Wondering if anybody has used Playtime? I signed up and occasionally look a the listings but never attend. The local events usually say levels “2.0 to 5.0”, but I assume there will be too many higher level players for me. It’s free, but I’m thinking about unsubscribe to reduce email clutter.
The No button is used by us for people who have replied Yes, but now want to change it to no. That is the action that moves the person on top of wait list to the Yes group. It happens automatically!
Everyone still playing PB in the heat?
We had 14 people at our group session on Friday. That might be the most ever. We started a little before 8 (putting nets up) because we were worried some people who are normally working would be competing for the courts. We had 3 nets.
Most ppl showed up between 8 and 8:30 or so, and many didn’t leave until after 11. I played hard almost the entire time, and my shoulder, which always hurts a little, is still reminding me I shouldn’t play that hard for that long.
We had 3 people leave our group because they moved to different states. We have found 2 new people to play with us, which is great - we are pretty picky. Our group has been together about 3 years now, and 2 who left were with us pretty much all of that time.
Thanks for the fun updates. Glad to hear you’ve been playing a lot.
We are gearing up for a month long road trip to visit family/friends on east coast. Last week I only played PB once, wanna rest up a sore hip before all the sitting in the car. I am on big text group for a lovely group of retired ladies who play at the courts nearest me, and they have been getting out a lot of days at 7am. I’m kindof sad to be missing so much of the summer play this year. I am packing my paddle for the trip, since there may be opportunity to play at one of the stops.
I’m sorry you’re missing your group, but hope you do get to play along the way during your trip.
Sometimes we have random people show up when we are playing, and we are usually happy to let them play with us for a few games.
Just figured I’d bump this up since it’s been a couple of weeks.
This summer it’s been kind of stressful making sure we have at least 4 people to play every M/W/F. 3 of our very regular people moved, and even though we still have about 12 in our group, with vacations, illness, grandkid duty, etc., people are busy. So far we’ve made it, but Monday we had only 4 the entire time. It was 3 people I really like playing with, but I always stress a little, figuring someone may not show up.
Hopefully @Colorado_mom is getting to play a little on her vacation.
I almost got to play with a College Confidential pal this week while on vacation. Unfortunately had some family scheduling reasons that caused me to cancel.
Noticed my Oct high school reunion will include a PB event. Too bad vacation plans mean I can’t attend because the courts are right down the street from my parents (and I used same courts a bit decades ago, when they were tennis courts).
Our long road trip got extended, which means I had SIX weeks without any PB. Was a bit concerned about skill loss. So I decided to sign up for a local indoor PB-102 class ($18). Normally there would be 4 people, but only 2 signed up. So after some drills, instructor tapped another employee to make a 4-some.
The good news is that my play seems not to have regressed much. LOL - the bad news is it was not all that great before I left. Next step is to get readjusted to outdoor play in strong summer sunshine.
Today I had the opportunity to play at 8am (one player was 93 year young!) and later at 6pm (run by a nice gal I met at class the other day). Definitely will stretch tonight.
I missed a ball, and when my partner went for it his feet went out from under him… fell on his back. I felt bad. Noticed he was wearing Hoka sneakers. Not sure if that contributed to him slipping or not…. but methinks it’s best to avoid running shoes on the court.
Has anybody tried quiet balls? Our city has a few locations where they require Gamma Librarian quiet balls. Our local organization has provided them (in lockbox for members). I don’t play those courts and have not tried them. I’m told the bounce is different but not too bad once used to it.
I think I’ve played with some version of soft balls, and I don’t like them as much as the normal balls. We use Franklin balls, with the number 40 but I can’t remember exact name.
I have been on vacation, and today will be the first time in 2 weeks that I’ve played.
For lurkers thinking about leaning pickleball, autumn can be a nice cool time to try a local class.
Or check out indoor places - our facility (a private place) holds a free Pickleball 101 session, equipment provided. And non-members can do classes and reservatios there, just at a higher guest rate.
I am not really a pickleball player. I play tennis most days, sometimes twice a day. My 87 year old mom plays pickleball three days a week and I have played twice with her. I am in NYC with my grown (30,33) sons to watch the US Open. We were in Central Park and saw the pickleball courts so we decided to play. The view from the courts is gorgeous. We had a lot of fun.
Last week I started questioning my new PB hobby. I saw one opponent step on the ball, limp off the court (she did play later). And the next day I saw a serious fall - onto all fours (hurt a knee) and then hit forehead (luckily we had a nurse in our group as well as a EMT trained employee at indoor place… for caution we insisted she let the married player split uo and driver her and car home).
Today I was more hopeful. Both gals were out on the court, the 2nd one with some bruising but no more pain. AND the organizer mentioned that she 81 years old - wow! She’s somebody who played tennis in her 20s, really good player. I do try to stretch etc to minimize risks. So for now PB is still my go-to for keeping me off the couch. (Plus some running now and then too. But that is not as social and fun.)
As I’ve posted here, I have a group of roughly 12 people who play regularly, 3X a week. Some of us have been playing for 3.5ish years. About 2 weeks ago we had our first broken bone/serious injury. A woman was out all summer. VERY FIRST day back, she fell forward and hurt her wrist. Eventually had it x-rayed, and she had surgery last week. If I had to guess I’d say she’s late 60s.
I leave for a cycling trip on Wednesday, and I debated about not playing leading up to my trip, but I played as late as today.
I’m going to say the goodness of getting off the couch and playing is more positive for me than the risk of injury is negative. I think the opposite may be true of skiing.
In other pickleball news, we’ve all noticed how much better we are these days. We have some really great rallies and “paddle battles.” When we do that we’re impressed with ourselves, no matter which side gets the point. I admit that leading up to my trip I haven’t been playing quite as aggressively or whatever as I normally do (will let lobs go over my head, for example, instead of making Herculean effort to get them).
Uh oh. Since my prior post 35 minutes ago I purchased my Ikon season ski pass (first time ever for annual pass… last year I did a 4pack and 1 day Epic). I guess one good thing about this is that when I do ski, I won’t feel pressured to pack in a long ski day. That’s good for my safety and also good for my husband who does not ski. Also nice is that this Ikon pass works at Eldora, only an hour from home - hoping I’ll find that some of my PB pals might want to ski in winter.
If I lived where you live, I’d probably be skiing. But I don’t live where I can ski on any regular basis (and east coast skiing simply isn’t as good as Colorado/Utah/Lake Tahoe, etc.).
I grew up in NY and concur that skiing isn’t as good there as Colorado ![]()
Since this is a PB thread, I’ll also point out how nice it is to be able to play outdoors all winter in Colorado. It’s only on selected days, and you can’t plan very far ahead. So mostly I plan for indoor play. But it’s a joy to get a day when the sun is shining warmly and the courts are dry. (One hardy local group tries to play year round every Tues under the lights 6pm-8pm, if not snow covered. I prefer to cherry pick nice weather opportunities.)
Mornings are getting cool, so I’ve had to retrain on dressing in layers (especially when there is a chance I’ll be sitting on the sidelines). At around 42 degrees yesterday 8:30am it was quite cool in the shade. Not sure what the temp was when we left 2 hours later in lovely sunshine, but I had shed: headband, thin gloves, windbreaker, athletic hoodie (started with hood up), windpants (which were over capri leggings).
Observation: It can be hard to remember which pockets have which stuff.
