Pharmacy: Pitt v Bing v URI

If you have a loan free option, don’t take out loans.

Loans are bad.

They strangle kids and/or their families for years.

Your kid will thank you for it later - even if it’s a small loan.

You’ll also find that, for many, college costs more than they say. There’s trips or greek life or late night pizza, Ubers, and more.

If you need loans, it’s not affordable - especially when you have lower cost options.

There are countless stories of highly paid people paying them back into their 40s and 50s and saying it was a HUUUUUGE mistake.

I would say taking out the Direct Loans during the undergrad portion of her studies is reasonable.

$5500 freshman year
$6500 sophomore year

I don’t have too much to offer except my daughter’s roommate and best friend at Pitt is a second year PharmD student, if you wanted me to help connect you with any specific questions about the program.

My spouse is a pharmacist. Best advice is to avoid debt. A lot of grads are coming out of pharmacy school with massive loans, and current pay levels don’t support that as much as in the past. Your student will have more freedom to choose her favorite area of practice as a pharmacist if she’s not overburdened by loans that require her to choose a high paying job over a pleasant or rewarding one.
