I have no desire to get any body mods. But I don’t think they are any stranger then getting botox, liposuction, plastic surgery, or even dyeing one’s hair or wearing Spanx. All of these things, whether temporary or permanent, are done to satisfy our personal standards of beauty. People have always done these things.

My tattoo is a mother/daughter tattoo. We went together. As I mentioned, my first but her third I think (she has 7 now). I have a mermaid, she has water. We both got fish hooks as well.
I seriously don’t understand why people want to do something permanent with their bodies. For me it’s like wearing the same outfit every day for the rest of your life. I don’t mind the look of either tattoos or multiple earrings, but I draw a line at piercing your face. Oh, and people with large holes in their earlobes. These things freak me out on a visceral level.
I read the thread title and also thought for a split second that someone here had over 50 piercings.
LOL. I should have titled it “over age 50”. But it’s interesting to see who was curious about more than 50 piercings!
I don’t see piercings as permanent so have no qualms about getting them.
It’s taking me a long time to figure out a tattoo I won’t get tired of though. Something small on an ankle or foot shouldn’t be too much of a commitment.
@Psychmomma, I got my ears pierced for my 14th birthday. A friend’s mom was a nurse and my mom said Mrs. C could do them. She used a wine cork and a 10-gauge hypodermic needle. Guess my mom figured if I wanted to go through that to get my ears pierced, I was indeed serious!
@yucca10 Because life is short and skin is superficial ?. I actually wrote a blog post about how lupus inspired me to finally get a tattoo. This disease is permanently marking my skin through scars, stretch marks, etc so why not mark it in a way that I have control over?
@romanigypsyeyes I can certainly understand this, but most people have very different reasons for getting a tattoo. Anyway, maybe most people are just more constant in their tastes than I am
My best friend gave me a bunch of lobe piercings in high school. She wasn’t trained, just used a needle and lots of alcohol. Not the smarter idea, but I never had any issues.
However, I had my cartilage done a few times at Claire’s because they would never heal. Finally, I got them done at a tattoo parlor & they came out great. I had my industrial at one point, but I lost the bar on vacation, so it “shrunk” around my regular earrings.
I had my bellybutton done at 12 or 13 in a boardwalk parlor. It was a little crooked. I got a bottom piercing before college, but it rejected.
??♀️ Got my nose pierced earlier this year. I already had ears pierced as an infant, second set middle school. I never wear earrings in my second holes but the holes haven’t closed.
I have a tattoo parlor in mind as I don’t have a lot of faith in Claire’s for a cartilage piercing. Thanks for the info @newjerseygirl98.
So I went ahead and got two helix piercings a couple weeks ago. They hurt like heck but the pain subsided quickly. I used a different place than for the third lobes. I really liked this woman- very professional but also very warm and friendly and she obviously loves what she does. So far so good. No way I could survive these in my left ear, which I sleep on. Both are on the right. I think they look fun when my hair is tucked back. Lol. I can see how this becomes addictive.
I’ve always been cautious and take my time when making decisions. Since you just got your first piercings, why not just live with those for awhile. At a later date, if you feel strongly about more, then you won’t have been rushed, in a hurry and made a “in the moment” decision. We are all different of course, but that’s how I approach body altering.
I got a small tattoo at 50. My daughter had gotten a tattoo that represented our relationship when I was going through a tough time (chemo, surgery, all that fun stuff). She didn’t reveal it until she’d had it for a while. I was incredibly touched. Later, when she was going through a tough time I got the same simple tattoo in the same place. I think we both like having matching ink.
