Cider vinegar in a little dessert dish. No cover. Takes a few days. You might have to add a little each day or just empty and start over.
One time during a long term hotel stay, my daughter had a huge fruit fly issue (I wasn’t there, but she said they were gathering in groups that looked like big fuzzy black patches.) The hotel did the apple cider in a short jar trick and it worked (but took a few days).
She has occasionally had the issue in her current apartment (but never at an infestation level like at that hotel). She has tried those apple shaped traps, but using apple cider works better.
I think the soap/vinegar combo will make it unpalatable to you cat. Good luck and report back. Hopefully CT fruit flies fall for the same trick as RI fruit flies. ![]()
I have used the vinegar/soap combo in a small glass jar (like an olive jar) with holes poked in the lid, and that has worked well.
I also have purchased these – https://www.amazon.com/Gardeners-Supply-Company-Soapstone-Fruit/dp/B007XIXDA6 – which work very well, but are a bit more expensive than my DIY version. ![]()
Just read about this trick to avoid fruit flies.
A flame thrower is an option.
