I love my pillow top mattress. Always look forward to returning from vacation and sinking into it. So comfy. Having said that, we probably won’t buy another one. After 6 years, it has definitely developed hills and valleys. I’ve never noticed that it gets hot unless I add extra blankets.

Next mattress will probably be something along the lines of a tempurpedic. My best friend bought a latex one to help with her horrible hot flashes. She said it didn’t seem to make a big difference.

We have one of the Trump pillow top mattresses and it is amazing. It does tend to get warm when two people are sleeping in it-- we wear shorts to bed year round with a ceiling fan on and we are comfortable. It feels like a normal bed temperature wise with only one person sleeping in it. We are always so happy to come home to this bed after vacations.

update – D said S can have her Tempurpedic foam mattress thing when he goes to college! So I don’t have to buy a new one, which is great, and she says it’s really comfortable.

And now I have lots of good info if and when we ditch our old mattress. Thanks everyone for posting.

did you mean your daughter will give your son her mattress to use at your home when SHE goes to college?

Are you sending a mattress with your son to college…for the dorm? If that is what you are considering, you will need to contact the college directly to see if they even allow this. Some absolutely do NOT. Plus, the mattress ON the dorm bed would need to be stored someplace, and many schools will not permit these to leave the dorm room.

Of course, this is school dependent…and if your kiddo is living in an off campus apartment that is unfurnished, likely does not apply at all. But for ON campus housing…check with the school first.

no – D is already going into her 3rd year of college. Her mattress topper is now at home on her bed lying on top of her mattress. She said S can have it when HE goes to college. The tempurpedic thing lies on top of the dorm mattress. Yes, I will check it out to make sure the college allows it. It’s not instead of a dorm mattress.

Class of…your OP indicates you are buying a mattress…guess that is to replace what your son currently has at home? No relation to college?

Yes, most schools allow mattress toppers on their mattresses.

thumper: read it again. It clearly states:

I’ve had foam with a pillow top and loved it but now sleep on straight memory foam because of a nasty back injury. Now all memory foam is hot since manufacturers have tweaked and perfected their materials over the years. It is not recommended to use a feather bed topper on memory foam, even though it’s super-cushy!
Grad student D just bought a great 10" memory foam mattres- top rated- from Wayfair.com. I spent two nights on it and she got a terrific buy at under $300 and free delivery (within 2 days too!). We’ve bought a lot of things from them as I’ve been remodeling this house- everything from outside light fixtures to sinks- and in addition to the great prices, their customer service is excellent!

“or getting a new mattress without the pillow top aspect”

That is what threw me!

Love our pillow too and never felt not!
