People Get Mad over URMS, Legacies... What about Athletes?

Can I adopt you :)

My two cents…

Athletes are just one of many “exceptions” granted liberties in the college admissions process. And it truthfully makes me cringe to see the 2 football players from my school who got into Harvard (who are not even attending) get in over some brilliant kids who were rejected.

But in all fairness, the issue becomes one of supply & demand. Every college has niches that need to be filled, and whether that is a trombone player or a football player, so be it.

We hear no complaints about the world class musician who gets into Harvard w/ lower stats – athletes are no different. Maybe we regard music as “academic,” but the principal remains the same: many of those musicians have lower GPA’s & SAT’s than those rejected.

Everyone talks about how it is so important to show passion in an EC not just be “well rounded.” Perhaps athletes are the rule and not the exception.

Any thoughts?
