Penn State Sandusky scandal

<<several said="" they="" were="" astonished="" that="" more="" wasn’t="" done="" to="" manage="" the="" looming="" crisis="" during="" grand="" jury="" investigation.="">></several>

This is what I have never been able to understand.

The presidents “box” is really a huge room. Buffet tables, bar . . . hundreds of people easily. I have no idea whether or not Sandusky was invited, but it is not inconceivable that he felt entitled to stop by uninvited, just as he obviously felt entitled to so many other things.

Until I hear otherwise I believe all Spanier knew and all the board knew was that Sandusky was being investigated for something sexual with a kid in the shower. My assumption was that since it was already being investigated that they would wait and see what happens. With his status as a fund raiser for his boys club I assume they were worried about litgation of falsely accusing someone.

When the grand jury report came out in full horrible detail which no one was expecting it took each and every person at PSU by shock. Then introduce a rabid media blitz. PSU then was falling over itself trying to do something, anything…

The thing is Spanier was one who was ultimately responsible for making sure the “horseplay” or behavior of a sexual nature that was reported to him directly by Shultz was investigated back in 2002.

But, I don’t really want to re-hash this thread. It’s all been said before.

"all the board knew was that Sandusky was being investigated for something sexual with a kid in the shower. "

“ALL” they knew? Yes, it was just an accusation and could have been false and they knew it was being investigated… BUT could they not have done some internal work to verify or disprove the charges, and to make sure that S was not potentially having the opportunity for further abusive activities?
Is the University supposed to lie back and wait? Did they cooperate? Did they initiate more investigational work to help the GJ/DA? Did they act as an institution with all the powers that the institution is conferred? This would appear to be the MORAL route, and it would take some courage to face the matter from day one and each step of the way, and to be concerned about any potential past or future victims. It would also take courage to break rank from the culture, and to publicize right away their concerns and activities related to the accusations. Honorable stance of an institution under fire is to be: Upfront. Open. Transparent. Hopeful for a vindication of the charges. Willing to examine the role the institution may have played up to that point, and for the institution to play from that point on.

Members of the Catholic are just so so sick of having to defend, explain, tolerate, duck, apologize for the child abuse by some priests. Some have left the Church for the WAY it was handled, for the looking away, the lack or moral behavior within the institution.

It was being investigated BY THE POLICE. This is their job. They were doing it. They are trained to do it. It is their FULL time occupation.

Who on the university staff do you think could do a better job of investigating child abuse allegations than the police who were already doing it. It makes NO sense.

“It was being investigated BY THE POLICE.”

Then where is the 2002 police report? It was not investigated by police in 2002 when Shultz brought this to Spanier.

Ohiomom. We are discussing why more wasnt done during the grand jury investigation which began after the 2009 incident.

“Ohiomom. We are discussing why more wasnt done during the grand jury investigation which began after the 2009 incident.”

sax, Read a few of your recent posts to see what is being discussed: Spanier and what and when he knew. In 2002 information of a sexual nature was reported to him regarding Sandusky. This topic was resurrected from the post reporting speculation Sandusky was in the President’s box a week prior to his arrest. In 2002 Spanier should have made sure there was a proper investigation and he did not.

In his first interview since being fired, Joe Paterno said he did not know to handle McQueary’s allegations:

The article is at:
[Joe Paterno’s first interview since the Penn State-Sandusky scandal - The Washington Post](http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/colleges/joe-paternos-first-interview-since-the-penn-state-sandusky-scandal/2012/01/13/gIQA08e4yP_story.html?hpid=z1)

And Paterno also said he was afraid that any action on his part would be perceived as some sort of favoritism or persecution (depending on how the charges panned out) towards Sandusky, and thought it best to refer their concerns to someone with more broad responsibility, further from the athletics department. You know, he was worried that people would jump to conclusions and make false accusations simply because he was involved.

<<you know,="" he="" was="" worried="" that="" people="" would="" jump="" to="" conclusions="" and="" make="" false="" accusations="" simply="" because="" involved.="">></you>

Oh - I am sure that would NEVER happen! ;)

"One oft-asked question by observers of the scandal and the media is what Paterno’s reaction would have been if it had been one his five children allegedly abused.

“It’s sickening,” he told the Post. “Violence is not the way to handle it. But for me, I’d get a bunch of guys and say let’s go punch somebody in the nose.”

Sue Paterno told the Post she wouldn’t stop there: “If someone touched my child, there wouldn’t be a trial, I would have killed them."

So, according to this guy, Joe Paterno has not been fired…

^ That is correct. This would be obvious from the resolution the trustees voted on after he was relieved of his duties a head football coach. Incidentially, Tim Curley, the AD who is being charged with a criminal offense has not been fired. He was placed on a temporary leave of absence. With pay.

Not impressed with Rodney Erikson. I thought he might be good but he is just not handling this well at all. Personally, I think he is lying when he says he didn’t have a clue until the day the arrests were made. Not only were their whispers in SC for years, back on March 31 and April 1 this story was broken in the Harrisburg paper - The Patriot Ledger. Now, I can imagine he would not read the PL on regularly (cough), but SOMEONE at PSU surely read it!!! For him to be clueless makes him an ostrich.

Since not many of you seemed to have read the information I was referring to, here is a link to what I was talking about.

Board was briefed last May:
[Penn State president says trustees were briefed months before Jerry Sandusky arrest - BostonHerald.com](http://bostonherald.com/news/national/northeast/view/20120112penn_state_president_says_trustees_were_briefed_months_before_jerry_sandusky_arrest)

And here is the article about Sandusky being given tickets by Curley to sit in the AD’s box ONE WEEK before he was arrested. [Jerry Sandusky sat in president’s box at Beaver Stadium for Joe Paterno’s 409th victory, sources say | PennLive.com](Jerry Sandusky sat in president's box at Beaver Stadium for Joe Paterno's 409th victory, sources say - pennlive.com)

So here’s what I don’t understand. Penn State failed on multiple levels during this entire thing, including, but not limited to, this past Football season when a man whom was under GRAND JURY investigation for multiple counts of child molestation was given access to the Athletic Director’s Suite and later the Nittany Lion Club.

Penn State is under investigation by multiple agencies and stands to lose not only donations and endowments from private individuals but also Federal Grants at the US Department of Education looks into the behavior of the past and current administration at the school, including the current board of directors.

Why would someone consider sending a child there to study ~anything~ given the lack of trust many must feel for the administration to handle anything correctly, and the loss of funds to the institution that will surely follow something like this?

Seeing Paterno on the news yesterday…I know he is undergoing chemo, but he looks terrible. I can’t believe he was still coaching. He is a couple of years past his sell-by date.

I think the fact that Curley gave Sandusky tickets to the game while the grand jury was investigating is the perfect illustration of all that is wrong and has been wrong at Penn State. Even in the face of an actual investigation geared toward truth finding about something that had been whispered about for years; something that two employees had witnessed…even then, every one was still pretending the emperor had new clothes.
The alumni that spoke out about his anger at the hiring of the new coach is another example of the fact that they still don’t get it. It is so much like the Catholic Church scandal.

My D almost went to PSU. I am so grateful that she didn’t. If she had, I would not want her to withdraw over this but I am very grateful that she decided on another college.

My daughter is at Penn State, and i must say that I am not sorry that she is there.
