalk or “easy money,” especially for assult and sexual violence victims. They often feel they are victimized by the system as well as the assault and having to relive it, reopening wounds.

Hops_scout: considering the pain and humiliation these accusers will be going through, and taking into account the miserable excuses for human beings that have covered up these crimes all these years, I tend to believe them.
