If you are flying in, there are branches of the main Italian cheese steak makers at the airport.

The Rodin Museum may be closed for renovation, but the Phila. Art Museum is nice. The Barnes Foundation is another museum - impressionistic art. The Franklin Institute is more of a hands on science museum for kids.

Bad weather makes walking in Old City and visiting the sites miserable…though perhaps a tad better then tailgating in the bad weather then watching a football game. ;)

lancaster? Ahhh, NO…The OP and archiesmom are aware of possible lousy weather,so why drive all the way to Lancaster on a miserable day…same goes for visitng Longwood Gardens?.

Also, Please don’t get a cheesesteak at the airport, evenif it is a branch of the famous places…sheez, you are IN Philly, go to the famous spot, Pats or Genos…i can’t imagine saying i had a Pat’s or Geno’s famous cheesteak BUT had it at the airport.it is an EXPERIENCE,go to the real, place

And remeber when ordering a cheesesteak, It’s meat, then cheese, then toppings. If you want a beefsteak with American cheese, onions and mushrooms it’s: “American wit and mushrooms.”
or if you want cheesteak with cheese whiz and onions, it’s simply wiz wit

Heres the links to the museums and the reading market. All good things to do on cold windy days.

and heres a link to Philly fun. looks like there is a great jazz concert at Temple. Check it out. OOPS thats tonight…check out the other stuff though

Daughter lives in Philly, frequent visitor (going next Wed night to see Anthony Bourdain at Merriam theater)

Great way to get around Philly is on the trolley called the Phlash. All day on an off costs $5.00. Notice the stops- you can get to Art Museum, there is a Rodin Museum Stop -(very small, and note the Barnes Museum under construction near the Rodin Museum on Ben Franklin Parkway)
Reading Terminal - DaNic’s always has lines, but there’s a reason. You can find all Philly foods there under one roof. Might be crowded, but that’s part of the experience

In addition to all the traditional historic sites, there is the National Jewish Museum- uber modern.

Comcast building is quite the tourist stop (a phlash stop, too) Huge ongoing High Definition movie constantly showing in lobby, and downstairs, nice food court.

** I have written the names of the tourist places in the list below from memory- I hope they are correct **

** notrichenough** your daughter says 4th Street Deli best french toast—
My daughter would say Sabrina’s- has your daughter been there ?
Those 4 Street Deli cookies are in Reading Terminal —SO good !!!
Their sandwiches at 4th Street are amazing. (do you know there is another location on 20th I think)

Archiemom- are you touring the campus with a prospective student, or is your child already a student at Penn? If you are going to visit the campus as a prospective student, I urge you not to go this weekend with such a miserable forecast! We were there visiting our son last weekend, our last football game as he is graduating, and with the glorious weather the students were out and about on campus, and it was so exciting to bet there - it makes such a difference.

It is called sightseeing and saying you had one at the locale…if you only cared about having one at the airport, you could have bought a frozen one from Tony Luke at the grocery store…sheez…it IS an experience, would have been better if Joey Vento were still alive, a true character of Philadelphia, though maybe you could watch him on a video clip atthe airport terminal. ;)

If you like Museums, you must check out the Philadelphia Museum of Art! You could spend an entire weekend in there. The Franklin Institute is good too. The Barnes Museum is currently closed, as it is moving and will reopen in 2012.

I believe Tony Luke’s has been declared the best cheesesteak in Philly.

The Constitution Center is also great. I wish the weather were better for you, because Philly is a walkable city. You can walk between all of these locations in nice weather, but I would probably not do the Art Museum walk in the snow or cold rain. Tons of great restaurants on Rittenhouse Square and Ave of the Arts (lower Broad St).

My daughter lives and works in Philly. I recommend a trip to the ICA, on the Penn campus as it is free and worth a quick visit, very strong current exhibition. The new Barnes is under constuction and not open for visitors yet.

Union Trust Steakhouse is one of my favorites, has ,imho, THE best raw bar in the City…for a great small dish tasting menu, you can try Matyson…Davios is also very good, and Del Frisco’s is always good…Davios,Del Friscos and Union Trust are all in very unique buildings, settings…if the weather was better Waterworks would be a good choice,it has great views of Boathouse Row and the Schuykill River…their grilled calamari is to die for

Booklady, i have been meaning to try Osteria, and just checked their menu, and it is now on my list to get to in the next month…thanks for reminding me…

My favorite cheesesteak place is Jim’s Steaks, at 4th and South Street.
I think I am the only one in the world that doesn’t care for the Reading Terminal market…

If you have little kids with you, visit the Please Touch museum.

When we were driving from Boston to Virginia this summer for college tours, she made me detour into Philly for lunch so she could get the French toast at the 4th Street Deli.

Looks like you’ll be having a cheesesteak while in Philly! Our friend who is from Philly would agree with Leftylou and go to Jim’s for the cheesesteak sandwich.

However, I agree that the Reading Terminal is a fun place to stop if you have the time and are nearby.

I’ll be in Boston this weekend…not looking forward to snow or rain, yucch.
